  • George Edmund Street
DOES YOUR CHURCH HAVE WORK BY ONE OF THE GREATEST VICTORIAN ARCHITECTS? George Edmund Street Diocesan Church Building Society, and moved to Wantage. The job involved checking designs submitted by other architects, and brought him commissions of his own. Also in 1850 he made his first visit to the Continent, touring Northern France. He later published important books on Gothic architecture in Italy and Spain. The Diocese of Oxford is extraordinarily fortunate to possess so much of his work In 1852 he moved to Oxford. Important commissions included Cuddesdon College, in 1853, and All Saints, Boyne Hill, Maidenhead, in 1854. In the next year Street moved to London, but he continued to check designs for the Oxford Diocesan Building Society, and to do extensive work in the Diocese, until his death in 1881. In Berkshire alone he worked on 34 churches, his contribution ranging from minor repairs to complete new buildings, and he built fifteen schools, eight parsonages, and one convent. The figures for Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire are similar. Street’s new churches are generally admired. They include both grand town churches, like All Saints, Boyne Hill, and SS Philip and James, Oxford (no longer in use for worship), and remarkable country churches such as Fawley and Brightwalton in Berkshire, Filkins and Milton- under-Wychwood in Oxfordshire, and Westcott and New Bradwell in Buckinghamshire. There are still some people for whom Victorian church restoration is a matter for disapproval. Whatever one may think about Street’s treatment of post-medieval work, his handling of medieval churches was informed by both scholarship and taste, and it is George Edmund Street (1824–81) Above All Saints, Boyne His connection with the Diocese a substantial asset for any church to was beyond doubt one of the Hill, Maidenhead, originated in his being recommended have been restored by him.

  • Observations at Somerton, Oxon., 1973
Observations at Somerton, Oxon., 1973 By R. A. CHAMBERS SUMMARy During the autumn of I9 73 a watching briif was kept over a series ofpipe trenches dug for the installation of main drainage in and around the shrunken medieval village of Somerton, Oxon. (SP497287).' Continuous observation of the open trench sections provided material from the medieval village' and also enabled a reappraisal of the cemetery at Castle Yard (SP496288).' THE VILLAGE HIS report is concerned with the archaeological information from pipe trenches. T The historical and topographical background has been included to provide a context for the features encountered and is not a comprehensive account of the whole village,' which was one of the largest and richest in Ploughley Hundred during the Middle Ages. Since the medieval period the village has shrunk, leaving the present nucleated settlement with the Norman parish church on its southerr. edge (FIG. I). The deserted areas which surround the present village are for the most part under pasture with earthworks clearly visible (PL. Xl, A). On the west side of the village, Church Street forms a ' T ' junction with a hollow way shown by Davis' map to have been disused and under pasture by 1797.' Northwards the way ends by the assumed castle fishponds. Some 100 m. south-west of Church Street the h~llow way con tinues westwards and forms the boundary between some less pronounced village earthworks to the north and the edge of the open field to the south (PL. Xl, A)." The western limit of the open field and a further length of the hollow way lie buried by the mid nineteenth-century railway embankment.

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is the Sponsor of a proposed change to the current arrangements and procedures in the immediate airspace surrounding the airport. As the airport operators, and operators of the current Class D Controlled Airspace (CAS), RAF Brize Norton is managing this process on behalf of the MOD. If approved, the proposed change will provide enhanced protection to aircraft on the critical stages of flight in departure and final approach, and will provide connectivity between the RAF Brize Norton Control Zone (CTR) and the UK Airways network. In addition, the Airspace Change will deliver new Instrument Flight Procedures (IFP) utilising Satellite Based Navigation which will futureproof the procedures used at the Station. As part of the Civil Aviation Authority’s (CAA) Guidance on the Application of the Airspace Change Process (Civil Aviation Publication (CAP) 725) [Reference 1], BZN is required to submit a case to the CAA to justify its proposed Airspace Change, and to undertake consultation with all relevant stakeholders.
