CURRENT EVENT STATUS  Hurricane Hermine is located about 85 miles south of Apalachicola and is moving north- northeast at 14 mph with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph. A slight increase in forward speed is expected during the next day or so.  On the forecast track, the center of Hermine will be near the Florida coast in the hurricane warning area tonight or early Friday. Some slight additional strengthening is forecast before and then weakening will begin after Hermine crosses the coast.  Locally heavy rainfall and gusty winds of tropical storm strength will begin passing in squalls across North Florida this evening and into tomorrow.  Potential Local Impacts: o A high risk of rip currents beginning Friday. o Locally heavy rainfall will begin falling this evening portions of St. Johns County with rainfall totals potentially reaching 5-7 inches. Localized flooding from pockets of heavy rainfall is possible. o Extended period of tropical storm force winds. o If you have experienced storm tide flooding problems from past tropical storm events you will likely experience flooding again with this storm. o Isolated tornadoes are possible and the tornado threat is increasing, particularly during the day on Friday. o Deteriorating marine conditions over the adjacent Atlantic waters late tonight through Friday.  St. Johns County is under a Tropical Storm Warning. A Tropical Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected within the warning area, within 36 hours.  St. Johns County is under a Tornado Watch and Flood Watch.  Florida State EOC is activated to a Level 1.

COMMUNITY CANCELLATIONS / CLOSURES  St. Johns County School District has cancelled school for Friday, September 2, 2016.  St. Johns County Beach vehicular access gates will be closed today, Thursday, September 1st – Friday, September 2nd. The beach remains open to pedestrians.  All St. Johns County Parks and Recreation Fields are closed today, Thursday, September 1st and tomorrow, Friday, September 2, 2016.  The pool at the Solomon Calhoun Community Center is closed. It expected to reopen on Friday, September 2nd at 11:00 a.m. weather permitting.  St. Johns County libraries will be closed Friday, September 2, 2016.  St. Johns County Library book drops will be closed and locked to prevent possible water intrusion. All due dates will be extended to prevent late fees.  Bartram Trail Branch Library has cancelled ACT/SAT prep courses this evening, Thursday September 1st.  The Southeast Branch Library has cancelled the following: o Thursday, September 1st - Zen Meditation & Mindfulness o Friday, September 2nd - Mother & Daughter Self Defense Course o Saturday, September 3rd - Belly Dance Basics  St. Johns County Property Appraisers Office will be closed tomorrow, Friday, September 2, 2016.  St. Johns County Clerk of the Court will be closed tomorrow, Friday, September 2, 2016.  St. Johns County Sheriff’s Administrative Offices will be closed tomorrow, Friday, September 2, 2016.  St. Johns County Tax Collector will be adjusting their hours to open at noon on Friday, September 2, 2016.  St. Johns County Supervisor of Elections will be closed tomorrow, Friday, September 2, 2016.  St. Johns County and its contractors will delay all garbage, recycling and yard debris collection on Friday, September 2nd, 2016.  Red Flag conditions exist on all St. Johns County beaches and Marine Rescue is advising beachgoers to not enter the ocean. Lifeguards towers will not be staffed for the duration of the storm. However, Marine Rescue zone patrols will be continuing.

 St. Johns County Emergency Management is closely monitoring Hurricane Hermine and is participating in conference calls with the Florida Division of Emergency Management, Jacksonville and National Hurricane Center for the most up-to-date information.

 St. Johns County Emergency Management is requesting that any departments or organizations that are taking any actions relative to the storm please advise us by email so the information can be added to the situation reports.
