My Sister's House was founded in 2000 as a community response to the lack of resources available to Asian and Pacific Islander survivors of domestic violence in the Sacramento/Central Valley region. First, community leaders initiated a public education campaign to raise the awareness of domestic violence and the comfort level of the Asian Pacific Islander community members to access services. They also started the Women to Work Program so that survivors in need could obtain services whether or not they were in a shelter and begin rebuilding their lives. Three years later, My Sister's House successfully started its 24/7 multi-lingual help line and opened a three- bedroom house that continues to provide a Safe Haven for up to six women and children. In 2012 My Sister's House opened its 6 bed transitional house. In 2014, My Sister's House started My Sister's Café, in part to provide job training opportunities. In 2016, My Sister's House launched a 6 bed shelter for victims of human trafficking.

Today My Sister's House assists approximately 400 victims of domestic violence and human trafficking in person and answers more than 2,000 crisis calls.

For 37 years, CAAM has exposed audiences to new voices and communities, advancing our collective understanding of the American experience through programs specifically designed to engage the Asian American community and the public at large. Since it was founded in 1980, CAAM has built a reputation for telling the most compelling and artfully told stories of the Asian American experience.

CAAMFest (presented by the Center for Asian American Media) is the nation’s largest showcase for new Asian and Asian American films, annually presenting approximately 120 works to audiences totaling 26,000 in San Francisco and Oakland. CAAMFest is a major cultural attraction for the city, welcoming more than 200 guest filmmakers and film professionals from around the country and internationally for the 11-day event. Since 1982, the festival has been an important launching point for Asian American independent filmmakers as well as a vital source for new Asian American cinema.

Motivated by the innovative ways Asian Americans are contributing to and shaping American identity and culture, CAAMFest aspires to incite dialogue and community engagement. Starting in 2018, CAAMFest is moving to the month of May – Asian Pacific American Heritage Month – a time in which civic, cultural and corporate entities celebrate Asian American legacies and communities.
