1. Introduction

Knockane graveyard was surveyed using a Magellan ProMark 3 Rover and Base sta on and presented in Irish Transverse Mercator (ITM). The GPS graveyard survey datasets were exported using Hangle so ware from GPS Ireland and then exported into AutoCAD and fi nished using Adobe Illustrator. Reference numbers men oned in the main body of the report relate to the ID point given when the survey was undertaken (see A3 plan, Figure 2 below). A digital photographic record and surname database was also compiled to complement the cartographic survey (see Appendices). Digital photographs of all the features within the graveyard are referenced in the appendix and all photographs are included on the a ached disc.

The survey was undertaken with due regard to: .Conserva on principles as produced by ICOMOS in the Venice and Burra Charters

.The publica on in 2004 of the Architectural Heritage Protec on-Guidelines for Planners by the DoEHLG, (now DAHG) .The heritage objec ves as outlined and adopted in the current Kerry County Council Development Plan 2009-2015, Built Heritage (Chapter 10)

The Conven on for the Protec on of the Architectural Heritage of Europe was signed at the Granada Conven on in 1985 and ra fi ed by Ireland in 1997. The conserva on aims as stated in the Burra Charter are for the reten on or restora on of historical signifi cance with the minimum of physical interven on and that such interven on work be reversible, maintain the structure’s character and se ng and that all conserva on works should be undertaken following comprehensive research.

An informa on booklet on care and maintenance for tombs should be compiled and sup- plied to the relevant parish church.

All of these graveyards are recorded monuments protected under the Na onal Monu- ments (Amendment) Act 1994 and under the jurisdic on of Kerry County Council. All proposed works should be carried out by experience competent personnel under ex- pert archaeological / architectural guidance and supervision. As these sites are recorded monuments conserva on and restora on works can only be carried out under license from the Na onal Monuments Service of the Dept. of Environment, Heritage and Local Gov.

2. Site Location

Knockane graveyard is situated in the townland Meenbannivane approximately 1km south-east of Knocknagoshel and circa 12 km north north-east of (Figure 1). The site is situated on sloping, south facing land overlooking the Tullyleague River, low lying ground at OD 100m (Plate 1).

3. General

The burial ground at Meenbannivane dates to the la er half of the 19th century possibly around 1860 and it may have been selected on the basis of an earlier Children’s Burial Ground. No trace of the use of the local name ‘Knockane’ could be found in documen- tary or cartographic sources. The name Meenbannivane is similar to Kilbannivane near Castleisland (KE040-028).

4. Approach and parking

Knockane is approached from a third class road west from the N21 exit at Headleys Bridge or south from Knocknagoshel village. There is ample carparking provided along the roadway (Plate 2 & Figure 2).

5. Entrance

The entrance into the graveyard is via an iron gate set between two square, squat, rub- blestone and uncapped piers (Plate 2).

5.1 Recommendations

No recommenda ons necessary

Laurence Dunne Archaeology 3 Archaeological Survey, Knockane Graveyard, Co. Kerry.

6. Services & Signage

There are no water or waste collec on services provided .

6.1 Recommendations

Water and waste collec on should be provided.

7. Boundaries

The rectangular graveyard is enclosed by a low rubble stone cement capped wall along its northern limits. While the west, south and east boundary walls are higher at 1.6m with ‘soldier’ capping (Plates 2-3 ).

7.1 Recommendations

No recommenda ons necessary.

8. Pathways

There is a formal gravelled pedestrian path extending around the en re inner perimeter of the burial ground (Figure 2 & Plates 2-4).Linked to the perimeter path is a N-S con- nected at mid point to an E-W spur (Figure 2). The steeply sloping terrain and density of the burial plots has made the possibility of in- ternal desire lines unlikely. There are no other paths or desire lines in the interior of the old graveyard which is well maintained and grass kept low.

8.1 Recommendations

No recommenda ons necessary

Laurence Dunne Archaeology 4 Archaeological Survey, Knockane Graveyard, Co. Kerry.

9. Tombs

There is only a single tomb in Knockane graveyard (Plate 5). This is most likely due to the fact that above ground family tombs were going out of fashion by the late 19th century and the graveyard was only opened around 1860. The two ered strong box type tomb was erected by John O’Connor in 1862 of ashlar limestone and is in good repair.

9.1 Recommendations

No recommenda ons necessary

10. Named Headstones

There are four hundred and forty one (441) recorded named headstones in total at Knock- ane. The earliest headstone recorded in Knockane records the death of Denis Leane who died in 1876, (Appendix 2). The vast majority are in good order however a few of the ‘Cel c’ style type in the older area are completed engulfed in ivy. A large unusual head- stone to Catherine O’Halloran in the church has par ally collapsed while another, (Barry HS No. 186), lies sha ered on the ground. Many of the headstones in the medieval burial ground area also require professional cleaning as the lichen has made the inscrip ons virtually illegible. A single headstone was inscribed in Irish. This unusual Cel c revivalist stone is also paint- ed in a variety of colours (HS No.175). There are four headstones of Irishmen who served with the U.S. armed forces two of whom are O’Connor’s which is one of the most com- mon names in the area (HS Nos. 236, 292, 296 and 434, Appendix 2).

10.1 Recommendations

No recommenda ons necessary

Laurence Dunne Archaeology 5 Archaeological Survey, Knockane Graveyard, Co. Kerry.

11. Graveslabs

There is one horizontal rectangular graveslab in Knockane for the Carmody family in good order (GRVS 1, Figure 2 & Appendix 3).

12. Unnamed, unhewn, Gravemarkers

There are eight unhewn, unnamed gravemarkers in Knockane. These unnamed grave- markers are denoted on the plan of the graveyard as blue triangles (Figure 2). It is evident from the spa al pa erning of them that they refl ect an informal grave-se ng in that the ground around them is usually simply grass without a formal plot.

12.1 Recommendations

The unnamed headstones and their associated informal grass covered graves should be retained and protected without further intrusion from nearby formalised grave se ngs. No burials should take place in these informal burial areas unless proof of ownership can be established.

13. Perforated stone

There is one perforated or holed unhewn gravemarker in Knockane graveyard. The low rectangular slab has small centrally disposed hole in its upper limits. The hole is straight and was most likely mechanically drilled (Figure 2 & Plate 6).

13.1 Recommendations

No recommenda ons necessary

14. Summary of recommendations for future manage- ment/conservation of Knockane church & graveyard
