Explicit examples 33 Bibliography 35 1 CHAPTER 1 Introduction The goal of this work is to provide a higher genus analog of Edixhoven's construction [2, Appendix] of Bertrand's [2] counter-example to Pink's relative Manin{Mumford conjecture (cf. Section 4.1 for the statement of the conjecture). This is done in Chapter 4, where further discussion of the conjecture and past work can be found. To give our construction, we must first develop the theory of pinchings a la Ferrand [8] in flat families and understand the behavior of the relative Picard functor for such pinchings, and this is the contents of Chapter 3. In Chapter 2 we recall some of the results and definitions we will need from algebraic geometry; the reader already familiar with these results should have no problem beginning with Chapter 3 and referring back only for references and to fix definitions. -

Facing History’s Poland Study Tour Confirmed Speakers and Tour Guides Speakers Jolanta Ambrosewicz-Jacobs, Director Center for Holocaust Studies at the Jagiellonian University Dr. Jolanta Ambrosewicz-Jacobs is the Director of the Center for Holocaust Studies at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. She received her Ph.D. in Humanities from Jagiellonian University. Dr. Ambrosewicz-Jacobs was a fellow at several institutions. She was a Pew Fellow at the Center for the Study of Human Rights at Columbia University, a visiting fellow at Oxford University and at Cambridge University, and a DAAD fellow at the Memorial and Educational Site House of the Wannsee Conference. She is also the author of Me – Us – Them. Ethnic Prejudices and Alternative Methods of Education: The Case of Poland and has published more than 50 articles on anti-Semitism in Poland, memory of the Holocaust, and education about the Holocaust. Anna Bando, President Association of Polish Righteous Among Nations The Association of Polish Righteous Among Nations was founded in 1985. Its members are Polish citizens who have been honored with the title and medal of Righteous Among the Nations. The goals of the society are to disseminate information about the occupation, the Holocaust and the actions of the Righteous, and to fight against anti-Semitism and xenophobia. Anna Bando, nee Stupnicka, together with her mother, Janina Stupnicka, were honored in 1984 as Righteous Among the Nations for their rescue of Liliana Alter, an eleven year old Jewish girl, from the Warsaw ghetto. The two smuggled her out of the ghetto as well as provided her false papers and sheltered her until the end of the war. -

Trip Report: ICCF11 Jim Corey, [email protected] Sandia National Laboratories Published by: www.newenergytimes.com Introduction On March 23, 1989, at the University of Utah, Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons announced that they had caused fusion reactions between deuterium nuclei to occur at room temperature, creating a potentially endless and benign source of energy for the world. Of course, this flew in the face of conventional physics, and scientists all over the world hurried to try to reproduce the effect. The major institutes in the US were unable to do so, and a US Department of Energy (DOE) Energy Research Advisory Panel (ERAB) declared that the effect was not real and that government funding for further research would essentially constitute waste, fraud, and abuse. Thus died the hope of cheap, endless energy through “cold fusion,” at least as far as the regular scientific community was concerned. On October 30 through November 5, 2004, I attended the 11th International Conference on Cold Fusion in Marseilles, France. (I had previously attended ICCF10 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.) As shown in Table 1, 163 people from all over the world came to Marseilles, including those who actually did achieve success after the 1989 announcement, those who heard about and joined the ongoing research, and those who are just excited about the prospects and want to stay in close touch with the field. Wroclaw Review of Law, Administration & Economics Vol 9:1, 2019 DOI: 10.2478/wrlae-2019-0002 An Analysis of Field Preferences of an Educational System Anna Ćwiąkała-Małys* Monika Mościbrodzka** Keywords higher education, synthetic measure of development, methods of multidimensional analysis Abstract It is the labour market that decides about the popularity of a field of studies. The area where the highest number of job offers appears is reflected in the offers of universities. However, it is very often mentioned in many media that future students decide to choose social and humane studies whose market chances are evaluated on a relatively low level. In the past 10 years, because of the decrease in the birth rate, the number of Polish students at various universities declined to about 700,000 people. In these years, it was observed that the number of studying men and women declined (to almost 30%). The lowest decrease in the number of students was observed at technical universities because of the fact that, at that time, the number of female students increased there. The reports have been published since 2008. They are the result of scientific research conducted since 2002 under the supervision of prof. H. Godlewska-Majkowska, Ph.D., full professor in the Warsaw School of Economics, in the Institute of Enterprise, Collegium of Business Administration of the Warsaw School of Economics. All the authors are the core members of a team that develops methodology of calculating regional investment attractiveness. -

HALL OF SCHOOL Andrew Wiles excitedly approaches PETER, who is standing in the hall. ANDREW WILES Peter, I want to show you something very exciting. Let’s go into this classroom. INT. CLASSROOM Andrew Wiles writes on the blackboard: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11...positive integers. 3, 5, 7, 11, 13...prime numbers. 23 = 2∙ 2∙ 2 35 = 3∙ 3∙ 3∙ 3∙ 3 xn = x∙∙∙x n-terms and explains to Peter the Fermat Conjecture; as he writes on the blackboard. ANDREW WILES The Fermat Conjecture states that the equation xn + yn = zn has no positive integer solutions, if n is an integer greater than 2. Note that 32+42=52 so the conjecture is not true when n=2. The famous French mathematician Pierre Fermat made this conjecture in 1637. See how beautiful and symmetric the equation is! Peter, in a mocking voice, goes to the blackboard and writes on the blackboard: 1963-1637=326. PETER Well, one thing is clear...the conjecture has been unproved for 326 years...you will never prove it! 2. ANDREW WILES Don’t be so sure. I have already shown that it is only necessary to prove it when n is a prime number and, besides, Fermat could not have known too much more about it than I do.
