HARING STUDIO NEWS May 2013

Exhibition Update Julia Gruen

• The exhibitions opened to great fanfare and record-breaking attendance at the Musee d’Art Moderne and Le Centquatre in Paris. Between opening day and May 13 (just under a month) the museum has had over 56K visitors, more than for any of their other exhibitions (since the museum reopened in 2007). In addition, the catalogue has already been reprinted (8000 additional copies), as well as posters and postcards. Despite this success, after much debate and close review of a flurry of proposals for Far East venues, the current plan is to close the show after it ends in Paris (August 18). A somewhat smaller version would be reassembled for the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco to open in Autumn 2014, after which it might go on to Museum in Los Angeles. Dieter and I met with Roger Barnett, trustee of the DeYoung museum. Barnett is a major Haring enthusiast and will work closely with Richard Benefield, the De Young’s deputy director (who came to Paris to see the shows) to raise funds to bring the Paris show to SF. Dieter and I are still working on possible additional venues in Europe and Brazil for earlier in 2014, but as few museums have the space required, schedules are already full and extension of private loans uncertain, closing it after Paris would give us the breathing room to confirm the best loans for SF and beyond. Dieter and I also sat down again with Barbara to discuss touring options, and she supports the idea of closing after Paris and restarting in Fall 2014 with SF.

• The NYHS will include Haring materials in a show about the early years (1980-85) of the AIDS epidemic, opening June 2013. The NYPL will mount a show in Fall 2013 covering the latter years of the epidemic, and we will loan work to them as well.

• We continue our meetings with the Fales Library at NYU about a show of early video and related archival materials scheduled for November 2013 – February 2014.

• Following our agreement to participate in a 2014 group show about at Middlebury College in Vermont, I am in very preliminary discussions the university about a possible solo exhibition of early works (a la Brooklyn) to tour a select group of New England university galleries, originating at Middlebury and continuing on to 2 or 3 additional venues.

• We have been approached by the Loyola University Museum of Art regarding the possibility of a Keith Haring exhibition in 2016. The museum focuses on the spiritual in art.

• We have been approached by an exhibition space in Geneva, Switzerland about a show geared toward children, possibly in collaboration with the Musee en Herbe (a children’s museum in Paris). Musee en Herbe presented a very successful Haring show for kids in 2011-12.

• We successfully shut down the exhibition of fake works in Miami. However, we now need to decide whether to proceed with litigating the organizers and the owners of the works. This matter will be discussed at our meeting.

1 Miscellaneous

• The Foundation was honored with the Judith Peabody Humanitarian Award at GMHC’s annual “Savor” benefit, held this year on March 21. We shared this honor with Joy A. Tomchin, producer of the Oscar-nominated documentary, “How to Survive a Plague”.

• The Necker hospital benefit auction took place at Sotheby’s Paris on April 17. All works sold, many far above estimate (as was hoped) and raised approximately $500,000 for the preservation and conservation of the Haring . With the addition of the $400K already raised privately by the hospital, the full budget for the project is now in place.

• PPNYC honored the Foundation with a luncheon at the Pierre Hotel on Friday, May 3.

• I joined GMHC senior management and NY AIDS Walk sponsors on the podium for the NYSE Opening Bell Ceremony on May 15.

• The NY AIDS Walk will take place on Sunday, May 19. The Foundation’s “Grand Sponsor” contribution has been acknowledged with our logo appearing on banners around town and in all printed materials. The Haring Thanksgiving Day parade balloon will once again be anchored at the Walk’s entrance at 59th & 5th Avenue.

• “Restless”, the short documentary about Keith’s time in Brazil is complete and is being screened regularly in Paris at Le 104. completed her 52-minute web-only documentary, “Keith Haring: The Message”, which is also being screened at Le 104. The goal is for her web-only film to be developed over time into another full-length biographical documentary for TV/DVD and theatrical release.

• The conservation team for the preservation of the mural has been confirmed, and will be led by Antonio Rava, one of the team responsible for the successful cleaning and restoration of the Pisa mural.

• Work on the plaza in front on the Haring mural in Pisa is continuing. A rededication and naming ceremony is tentatively scheduled for the end of May.

• The conservation plan for the mural in Philadelphia is still being fine-tuned. We are collaborating closely with Philadelphia’s Mural Arts organization and have provided them with photo documentation to assist with the process. The goal is for the work to be done over the next months with a re-dedication ceremony planned towards August/September.

• Annelise and I worked intensively on the new Haring iPad app developed by Bridget Goodbody at Art Intelligence. The app was made available as a free download via iTunes on Keith’s birthday (May 4) in English and French. It is now available for download via iTunes for $5.99

• In April, I spoke about the Foundation to a class at the NYU School of Continuing Education, “Sources of Support - the rise of artist's foundations and changing role of corporate and private support for arts

2 organizations and programming.” Other speakers were from the Whitney Museum and the Joan Mitchell Foundation.

• Fawn and I met with the New Museum’s new Keith Haring Director and Curator of Education, Johanna Burton. We also visited GMHC; observed a class at the East Harlem location of one of our grantees, “Casita Maria”; met with ABC personnel and with a potential adviser on AIDS-HIV funding strategy. I also met with Creative Time regarding possible future funding opportunities. At the request of Whitney curator Dana Miller, I will be meeting with the archivist for the Dash Snow archive.

• Prior to the Paris opening, I did an extensive interview for Telerama, France; another with Swedish NPR; and recently with Connaissance des Arts, Paris; While in Paris, I participated in the press conferences and gave many interviews to French print, radio and TV media.

• I have been invited by the Rauschenberg Foundation to attend a reception at the White House on June 5. The RRF recently donated a work to the White House’s collection and will be thanked during an event celebrating American art and honoring the White House Historical Society, hosted by Michelle Obama.

Registrar Update – From Julie Joseph

•I continued to work closely with the French up to and including the installation in Paris. I condition reported all the works and oversaw the installation in both venues.

•The installation of the 10 Commandments went very smoothly - the new strip lining and Velcro application on the canvases proved to be a very efficient method of stretching. The conservator will return at the close of the show to retouch areas if necessary, though I don’t expect to have many issues.

•The conservator was also able to patch some significant holes in the Heaven and Hell canvas before it was hung, which was a great improvement for the piece. The takedown of the exhibition will be in August, and I am already starting to organize the schedule.

•The Valley prints that have been on display at the Bronx Museum since July of last year will be returned when the show closes in July 2013. The Ignorance=Fear (Act Up) poster that was lent to the Rohsska Museum in Goteborg, Sweden in December will return in early June.

•The Ignorance=Fear ACT-UP poster will be included in an exhibition at the law firm Clifford Chance US LLP in New York, which is mounting a show on the conception, design

5 and use of the Silence-Death slogan. It will run from May 31-September 18th of this year. Additionally, the will borrow the Silence=Death print for their exhibition about AIDS activism (working title “How We Fight”) which will open in the Fall of 2013.

• I continue to collaborate with Pace Prints and the Gladstone Gallery to keep track of inventory and sold works, replenish print inventory as needed, and reconcile all files and the database.

•I am still working with the staff at Collective Access to finalize the design of the new database. We hope to have the Collections module up and running soon.

• The organization and streamlining of the exhibition files continues. The organization and safe storage of artwork at the warehouse is also ongoing, as well as the flattening and rehousing of the rolled works on paper.

Authentications and Collections Research Amy Murphy

Individuals, galleries, and auction houses continue to check in to see if their work(s) have been issued a certificate in the past or are located in our database. The word that we are no longer authenticating seems to have circulated wide and far. However, we are frequently asked who now has the authority to authenticate. We generally refer people to IFAR, http://www.ifar.org/authentication.php

However, after an extensive online search, we discovered that Art Experts Inc. and the “Keith Haring Registry” are offering services to authenticate works purportedly by Keith Haring. This is troubling, but likely inevitable. http://www.artexpertswebsite.com/pages/artists/haring.php http://www.keithharingregistry.com/FAQ.aspx

Collections Research: A variety of research questions come in on a daily basis - from recommended restoration processes to queries about the meaning or context for a particular or sculpture, etc.

Database Preparation for Authentication Files: The older pre-digital authentication applications are being organized in preparation of scanning for inclusion in the database.

Print Research Project: All electronic print information has been put into folders and transferred to an external hard drive, which was given to Whirl-i-gig for input into the database. Once the information is in the database, we will review the fields and usability of the information for adjustments and modifications with the aim being to be able to input all future information ourselves.

Keith Haring’s Donations to Organizations: Attached is a spreadsheet charting the various organizations that Keith supported during his lifetime (our records span1983-1990). The categories of involvement include general merchandise donations (posters, pins, stickers, etc.), donation of physical artwork, logo creation, and appearances (interviews, panels, workshops, etc.).
