Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Helping our Students and Alumni Live Their Dreams Dear Friends, 2012 – 2013 was a year marked by great stress and challenge for people close to home and world-wide who were touched by the violent events of the Boston Marathon on April 15th. Cambridge was affected in complex ways that both joined and separated us from others; Cambridge residents were seriously injured by the bombing; many of us had friends, family, sons, and daughters running that day; some of us were perilously close to the bombing sites on Boylston Street. But for us there was more: the dawning, incomprehensible realization that two of our own, a recent graduate of CRLS and his older brother, had become prime suspects in this horrific attack. As a result, many in Cambridge and CRLS have felt saddened, angered, and betrayed. We know now that it can happen here. Since last April, we have moved into a quieter time of self-reflection. Through the calming leadership of our superintendent and principal, and others to whom we turn for guidance, our school and our city have come together to cope and to heal. We have collectively taken these events as a challenge to build a better future – to define for ourselves the unique and deeper meanings of Boston Strong, Cambridge Strong, CRLS Strong, to recommit ourselves to the caring, equity, and quality that define life in Cambridge. We dedicate our Annual Report to the Boston Marathon victims and their families, and to our collective healing. We also re-dedicate ourselves to equity and social justice in education in a year also marked by the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington at which Dr. Martin Luther King delivered his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech. Here in Cambridge, at its yearly MLK Breakfast, Friends of Cambridge Rindge and Latin School and its two founders were awarded the Cambridge NAACP’s Education Award. For FOCRLS, the NAACP Education Award is our call to action – to work even harder for equity and justice in the education of our Cambridge public school children. With our community’s continued support, great things can and will happen for all of our students. For every FOCRLS scholarship to a first generation college student, for those in our “It Takes a Village” College Success Program who walk across the graduation stage with an earned “can do” sense of their future, for the student who became a FOCRLS Travel Fellow and returned from El Salvador determined to study human rights issues in college, for our Unsung Heroes, and for every one of the 121 faculty and staff members who’ve added something zesty and innovative to their teaching with a Faculty Innovation Grant – for all of this and more, we thank our hundreds of volunteers and financial contributors. Please read about our year, and as you do so, consider joining us in creating more opportunities that make a difference in the lives of Cambridge Rindge and Latin students. You won’t regret it. .......................................................................................................... 34 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY During 2012/13, our seventh fiscal year, Friends of Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (FOCRLS) raised $122,213, primarily in donations from CRLS families, Cambridge/corporate businesses, foundations, alumni, and generous community members, bringing the total of our funds raised to over $320,000! Accomplishments of Friends of CRLS during the past year include: Faculty Innovation Grants: 14 grants of up to $1,000 each to teachers and other staff for innovative proposals for in-classroom and extracurricular enrichment. The Unsung Heroes Program, funded by FOCRLS and administered by the CRLS Deans of Students, awarded to 16 emerging student achievers each semester for their efforts in citizenship, stewardship, gains in attendance, athletic leadership, and academic improvement, 280 students to date. Travel Fellowship funds were awarded to three students, making it possible for them to participate in educational trips to London and El Salvador. Five FOCRLS college scholarships of $1,000 each were presented: three First Scholars awards; and two Saheed Future Educations scholarships honoring retired CRLS principal Dr. Christopher Saheed. An award of $500 was given to a CRLS

    “Elsa Dorfman: Me and My Camera” Museum of Fine Arts/Boston Harvey Silverglate’s Reception Speech Dear family, dear friends, Thank you for coming. This MFA showing of a selection of Elsa’s work initially seemed to both Elsa and me to be somewhat funereal. After all, the concept of approaching the end of one’s career has a certain resonance, especially for Elsa, who has mothballed her Polaroid 20x24 Land camera and undertaken, with help, the task of organizing her vast and sprawling collection of prints, both black-and-whites and color Polaroids. Elsa will reach her 83rd birthday five weeks from now. She stopped taking portraits on her Polaroid camera in April 2019—a combination of the infirmities accompanying her advanced age and the aging of the film. There is little useable film left, and a year from now there may be none, unless John Reuter and Nafis Azad and their team pull off another miraculous rescue (as they’ve been doing for several years now). It was a wholly welcome and delightfully unexpected surprise to both Elsa and me when Anne Havinga told Elsa that the Museum was planning to do a show of her work. The two parts of this show are like bookends of Elsa’s career in photography—black-and-white photos that appeared in her 1974 book titled Elsa’s Housebook: A Woman’s Photojournal, and a select group of her 20x24 Polaroid self-portraits. As it turned out, ELSA’S HOUSEBOOK was one of the first of its kind—a diary-like account that used photographs of her family and friends (many of whom are here today) to tell a coherent story about their visits to our Cambridge home at 19 Flagg Street in the early 1970s.

    UC-Creeley_45-05.qxd 6/22/07 11:27 AM Page 1 Introduction ROBERT CREELEY WAS BORN in Arlington, Massachusetts, in 1926, and grew up in rural West Acton. His father’s side of the family was well es- tablished in the state, but Creeley was raised in closer proximity to his mother’s people, who came from Maine. When he was four, his father died of pneumonia. This was followed closely by the removal of Creeley’s left eye, injured by shattered glass a few years before, and by the straitened circumstance of the Great Depression. His mother, a nurse, kept care of the family—Creeley had an older sister—and his mother’s character, his mother’s habits, necessarily left a strong imprint on his own. (“My cheek- bones resonate/with her emphasis,” he writes in “Mother’s Voice” [000].) Influential also were the losses and uncertainties, the drop in status, which left their mark in patterns of thought, attitude, and behavior. The trajec- tory of Creeley’s adult life, his travels, employments, friendships, house- holds, and loves, is but one trace of a deeper restlessness also recorded in his work—or so it is tempting to think given Creeley’s enduring fascina- tion with contingency and his frequent return, in writing and conversa- tion, to the biographical facts cited above. Yet the import of a fact is never a fact. Life itself is, like writing, an act of interpretation. “Whatever is pre- sumed of a life that designs it as a fixture of social intent, or form of fam- ily, or the effect of an overwhelming event, has little bearing here, even if one might in comfortable hindsight say that it all followed.”1 Disjunction, indeed, played an important role for Creeley—his refusals were often as important as what he embraced.

Biography / Administrative History Irwin Allen Ginsberg was born on June 3, 1926 in Newark, New Jersey to Louis and Naomi (Levy) Ginsberg.     welcome Dear Friends, Welcome to the opening concert of Emmanuel Music’s 45th sea- son! In our three major concerts we return to our beginnings and our core – the music of J.S. Bach. But we are bringing new per- spectives that promise to offer discoveries and revelations to all, whether you have been steeped in Bach’s music for years or are just now discovering its richness. Emmanuel Music began 45 years ago this December with the mission of performing Bach cantatas for Emmanuel Church’s Sunday services. Our weekly collaborative explo- rations of Bach’s music make us uniquely positioned to explore Bach in new ways that are both deeply understood and deeply felt. Bach is the father of classical music, and he created or foreshadowed virtually every development that followed. And so tonight we explore rearrangements – Bach’s own and those of others -- that let us hear some of his compositions newly and freshly. What happens when Bach reimagines a concerto for three harpsichords as a concerto for three violins? Or when Stravinsky puts his own stamp on selections from The Well-Tempered Clavier? Or when Ward Swingle rearranges selected Bach pieces for an a capella octet, with one voice to a part? Our ears open to the richness of his composi- tions and the range of voices and variations. We marvel that there is always more to discover. Two more major concerts will explore unusual aspects of Bach.
