Acids and Aldehydes Acids and Aldehydes An Acid is an organic compound with acidic properties, mostly produced in the plants. Some organic acids are with carboxyl group -COOH, group -SO2OH. Other groups can also confer acidity, usually weakly: the thiol group -SH, the enol group, and the phenol group. Organice acids are commonly used for acidulant, antioxidant, flavoring agent, and some possess antibacterial activities. An aldehyde is an organic compound containing a functional group with the structure -CHO, consisting of a carbonyl center (a carbon double-bonded to oxygen) with the carbon atom also bonded to hydrogen and to an R group, which is any generic alkyl or side chain. Many aldehydes are found in essential oils and often contribute to their favorable odors, e.g. cinnamaldehyde, cilantro, and vanillin. Possibly because of the high reactivity of the formyl group, aldehydes are not common in several of the natural building blocks: amino acids, nucleic acids, lipids. Most sugars, however, are derivatives of aldehydes. These aldoses exist as hemiacetals, a sort of masked form of the parent aldehyde. For example, in aqueous solution only a tiny fraction of glucose exists as the aldehyde. www.MedChemExpress.com 1 Acids and Aldehydes Inhibitors & Modulators (+)-Usnic acid (-)-Hydroxycitric acid Cat. Polyphenols are secondary metabolites of plants and include a variety of chemical structures, from simple molecules such as phenolic acids to condensed tannins and highly polymerized compounds. Caeic acid (3,4-dihydroxycinnamic acid) is one of the hydroxycinnamate metabolites more widely distributed in plant tissues. It is present in many food sources, including coee drinks, blueberries, apples, and cider, and also in several medications of popular use, mainly those based on propolis. Its derivatives are also known to possess anti-inammatory, antioxidant, antitumor, and antibacterial activities, and can contribute to the prevention of atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases. is review is an overview of the available information about the chemical synthesis and antioxidant activity of caeic acid derivatives.

  • Calcium Supplements | Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
PATIENT & CAREGIVER EDUCATION Calcium Supplements This information explains calcium supplements and how to take them. Calcium is a mineral that you need to build and maintain healthy bones. If you don’t get enough calcium from your diet, your body will take it from your bones. This can cause osteoporosis. Osteoporosis Osteoporosis develops when you lose bone tissue, which makes your bones more likely to fracture (break). Osteoporosis is most common in females who have gone through menopause (a permanent end of your monthly periods). It can develop in anyone, including males, due to medication or illness. Some risk factors for osteoporosis include: Having a thin build Being of Northern European or Asian descent Having fair skin Going through menopause early (before the age of 45) Taking certain steroid medications for longer than 3 months Calcium Supplements 1/9 Not getting enough physical activity Not getting enough calcium in your diet (or from dietary supplements) Smoking Drinking too much alcohol (more than 2 drinks per day for females or 3 drinks per day for males) Taking aromatase inhibitors (medications that stop the production of estrogen and are used to treat breast cancer) Vitamin D Vitamin D is a vitamin that helps your body absorb calcium. Your body makes vitamin D after being exposed to the sun. Vitamin D is also found in some foods. It can be hard to get enough vitamin D from just sunlight and foods. Your doctor or clinical dietitian nutritionist might tell you to take vitamin D supplements. These can be prescription or over-the-counter vitamin D supplement pills or calcium supplements with vitamin D added.

  • Metabotropic Glutamate Receptors
mGluR Metabotropic glutamate receptors mGluR (metabotropic glutamate receptor) is a type of glutamate receptor that are active through an indirect metabotropic process. They are members of thegroup C family of G-protein-coupled receptors, or GPCRs. Like all glutamate receptors, mGluRs bind with glutamate, an amino acid that functions as an excitatoryneurotransmitter. The mGluRs perform a variety of functions in the central and peripheral nervous systems: mGluRs are involved in learning, memory, anxiety, and the perception of pain. mGluRs are found in pre- and postsynaptic neurons in synapses of the hippocampus, cerebellum, and the cerebral cortex, as well as other parts of the brain and in peripheral tissues. Eight different types of mGluRs, labeled mGluR1 to mGluR8, are divided into groups I, II, and III.
