SAMO© IS REALLY DEAD1: How the Commercialization of American Street Art Marks the End of a Subcultural Movement Sharing a canvas with an entire city of vandals, a young man dressed in a knit cap and windbreaker balances atop a subway handrail, claiming the small blank space on the ceiling for himself. Arms outstretched, he scrawls his name in loops of black spray paint, leaving behind his distinct tag that reads, “FlipOne.”2 Taking hold in the mid ‘70s, graffiti in New York City ran rampant; young artists like FlipOne tagged every inch of the city’s subway system, turning the cars into scratchpads and the platforms into galleries.3 In broad daylight, aerosolcanyeilding graffiti artists thoroughly painted the Lower East Side, igniting what would become a massive American subculture movement known as street art. Led by the nation’s most economically depressed communities, the movement flourished in the early ‘80s, becoming an outlet of expression for the underprivileged youth of America. Under state law, uncommissioned street art in the United States is an act of vandalism and thereby, a criminal offense.4 As a result of the form’s illegal status, it became an artistic manifestation of rebellion, granting street art an even greater power on account of its uncensored, defiant nature. Demonized for its association with gang violence, poverty, and crime, local governments began cracking down on inner city street art, ultimately waging war upon the movement itself. As American cities worked to reclaim their streets and rid them of graffiti, the movement eventually came to a standstill, giving way to cleaner, more prosperous inner city communities. -

LOST Theme Keith Haring 1958–1990 ART Transient Berlin Wall Mural 1986 ———— Paint on wall, 91.44 metres ———— Berlin Wall Between 1949 and 1961 approximately 3.5 million people, or twenty per cent of the population, escaped from East Germany to the West. Most slipped through the border controls in Berlin, then a divided city controlled by four occupying powers (America, Britain, France and Russia). Concerned at the rising numbers of defectors and the effects on the economy and the image of the communist regime, the East German government erected in 1961 first a barbed wire fence and then a concrete wall with watch towers and anti-vehicle trenches. Called by the East German authorities the ‘Anti-Fascist Protection Rampart’ (with the implication that West Germany had not been fully de-Nazified), and described occasionally by the West Berlin city government as the ‘Wall of Shame’ (because of its prevention of movement, and consequent separation, of friends and families), the Berlin Wall became a potent symbol of the Iron Curtain separating East and West Europe. Some East Germans continued to try to escape over the wall but generally failed: between one and two hundred people were killed in the attempt, or used the wall as a place to commit suicide, from 1961 to 1989. Checkpoint Charlie – or, officially, Checkpoint C – was one of the more visible controlled border crossings between East and West Berlin. Featured in a number of classic spy films and books, it became something of a tourist attraction for visitors to West Berlin. As the years passed, artists and graffitists painted on the western side of the wall, notwithstanding the dangers of antagonising the East German soldiers guarding it (the wall stood a couple of metres inside the East German border). -

No, a typewriter. No, a toaster. No, a piece of pie.” These words were exclaimed by a visitor to Claes Oldenburg's 1961 East Village storefront, trying to figure out what product she had just been examining.2 As the viewer encountered a series of handmade objects representing mass-produced goods, she found herself in a storefront oddly mimicking a retail space, creating an ambiguous space where common distinctions between “art” and “commerce” had seemingly collapsed. -

It celebrates humanity instead of manipulating it. - Keith Haring Keith Haring was born on May 4, 1958, in Reading, Pennsylvania. As a small child, he spent countless hours drawing and was fascinated by the visual dynamics of cartoonists Charles M. Schultz and Walt Disney. In 1978, Haring moved to New York City to study at the School of Visual Arts. Quickly, his work began to earn acclaim. Haring used New York City as his canvas, creating vivid chalk drawings on sidewalks, walls, and subways. His unique, fanciful graphic style could be found in unlikely venues all over NYC, and his ability to transform an environment with the use of vibrant color, powerful symbology, and chaotic designs made him a critical success. His fame grew internationally, and he collaborated with several famous artists and performers of the time, including Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Haring believed that his art should be accessible to everyone, and his bold, cartoon- and graffiti-like style profoundly influenced art during the 1980s. Through his work, Haring advocated for children’s rights and spoke out about social ills. Crack is Wack, Haring’s mural on a handball court at 127th Street and 2nd Avenue, became an international commentary on the crack epidemic in New York City. In 1988, Haring was diagnosed with AIDS. He spent the following year Keith Haring in 1986, creating the Keith Haring Foundation to support AIDS organizations creating his timeless and various children’s initiatives. -

Press Release “Art is for everybody”: Major Keith Haring retrospective starting 21 August at Museum Folkwang Essen, 20 August 2020 – Between 21 August and 29 November 2020, Museum Folkwang will present a comprehensive exhibition of works by US artist Keith Haring (1958–1990). With his unmistakable motifs of dancing figures, barking dogs and flying saucers, his message was comprehensible to all. This exhibition presents Haring not only as an artist, but also as a performer, activist and organiser who never compromised on innovation and relevance in his quest for a fairer society. Some 200 exhibits are on display, including famous paintings, large-format drawings, early video works, sculptures, photographs and archive material. The exhibition positions Haring’s œuvre against the backdrop of global interconnectedness and contemporary social change, themes that the artist began to tackle early on in his career and which he promoted through artistic and commercial strategies alike. While his work is inspired by US popular culture — including the influence of underground culture, space travel, robotics and video games — at a very early stage he developed his own artistic strategy, one that made use of traditional visual media such as drawing and painting, but also incorporated photography, video and performance. His iconic style of painting was inspired by the comics of his youth, Expressionist and contemporary art, Chinese calligraphy and the graffiti of the New York streets. Haring’s work incorporates various influences from art history, philosophy and cultural theory, while deliberately employing ambiguity in his visual language. Haring first made a name for himself with thousands of chalk drawings in the New York subway system; though soon enough, he had secured wider recognition through international exhibitions and high-profile artistic collaborations. -

Graffiti is intertwined into human history, dating back to the Roman Empire. They made political statements and satirize current events. Modern graffiti achieves many of the same things – to state a message that doesn’t necessarily fit into the norms of society. Of course, graffiti isn’t new, it has been found in Greek and Roman towns from 2,000 years ago, the people who lived in caves drew on their walls before language existed…. By Nancy Coleman Oct. 18, 2019 For a time, a crucifix hung on the wall of the Grace House lobby. Then, in the early 1980s, something else took its place: the stark black outline of a crawling infant, in thick strokes of paint beaming outward. In the decades at Grace House, a Catholic youth center on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, the image was a tag: Keith Haring was here. The radiant baby, one of Haring’s most recognizable symbols, was the beginning of a three-story mural by the artist, who in one evening painted a dozen more figures dancing up the stairs. The characters he brought to life were quintessential Haring — the barking dog, a person with a corkscrew torso, conjoined figures with a hole in their shared chest. “When new kids came to that building and they saw all that stuff, they said, ʻOh my god, this is Keith Haring. Is this real?’” said Gary Mallon, who was the director of the youth center. But Grace House would eventually close, and the Ascension Church next door — which had leased space to the center — would eventually decide to sell the building. Haring’s work has been preserved — sections meticulously cut out of the wall and brought to Bonhams, where they will be auctioned as one work in November.
