COMMUNITY Village Halls

Q1. Does your Village Hall offer the range of activities you would like to see?

Yes No N/A Clunbury 137 (74.5%) 15 (8.1%) 32 (17.4%) Clunton 83 (54.6%) 15 (9.9%) 54 (35.5%) Kempton 28 (27.7%) 20 (19.8%) 53 (52.5%)

If ‘No’ please describe the activities you would enjoy and where:

Comment Gender Age Location 1.1 "Flicks in the Sticks" Male 50-59 Kempton 1.2 A few more films? not given 1.3 An exercise or pilates class Female 60-69 Clunton 1.4 Art Coffee mornings Get together Female 60-69 Clunton 1.5 But I would also like to see more talks - local Female 70-79 Clunbury history/geography/fauna & flora 1.6 Children's activities at school field Female Clunbury 1.7 Could be more social life at Clunton Village Hall Female 60-69 Clunton 1.8 Could be used more e.g. rotating cafe between Male 30-39 Clunton halls, guest speakers However events they do have are good & well attended' 1.9 Difficult to know how to make a small hall viable. Male 70-79 Clunton 1.10 Don't know - never visited it. Female 60-69 Little Brampton 1.11 Evening classes? I'm really impressed by the range Female 60-69 Clunbury of activities we do get! How about more films & events such as rugby match afternoons with TV 1.12 Exercise class or similar Female 40-49 Kempton 1.13 Fete, CarBoot, BBQ, Fare Female 21-29 Kempton 1.14 Films Male 60-69 Kempton 1.15 Fitness class. Female 40-49 Clunbury 1.16 Flicks in the Sticks would be enjoyable. Female 60-69 Clunbury 1.17 Hall isn't big enough for physical activities in groups Female 50-59 Clunton 1.18 I go to Methodist Church Hall for a Female 60-69 Llanbrook brilliant Pilates class (Janie Cromer). My nearest hall is ! 1.19 I have never visited the village halls at all the Female 60-69 Walcot venues above. 1.20 If possible, I would like the Clunbury Hall to offer Female 60-69 Twitchen short mat bowling. This activity could be enjoyed by all members of the village. 1.21 Keep fit etc Male 60-69 Clunton 1.22 Learn a language Holiday activities for families not given Flower arranging Mini market 1.23 Living on the edge of Kempton, we tend to use Female 60-69 Kempton Aston on and/or . Kempton/Clunbury/Clunton VH have more difficult access roads and less parking 1.24 Maybe more for teenagers Female 60-69 Clunbury 1.25 More children activities etc Keep fit classes etc Female 40-49 Clunbury 1.26 More children’s activities Female 30-39 Clunbury

1.27 More evening activities in Kempton and Clunton Male 60-69 Clunbury 1.28 More films Female 70-79 Beambridge 1.29 More fun things in Kempton Male 70-79 Kempton 1.30 More social activities in Kempton. Current Female 50-59 Kempton provision is outdated and not regular enough use is made of the hall. Music and film events would be good - talks too. Try Arts Alive. 1.31 More social activities such as "Tea at the Ritz", Female 60-69 Kempton Curry and film nights; Clunbury Cafe style etc. 1.32 More social evenings Male 50-59 Kempton 1.33 More social events Male 60-69 Clunton 1.34 More social events Female 60-69 Clunton 1.35 More things for children to do Female 21-29 Clunbury 1.36 Musical performance but not folk music or country Male 70-79 Clunton and western. 1.37 New - Don't know yet. Female 40-49 Kempton 1.38 No village hall at Twitchen. Keep Fit for Over 60s Female 60-69 Twitchen classes. Monthly Jumble Sales for public to sell and re-use items no longer required. 1.39 Not specific but feel the Hall should be used more Female 50-59 Kempton often, it is a shame that it is not used to its full potential. Maybe offer classes, workshops, dances? 1.40 Nothing specific, but the hall is hardly used when Male 50-59 Kempton compared with somewhere like Lydbury which is a shame 1.41 One big community hall. Male 60-69 Clunbury 1.42 Other activities such as bring and buys, live music, Female 21-29 Clunbury flicks in the sticks might bring a bit more variety to current activities. 1.43 Quizzes Female 50-59 1.44 Some years ago there were monthly meetings Female 70-79 Clunton where local people talked about their interests or Coppice local history - e.g., Brian and John Morgan reminiscing; someone exhibiting their stamp collection and interesting holiday experience etc. 1.45 Still finding out! Male 50-59 Kempton 1.46 Talks, local history - Clunbury. Female 50-59 Clunbury 1.47 Unfortunately I think missed opportunity leaves the Female 50-59 Twitchen three halls too small but needing time and funding whereas one big enough for sporting activities and big enough for events would serve the community much better. Therefore I cannot define my answers to the boxes. 1.48 Very occasionally attend films - music events, etc Male 60-69 Llanbrook at local venues but not as far as I can remember any of the above. 1.49 We attend Bedstone, Village Hall. Male 80-89 Llanhowell 1.50 Youth events i.e. flicks in the sticks Female 40-49 Clunton 1.51 Zumba, quiz. Female 21-29 Purslow

Male 60-69 Little Brampton 2.13 Still finding out. Male 50-59 Kempton 2.14 There are things often on at weekdays that I Female 21-29 Clunbury cannot attend. 2.15 There was a yoga class but not at a convenient Female 60-69 Clunton time early evening would have been better

Q3. If Clunbury, Clunton and Kempton residents worked together, it may be possible to hold village hall/community events that would not be viable for just one community. Would you be prepared to support joint events?

Yes No 217 (87.5%) 31 (12.5%)

No comment box provided but these comments were added by respondents. 3a Ticked yes with comment - depending on what they were! Ticked yes with comment - but opportunity already lost as three individual halls, none 3b big enough for sporting events, etc., but all needing both financial & commitment to stay viable & not big enough for other events either 3c Ticked no with comment - close down 2 to save money 3d Don’t know 3e Depends on the event

Social Fabric

Q4. Are you concerned about the age and social mix of communities in Clunbury Parish?

Yes No 60 (23.1%) 200 (76.9%)

Please describe your concerns:

Comment Gender Age Location 4.1 Aged population Female 50-59 Beambridge 4.2 Ageing population due to people moving here to Male 21-29 Clunton retire and high property cost make it difficult for younger people to buy local houses to stay in the area. 4.3 An ageing community. We need some growth to Male 70-79 Clunton encourage younger families. 4.4 An imbalance between retired and younger (18+) Female 60-69 Kempton age group. Need for employment opportunities and affordable housing. 4.5 As always a lack of younger numbers Male 30-39 Clunton 4.6 Average age of residents seems to be increasing. Male 60-69 not given Retaining young people and economically active people in the parish. 4.7 Change of demographics. Displacement of Male 50-59 Clunbury established families and locals. 4.8 Clunbury Parish is an older community. I do not Male 50-59 Kempton see this as a problem. The older residents are providing the "community" that younger residents do not. 4.9 Couldnt care Male 30-39 The Llan 4.10 Don't know Female 60-69 Little Brampton 4.11 Elderly - we need houses for LOCAL youngsters to Female 60-69 Little encourage them to stay in the area Brampton 4.12 Employment potential and affordable housing will Male 60-69 Coston ensure younger generations will stay within the area.

Return to contents page 4 Clunbury Parish Plan Review 2015 - Supplementary Information (Issue 2)

4.13 Even small houses in the Parish are too expensive Male 50-59 Obley for local young couples to rent/buy. 4.14 Events provided for younger members - i.e. 10 - 16 Female 60-69 Clunbury yrs - but very little participation of that age group + parents. 4.15 Everyone is getting old and stuffy Male 50-59 Obley 4.16 Families who have moved into the parish from Male 60-69 Clunbury distant communities have disrupted village life. 4.17 generally in the area I would welcome a wider age Female 60-69 Walcot range 4.18 House prices in the area are likely to prevent young Male 70-79 Clunton people and families from buying houses in this area. 4.19 I want to see our young people being able to stay Female 50-59 Twitchen and live in the parish so as a balance of age groups is maintained and also who understand that just because it is rural does not mean it does not need to move on which can be the view of some people moving into the area. Progress is just as important here as anywhere else. Also, our young people should be able to get planning permission for houses without affordable restrictions. They should not be constrained. 4.20 In Clunbury, it is now better than it was a few years Female 70-79 Clunbury ago 4.21 Increasing ageing population is unsustainable in Female 60-69 Cwm long run. We must attract more families and retain young people if we want to avoid becoming a geriatric ghetto. 4.22 It is very typical of rural demographics, however it Male 50-59 Clunbury would be good to try to engineer more diversity of age, income and background, for instance by housing - affordable and social. 4.23 It would be good to see a higher proportion of Male 50-59 Llanbrook younger people e.g. under 40. 4.24 It's obviously a concern that we're all a bit of a Female 60-69 Kempton "pensioners' paradise" in this area - fewer + fewer young people, lack of relevant employment and lack of affordable housing and transport all contribute to this concern 4.25 Lack of young people Male 60-69 Clunbury 4.26 Less working class people now live in the Parish, Female 60-69 Clunton creating a less balanced society and generally less families with children and less young work age people. 4.27 Less working class people tend to live in Clunbury Male 60-69 Clunton Parish 4.28 Limited affordable housing to buy or rent No public Male 50-59 Clunton transport makes life difficult without a car 4.29 Living in the outskirts of the parish I'm afraid I don't Female 60-69 Walcot know the social/age mix figures. 4.30 Maybe more affordable houses for the young & low Female 50-59 Clunbury income households. 4.31 More child bearing age residents needed Male 60-69 Clunton 4.32 More could be done to attract the younger element Male 50-59 Clunton to Village Hall activities.

Return to contents page 5 Clunbury Parish Plan Review 2015 - Supplementary Information (Issue 2)

4.33 More retired and elderly. Fewer young adults. Male 50-59 Beambridge 4.34 More young people with families would be good. Female 60-69 Clunbury 4.35 More youngsters would be good - especially for Female 80-89 Kempton Clunbury School 4.36 Most people in Clunton are quite a bit older than Female 50-59 Clunton me. Hardly know anyone in Kempton of Clunbury - not been here very long 4.37 New to area - not able to answer Male 50-59 Kempton 4.38 No hope for young people Female 50-59 Obley 4.39 Not enough young families and too many incomer Female 60-69 Clunton retirees.Sadly far too few proper locals. They have become a minority 4.40 Not enough young families in area. Houses too Female 40-49 Obley expensive for young people to get on the housing township/ ladder. Llanbrook 4.41 Not enough young participants Female 80-89 Clunbury 4.42 Not enough young people and families - Male 40-49 Clunton increasingly white middle class urban/suburban southern retired. Need for social and affordable housing. 4.43 Not enough young people due in part to the lack of Female 70-79 Clunton affordable housing - villages will die if we don't support young people 4.44 Not enough younger families to balance senior Male 60-69 Kempton citizens 4.45 Not enough younger people settling in the area. Female 21-29 Obley However do not now how we would rectify this. 4.46 Only concern is about people trying to change us. Male 60-69 Clunbury We are an 'older' community and there is nothing wrong with that. Older people DO things. 4.47 People seem to keep in their own little groups. 70-79 Clunton 4.48 Population getting older. not enough affordable Female 60-69 Clunton housing for young people. 4.49 Probably too many old folk (like me!) Male 70-79 Clunton 4.50 Somewhat concerned. Female 60-69 Llanbrook 4.51 The age and social mix seems to be just fine Male 50-59 Kempton 4.52 The community in Clunton does not reflect the Male 40-49 Clunton ethnic mix in modern Britain 4.53 The community is getting older.ie young people are Male 50-59 Clunton being forced out. 4.54 The community needs some younger blood. Male 40-49 Little Brampton 4.55 The lack of housing opportunities for the young will Male 50-59 Cwm be needed to replace the currently active retirees who run everything at the moment. 4.56 The poplularity of our area for retirees is tricky - it Female 50-59 Cwm provided keen V. H. committee members, but also creates a hatred of change - no affordable housing for young people and no understanding of the demands of a working environment. 4.57 The population is quite top heavy. Female 21-29 Clunton 4.58 There appears to be a good mix. If there were more Male 60-69 Clunbury young couples would there be sufficient activities available locally?

Return to contents page 6 Clunbury Parish Plan Review 2015 - Supplementary Information (Issue 2)

4.59 There have been a good number of new people Female 70-79 Beambridge recently of younger ages - but we could always do with more 20 - 40 year olds + young children for the school. The school is a great asses to Clunbury 4.60 There is an issue about integration particularly Female 60-69 Clunbury across the generations 4.61 Too elderly, centred around alcohol events. Female 40-49 Clunton Geared towards affluence. 4.62 Too few affordable rented properties, e.g., for Female 70-79 Clunton young families. Too few affordable houses for sale, Coppice e.g., for young families. Therefore social mix tends to be increasingly "top heavy" with older retired "comfortably off". However - these are often contributing generously in time and effort to parish life!! Employment opportunities are limited and public transport negligible. 4.63 Too focused on the aging population and not Female 40-49 Clunbury enough on the young families/children of the area 4.64 Too many cliques Female 60-69 Clunton 4.65 Too many older people. Young couples cannot Female 50-59 Clunton afford to buy or even rent locally 4.66 Too many people retire up here making houses Male 60-69 Clunton expensive for locals. 4.67 We are a community of the old and middle class Male 60-69 Kempton and well off 4.68 We seem to be living in an increasingly ageing and Female 70-79 Kempton middle class community 4.69 With house prices the way they are it's unlikely Female 70-79 Clunton there will be an influx of young people into these communities. Shame !!

Q5. Do you think there is a sense of community in your area?

Yes No 230 (90.2%) 25 (9.8%)

How do you think it could be developed?

Comment Gender Age Location 5.1 Asking members of the community what interests Female 50-59 Coston they would like to share and develop in a like minded group. 5.2 Be inclusive Female 40-49 Clunton 5.3 By holding joint events in the village halls. Female 60-69 Kempton 5.4 By making it bigger but then I'd probably oppose Male 60-69 Kempton any relevant planning applications. 5.5 By persuading more members of younger age Male Clunbury groups to take part in and assist with events 5.6 Depends what you think "sense of community is? Female 50-59 Kempton Not enough people offer help/support - the same few people do everything. People/Neighbours can be very inconsiderate of others. 5.7 Events to attract the widest possible range of Male 50-59 Kempton attendees. 5.8 good neighbours. Male 40-49 Little Brampton 5.9 I think this develops over several years and does Female 50-59 Twitchen not necessarily have to be coerced as the inclusion of the question looks to imply. 5.10 Informal get togethers - outside the church or Female 70-79 Clunbury village hall 5.11 It is only a micro-community sharing aches and pains. Male 70-79 Clunton 5.12 It would be good if there was a play area (poss Female 60-69 Clunbury park) for the children as there are quite a few now resident. Poss raise funds for above from grants & joint events 5.13 Joint ventures in village halls Male 60-69 Kempton 5.14 Just getting people together more - I feel perhaps, Male 50-59 Clunbury more active projects might work - logs for labour / community growing / pigs etc. 5.15 Keep local housing for local people. School should Male 60-69 Clunbury support local community. 5.16 Keep the young Male 50-59 Obley 5.17 Leave it alone. Most 'activities' and community Male 60-69 Clunbury events are organised by older members of community who have most time. It works. 5.18 More communication?! EMail, website? Female 50-59 Beambridge 5.19 More community projects rather than events. Female 60-69 Clunbury Events that might attract young people & adolescents 5.20 More group activities to cater for varied shared Male 60-69 Coston interests. 5.21 More interactive events /shared with other local Female 60-69 Kempton communities and attractive to a range of people 5.22 More participation of school within the community. Female 60-69 Clunbury 5.23 More secular activities/fund raising, with a wider Female 60-69 Llanbrook perspective.

Return to contents page 8 Clunbury Parish Plan Review 2015 - Supplementary Information (Issue 2)

5.24 More should be done to include young families with Female 60-69 Clunton children. Too many 'grey groups' in comparison 5.25 More social meeting places. Pub in Clunbury for Male 50-59 Beambridge example 5.26 Not in Clunton Coppice. Female 70-79 Clunton Coppice 5.27 Not required. Male 70-79 Purslow 5.28 Organising events to include all ages Female 70-79 Clunton 5.29 People being more friendly 70-79 Clunton 5.30 People who want a sense of community can easily Female 50-59 Cwm find it in this very hospitable area. But it should not be taken for granted. 5.31 People will create their own community be it airgun Male 50-59 Cwm clubs or ceilidhs but nust not be taken for granted. 5.32 Rather the question should be: "Do people who live Male 70-79 Clunton here want a sense of community?" 5.33 Sometimes half of the village speak/the other half Female 40-49 Clunbury don't!!Maybe an idea for younger generation to mix more with older generation/offer them help etc 5.34 Speaking for Clunton there is a "them and us" Male 50-59 Clunton attitude. 5.35 There appears to be. Male 60-69 Clunbury 5.36 There's always room for further development Male 40-49 Beambridge 5.37 Until the local community "interacts" it will never Female 60-69 Clunton change. 5.38 why does it need to be developed? Male 70-79 Kempton 5.39 Yes - some people (new to the village) pass/drive Male 50-59 Clunbury without looking at you or acknowledging?! 5.40 Younger families with kids Female 50-59 Obley

Q8. What is your experience of accessing health and social care services in our area? (e.g. GPs, Hospitals, Chiropodists, Physiotherapists, Health Visitors, Home Carers, etc.) (please state service(s) you are referring to)

Comment Gender Age Location 8.1 Access to GP is generally good Female 70-79 Clunton 8.2 Access to GPs is excellent. My experience of Female 60-69 Clunton RSH is extremely poor, care of some wards is very poor. Follow up not good - cursed by admin. RJ and AH very good service but long waiting time. 8.3 Adequate GP Male 50-59 Kempton 8.4 all good. Male 60-69 Little Brampton 8.5 All services are quite good. Male 60-69 Clunton 8.6 Alright. Male 60-69 Clunbury 8.7 Although only accessed once in 5 yrs, we appear Female 50-59 Clunbury to be very fortunate with our GP services. Have high praise for Bishops CastleHospital having visited people there on many occasions. Still concerned about ambulance attendance times. 8.8 Appointment delays for GP services need Male 60-69 not given improving. Need faster referrals to other services. 8.9 Atrocious!! Am disabled. Had no-one to contact Female 60-69 Twitchen re: my needs. Occ people not trained properly - no contact with council services available for disabled. They should work together. 8.10 BC Surgery has been a bit up and down. Bit Male 40-49 Clunton improving now. 8.11 Clun medical practice very good. Male 50-59 Clunbury 8.12 Clun surgery good - referrals to hospital & Female 60-69 Clunbury physiotherapists too slow. 8.13 Clun surgery is excellent. No problem with Female 80-89 Clunbury /Shrewsbury hospital. Others N/A 8.14 Clun surgery is very good. Male 30-39 Obley 8.15 Craven Arms GP excellent. District Nurses, Female 70-79 Clunton Shrewsbury Hospital excellent. Physiotherapy Coppice poor. 8.16 Craven Arms surgery good access Female 60-69 Clunton

8.17 Deteriorating - particularly access to GP at Male 50-59 Kempton Bishop's Castle. 8.18 Difficult to get doctor's appointments. Female 21-29 Clunton 8.19 Difficulty reaching hospital in Shrewsbury Male 90 and Kempton over 8.20 Difficulty reaching large hospitals at Shrewsbury Female 80-89 Kempton 8.21 Do not have reason to visit them. Male 60-69 Coston 14.35 Excessive rainfall. Male 60-69 Clunbury 14.36 Extreme weather conditions. Water running off Male 50-59 Kempton the fields too quickly. With larger fields being the norm now natural barriers like hedges have been removed. 14.37 Failure to keep water courses clear of Male 60-69 Clunton obstructions. The brook in Clunton was completely blocked by vegetation in 2014. A period of heavy rain would have caused serious flooding 14.38 Failure to keep water courses clear particularly Female 60-69 Clunton the brook in Clunton 14.39 Fallen trees and silting not being cleared or Male 70-79 Brampton cleaned out, it appears that freshwater mussels Bridge have priority over peoples dwellings 14.40 Fallen trees in river Male 40-49 Beambridge 14.41 Fallen trees. Elsewhere drains need to be kept clear. Run off from fields needs controlling. 14.46 Flooding - rubbish (e.g. fallen trees) in river Male 40-49 Clunbury 14.47 Flooding is mostly caused by compaction of flood Male 50-59 Clunbury plains due to agriculture causing faster run off combined with lack of water storage via meanders and softer landscape. 14.48 Heavy rain in 2014 caused huge damage to rivers Female 70-79 Beambridge Clun & Kemp which will take time - given the number of agencies involved - to repair. Streams, ditches & drains get clogged with rubbish - plastic in particular 14.49 Hills Female 60-69 Kempton 14.50 I don't consider flooding to be a problem. Female 40-49 Clunbury 14.51 I don't know. Male 80-89 Clunton Lack of maintenance of riverside trees. 14.86 Obstructions to water way near Shelveswell Male 60-69 Clunbury cottage 14.87 Obviously heavy rain...but the complete fallacy Female 60-69 Clunton that constantly strimming river/brook banks stops flooding! All it does is cause deoxygenation and blockage due to the arisings being left in the water. Very bad for wildlife as well 14.88 On the River Kemp and River Clun. Male 80-89 Llanhowell 14.89 Overgrown trees and silt Female 70-79 Clunton 14.90 Perhaps rather a fatuous response but essentially Male 70-79 Clunton too much water descending from the Welsh hills 14.91 Pool of water on the verge of roads tends to come Male 70-79 Twitchen first from water pouring off sodden fields after periods of heavy rain. Only after this do the streams and rivers affect the roads. 14.92 Poor ditches Female Clunbury 14.93 Poor maintenance of ditches and gullies/culverts. Female 60-69 Cwm 14.94 Possibly more ditches need opening / draining at Female 60-69 Clunton above. 14.95 Probably maintenance of drainage. 14.113 The lack of maintenance to the river and local Male 50-59 Cwm brooks - ie. cleaning out regularly. 14.114 The rivers need to be cleaned out and dredged. Male 40-49 Little The last time they were done was with the Brampton "warag" effort. 14.115 The stream in Clunton has not been fully cleared Male 60-69 Clunton ot 14.116 They are not cleared Male 60-69 Clunbury 14.117 They need "maintaining", clearing of debris, flood Male 50-59 Clunton debris and dredging. 14.118 They need clearing of weed and rubbish on a Female 40-49 Clunton regular basis and occasional dredging. I realise there are conservation issues with this but I feel this should be done when people's homes are at risk. 14.119 This area is hilly, steep & has reivers soof course Female 70-79 Clunton in times it flood. Cure?? 14.120 To many trees & branches in river Male 70-79 Clunbury 14.121 To some extent this is a problem that can't be Female 70-79 Kempton avoided at times. It is possible that removing obstacles in the river bed would help but I don't know. Drainage of fields may also have been a contributor of floods but what can one do about that? 14.122 Too many trees cut down Not replaced 70-79 Beambridge 14.123 Too many trees cut down. Not replaced Female 60-69 Beambridge 14.124 Total lack of maintenance of rivers and streams - Female 50-59 Cwm ie. digging out. It must be so depressing if you live beside, say, Clunton Brook and watch the silt mouting and know you will be flooded as a result.

14.125 Trees that have fallen into the river are then left in Female 30-39 Clunton the river - not cleared away. 14.126 Trees that have fallen into the rivers Female 40-49 Clunbury 14.127 unnatural factors, probably minimal locally, but Male 60-69 Kempton would be over-fast rain run off from arable firelds 14.128 Water flow off Clunbury Hill onto village roads - no Female 60-69 Clunbury pipe diversion of water excess. 14.129 Water from fields having no where to drain to. Female 60-69 Obley 14.130 Water in Clun river coming from the source (?) Female 80-89 Clunbury 14.131 Water table and water coming down from fields Female 50-59 Clunton and hills. 14.132 We (Kempton) live in a river valley where water Male 60-69 Kempton levels rise after heavy rain - this is normal. We enjoy the river and should accept minor and occasional inconvenience. Indeed we should accept higher water levels in some areas as a way of alleviating real flooding issues in downstream communities. 14.133 When the river Kemp rises. Female 60-69 Kempton

Q15. How do you rate the following since 2009?

Better Same Worse Maintenance of rivers 62 (29.3%) 109 (51.4%) 41 (19.3%) and streams Maintenance of 50 (23.0%) 117 (54.0%) 50 (23.0%) drainage ditches Maintenance of road 48 (21.6%) 120 (54.1%) 54 (24.3%) drains/gullies

If any of these are worse, or you have a specific concern, please explain and say where:

15.23 Everywhere Male 60-69 Clunton 15.24 Fallen trees causing banks to fall in and tree Female 70-79 Beambridge blocks river flow - more than a few in last couple of years at Beambridge. 15.25 Fallen trees in the river have a while caused Male 21-29 Beambridge erosion as they have diverted the course. 15.26 Farmers drag mud out of the fields by using their Female 30-39 Clunbury tractors and then do not clean it up which makes it difficult to walk the children to school 15.27 Flooding of road drains on Twitchen road, Female 60-69 Clunbury Beambridge road & Little Brampton road. 15.28 General lack of management. Male 50-59 Clunbury 15.29 General state of lanes is worse with more Male 50-59 Llanbrook potholes. 15.30 Gullies covered/blocked - one by the 3 gates, one Male 50-59 Clunbury on B4368 at Little Brampton! Grit/through blocked up Brampton Bank 15.31 I moved here in November 2014. I had to regularly Female 60-69 Twitchen clear out drains of soil/leaves from opposite my house to stop flooding on the road outside my house this should be done monthly in winter especially. 15.32 I think it's a waste of government money as Female 40-49 Clunbury presumably grants are obtained for the work and then the work is not maintained - ref. all planting / fencing by river. River will continue to flood. 15.33 In Clunton 70-79 Clunton 15.34 Lots of Alder trees down in river and not being Male 50-59 Beambridge replaced - so banks erode. 15.35 Many, many potholes!!! 15.44 People who move to the country should appreciate Female 60-69 Clunton that flood plains are just that, and that brooks are natural and do not need to be converted into suburban water features. Clunton brook has been effectively 'vandalized' north of the b4368. The Parish Council turned a blind eye at the time. 15.45 Period Jan to March 2014 awful, floods regularly, Male 50-59 Beambridge no visible proactive work donel 15.46 pot holes. Female Clunbury 15.47 Purslow cross roads, Clunton Coppice Lane. Female 70-79 Clunton Coppice 15.48 Regular flooding of Gunridge Lane, above no. 3 Female 70-79 Clunton and outside no. 3 15.49 Regular flooding of Gunridge Lane. Male 70-79 Clunton 15.50 River clearance only on certain stretches. More Male 50-59 Clunbury needed. Roadside gulleys blocked 15.51 River Clun between Shelveswell and Ford Female 80-89 Clunbury Cottages has encroached upon what was a field and maybe a problem to the road in the future. 15.52 Rivers /Streams & Drainage Ditches - Don't know. Female 60-69 Llanbrook 15.53 Road down from Bury Ditches, gully and drains Male 50-59 Clunton block. Stream overflows onto road by Gunridge. 15.54 Road from Llanbrook Fingerpost to Llanhowell Male 50-59 Obley very bad pot holes. 15.55 Roads are a shambles. Too many people riding Male 40-49 Little about instead of doing something! Fill in potholes Brampton in the summer, don't wait for November and the rain. Basics Darling! 15.56 Run-off down Redwood Lane, Twitchen causes Female 50-59 The Llan excessive water which drains can't cope with - lack of regular clearance. 15.57 Some areas along Walcot Avenue still flood after Female 60-69 Walcot excess rain. 15.58 Spread of Himalayan Balsam - possible creation of Male 60-69 Clunton corridor by measures to conserve pearl mussels 15.59 Standing water on Kempton Lane not getting to the Male 60-69 Kempton river. 15.60 The Council team are amazing at regular Female 50-59 Cwm maintenance. The Environment Agency takes the same view here as on the Somerset levels. 15.61 The evidence is clear to see locally. Highways Male 60-69 Clunbury Agency fail to inspect or maintain. 15.62 The Kemp was straightened many years ago. Male 60-69 Kempton Evidence of the old meandering course is very evident in many places. The creative response would be to revive the old water course thereby holding up the water and safeguarding the wider downstream community. It would make for a wonderful wildlife resource. 15.63 The road from Clunton to Bury Ditches, the gullies Female 40-49 Clunton are continually blocked. There are no drainage ditches. Also the main Clun Road- I'm not sure that the gullies are regularly emptied.

15.64 The stream flowing northwards towards the River Male 70-79 Clunton Clun, via Gunridge in Clunton. The sediment beneath the bridge is never touched, and removal of excess sediment stops a few yards from the bridge. An almost pointless exercise if remaining length of stream is untouched and the confluence with the R. Clun is at the same level 15.65 There has been a lot of erosion on the river banks Female 21-29 Clunbury going through various fields in Clunbury. Also on the Little Brampton road, road edges are being worn away and need replacing. 15.66 There is little or no evidence along the Clun Valley. Male 50-59 Clunton Landowners are doing their best but SCC need to do more. 15.67 Too many fertilisers running off into the river & Female 50-59 Clunbury polluting it from farms all the way up the Clun. 15.68 Traffic on B4385 over runs verges and blocks Male 60-69 Twitchen drains with mud. This causes "ponding" and risks flooding road. 15.69 Very few roadside ditches now dug out anywhere. Female 50-59 Clunbury 15.70 Water run off from hills often cause road surface Female 60-69 Cwm erosion, especially in narrow lanes at Cwm, Llan and Clunton Coppice. 15.71 Who's responsibility is it to maintain rivers and Female 50-59 Kempton keep them running free?

These additional comments were added by respondents outside of the comment box provided. 15a Crossed out ‘Better’ and replaced it with ‘Good’. (All ticked as Good) 15b (1st tick box) - Don't know if any maintenance happens on the Kemp 15c Unknown

Q19b. What aspects of Clunbury Parish do you most dislike?

Comment Gender Age Location 19b.1 1) Industrialisation of the countryside - or at least Male 60-69 Kempton the threat thereof as exemplified by the current planning application at Walcot Farm. 2) Intensive agriculture 3) Pollution of waterways by agricultural run-off from middens, livestock feeding sites, and potentially at least from arable fields. 4) Aerial pollution - nitrogen deposition from livestock farming which is more intensive than the environment can handle. 19b.2 1. Inconsiderate neighbours who allow dogs to Female 50-59 Kempton mess and who carry about their activities with little regard or thought for others. Thankfully there aren't too many of these (at present). 2. Speeding traffic along the B Roads. 19b.3 Car parking facilities at V. Hall Male 40-49 Beambridge 19b.4 Council Houses by Village Hall. Female 60-69 Twitchen 19b.5 Damage from heavy or oversize vehicles Male 70-79 Beambridge 19b.6 Different villages in the parish have different Male 70-79 Clunton problems. ( eg. speeding traffic in Clunton) . The CC has made little impact on these problems. 19b.7 Dog fouling Telegraph poles & wires everywhere Female 50-59 Clunbury & electric pylons & cables 19b.8 Dog fouling. Sometimes loose dogs. Female 70-79 Kempton 19b.9 Dog poo Female 60-69 Clunton 19b.10 Dog poo. Male 50-59 Clunton 19b.11 Drivers on small roads need to be aware of Female 70-79 Clunton walkers etc. Speeding 19b.12 Due to width of modern agricultural machinery Male 60-69 Clunbury wheels of vehicles often overrun tarmac on road dragging mud from verges into road (Twitchen Rd.). Could verges be cut back making road slightly wider? 19b.13 Effluent leaking onto B4368 between Quarry and Female 40-49 Clunton Purslow. Byway between Bush Farm and Clunton Coppice needs clearing, unable to walk through due to poor drainage. 19b.14 Effluent leaking onto the highway from the Male 50-59 Clunton quarry between Clunton and Purslow. I dislike that you cannot walk down the byway from Bush Farm to Clunton Coppice due to poor drainage. 19b.15 Families transposed from urban / city Female 60-69 Clunbury upbringings to village communities due to social housing. They do not integrate and cause ill feeling by their loud behavious, despite local efforts to help their integration. They find it difficult to adapt and become self sufficient.

19b.16 Fast traffic through the village despite 30mph Female 70-79 Clunton singn 19b.17 Haven't found any yet! Female 50-59 Clunton

19b.18 Having lived here for almost 30 years there is Female 80-89 Clunbury nothing I dislike about the parish. 19b.19 I don't dislike anything Male 50-59 Clunbury 19b.20 I like it all Male 18-20 Clunbury 19b.21 I loathe the fact that we have council houses in Female 40-49 Clunbury Clunbury but the people that are in them are people that were not from the local area which is not fair on local people & also one house '3 Bed' has one person living in it. Where's the sense!!!! Also fox hunting - I thought it was banned. 19b.22 Inconsiderate visitors Male 50-59 Clunton 19b.23 Intolerance of newcomers and young people and Female 60-69 Cwm their needs and the requirements of local farmers. Lack of understanding that new younger people will be needed to keep Clunbury Parish a vibrant and good place to live, to prevent it becoming a "Saga-Themepark"!

19b.24 It seems artificial in terms of its boundaries. At Female 60-69 Llanbrook Llanbrook we are technically in Clunbury, but relate to a wider geographical area in real life. 19b.25 It would be sad if we sleep walk into forgetting Female 50-59 Cwm this is a working and rural parish with a need for young people to keep us going. 19b.26 Its isolation. Male 50-59 Clunbury 19b.27 Lack of bus service. Female 60-69 Kempton 19b.28 Lack of consideration shown by drivers, school Male 50-59 Clunbury run etc. Parking and [can't read word]. 19b.29 Lack of contact with councillors. Female 60-69 Kempton 19b.30 Lack of facilities and things for young people to Male 40-49 Clunton do. 19b.31 Lack of fast Broadband for Twitchen! It is unfair Female 60-69 Twitchen that there is a Broadband box at Purslow but BT will not connect to Twitchen. 19b.32 Lack of housing for local people. Similar to Male 80-89 Llanhowell those in Clunbury Village. Villages full of retired people. Young people with children would be of benefit to the school. 19b.33 Lack of local services Male 60-69 Kempton 19b.34 Lack of public transport Female 60-69 Little Brampton 19b.35 Lack of public transport Female 50-59 Clunton 19b.36 Lack of public transport for those who do not Female 60-69 Clunbury drive and don't have funding for local taxis. 19b.37 Lack of social amenities Cost of living (council Male 50-59 Beambridge tax, petrol, shop prices) 19b.38 Lack of time to participate in all activities due to Female 50-59 Beambridge work commitments 19b.39 Lack of transport Female 80-89 Clunbury

19b.40 Litter. Lack of public transport accessible for Female 60-69 Clunbury someone in Clunbury who may wish to work in Craven Arms but can't drive - although this doesn't affect me I know someone who is prevented from living there because of that problem 19b.41 Local housing given over to non-local families Male 60-69 Clunbury causing disruption to a village community (foul language, litter, loud music, vehicle noise, rats). Some of these properties are adjacent to mine. 19b.42 Mobile phone signal poor Road Sign Clutter Female 60-69 Kempton 19b.43 More things for local children to do Female 21-29 Clunbury 19b.44 Needs more activities for children to do Female 30-39 Clunbury 19b.45 Newcomer that you pull over for in a car and Male 60-69 Little they are too miserable to thank you!! Male 70-79 Clunton 19b.66 Not a lot. As I'm getting older I'm wondering what Female 60-69 Clunbury will happen when I can't drive anymore. I would probably have to move to an area where I could walk to shop, doctors etc. 19b.67 Not many things going on. 19b.73 People driving too fast and not being considerate Female 50-59 Kempton to speed limits - quite aggressive driving. Constant dog barking late at night and early morning in Kempton - this just goes on and on for long periods of time. The small paddock adjacent to our property is an eyesore the owner does not live in the parish. The paddock once belonged to our garden - we would like to return it to a respectful garden. We nearly managed to purchase it but the owner back out at the last moment - we would like to buy it and cure the eyesore once and for all 19b.74 people trying to modernise us all the time - Male 70-79 Kempton bringing in more people with lots of cars. 19b.75 People who do not understand that the Male 50-59 Cwm countryside is a working environment that constantly evolves. 19b.76 Politics Female 40-49 Clunbury 19b.77 Poor ambulance, police, since they have been Female 70-79 Clunton cut. A recent need for an ambulance 999 call Coppice required an ambulance from Shrewsbury and a wait of 40 minutes. 19b.78 Poor dog care & management practices in Male 60-69 Clunton Clunton leading to unreasonable noise & concern for dogs left alone & outside for too long - each dog has different & individual needs 19b.79 Public transport appears to be non existent, and Female 50-59 Between it is vital to have a car to get around - would love Beambridge to have a reliable & possibly twice weekly bus & Clunbury service going through Beambridge & Clunbury village 19b.80 Roads, pot holes, mud, speeding traffic. Male 70-79 Clunton 19b.81 Socially unbalanced population. Female 60-69 Clunton 19b.82 Some of the people don't think enough Male 50-59 Clunbury community spirit Not enough going on for the younger members of the village 19b.83 Speeding Drivers, Litter and Dog mess. Male 60-69 Kempton 19b.84 Speeding in narrow lanes Female 60-69 Obley 19b.85 Speeding traffic Dog mess Male 50-59 Clunbury 19b.86 Still exploring. Male 50-59 Kempton 19b.87 Tendency to ignore the conservation area Female 70-79 Clunbury requirements 19b.88 Terrible broadband and mobile phone. Bad for Female 50-59 Clunton local business, people who work from home. Affects property prices 19b.89 That the older generation & younger don't mix Female 40-49 Clunbury enough. Would like to see more interesting things done for the younger generation. Some people in our parish should not live here as they cause trouble

19b.90 The amount of traffic that is allowed to hurtle Male 70-79 Twitchen through Twitchen with no enforcement of the statutory speed limit, with speed of 60mph plus and most wagons straddling the white line. Not only a threat to adults, but to the children ten of which who are a few months up to 11 years old. 19b.91 The busy road outside our cottage and wish Female 60-69 Walcot there was something put in place to slow traffic down. (Walcot Avenue - Lydbury North and by dairy farm entrance. Barking dogs at gamekeepers cottage. 19b.92 The fact that heavy goods vehicles are now Female 60-69 Twitchen directed down the B4385 Purslow-H. Heath making the Twitchen area very dangerous for its inhabitants. 19b.93 The fact that too many lorries use the B4385 Female 60-69 Twitchen road instead of using the 'A' roads. Also, all traffic travels much too fast, a better system is needed to force vehicles to adhere to the speed limit. 19b.94 The fact we don't have a play park for smaller Female 60-69 Clunbury children 19b.95 The increasing suburbanization of the area Female 60-69 Clunton 19b.96 The inevitable slight tension between the original Male 70-79 Clunton inhabitants and the new The fact that at least one in every two vehicles travels through Clunton well in excess of the 30mph speed limit and that there are never any checks on this 19b.97 The lack of activity focused on the young people Female 60-69 Clunbury who live in our community. Most of the activities at the Village Hall target those of us who are older 19b.98 The lack of enforceable speed limits. Male 50-59 Kempton Uncontrolled dog barking (the sound carries a long way!). Too many crows. The constant mowing, hedge cutting, strimming that takes place all the time - I know people have to tend their gardens but surely I have the right not to have to listen to it all day!

19b.99 The noise of local wood work shop and bonfires Female 60-69 Beambridge Wood burning stoves The smokes 19b.100 The noise of local woodwork shop and bonfires 70-79 Beambridge Woodburning stoves the smoke 19b.101 The Roads in! Forigeners not been able to do Male 30-39 The Llan wot I bin brought up bin doin my freedom 19b.102 The speed of some drivers through the village. Female 50-59 Clunbury 19b.103 The use of HGVs using the roads which are Male 60-69 Twitchen totally unsuitable for them. The speeding of cars using the same roads. 19b.104 The water tastes disgusting! Female 70-79 Beambridge 19b.105 The weather - sometimes! Male 70-79 Beambridge

19b.106 There is nowhere in this document for general Male 60-69 Clunton comments The telephone box in Clunton is a disgrace - either clean it and paint or remove it 19b.107 Threat of new houses Female 70-79 Clunton 19b.108 Too many moaners. Get a life, every day's a Male 40-49 Little gift. Brampton 19b.109 Too quiet. People won't join in bellringing. Male 60-69 Clunton 19b.110 Traffic speeds making all exits (from Kempton Female 70-79 Kempton village) dangerous 19b.111 Traffic too fast. People who come here wanting Male 60-69 Clunbury to change us - for spurious reasons. Leave us alone! 19b.112 trouble makers Male 80-89 Clunbury 19b.113 Unacceptably slow broad band even though the Male 60-69 Twitchen Little Brampton exchange has been "up graded". Seems unfair that BT have been allowed to cherry pick where they will allow fast connection. Feeble mobile phone signal. 19b.114 Very difficult to get work men to come round. Male 50-59 Twitchen 19b.115 Very little. Male 50-59 Clunbury 19b.116 Very poor internet connection/speed Poor mobile Male 50-59 Clunton phone signal Useless public transport 19b.117 Very poor services as rural areas do not have Male 60-69 not given the population to be "economically viable" in the eyes of service providers. This applies to mobile phones, Internet, ambulance etc etc. How are rural communities to compete and develop if there is under investment in services of all types.

Q20. Would you support commercial development of any of the following?

Yes No Don’t know Wind farms 59 (22.6%) 145 (55.6%) 57 (21.8%) Solar Farms 74 (28.2%) 125 (47.7%) 63 (24.1%) Biomass units 45 (17.6%) 130 (51.0%) 80 (31.4%)

Comment Gender Age Location 20.1 A bin for recycling, rather than the boxes (eg. on Female Clunbury the colour blue) 20.2 A biomass unit would be brilliant. Female 50-59 Clunbury 20.3 Absolutely not. Male 70-79 Kempton 20.4 All of the so called "green" alternatives for power Male 50-59 Kempton come at a cost to the countryside. The example of the ill judged application for a "community" "sustainable" power unit should be seen as a warning. 'Bio-mass' power can be heavily polluting.

20.5 Alternative energy is important but this requires Male 50-59 Clunbury more discussion not a tick box

20.6 Any green energy, providing it was small scale and Female 60-69 Llanbrook truly environmentally sensitive. 20.7 Any large scale development by outsiders who Female 50-59 Coston have no genuine interest in our countryside and anything that defaces it. 20.8 Biomass not on a commercial level - no crops for Female 50-59 Beambridge fuel 20.9 Communal rather than commercial ? Female 30-39 Clunton 20.21 Individual solar panels on domestic dwellings and Female 50-59 Beambridge village halls 20.22 Lives develop, businesses develop, families Female 50-59 Twitchen develop all sorts of developments should be judged on their individual merit not by a plan done without anything in mind. This could be quite a dangerous tool if used incorrectly and I am quite worried about it, generally not necessarily just for the above. Our young people need to be able to build the type of house they want not just what is deemed to be affordable by other people most of whom may already own their own with not any extra strings attached. The same goes for businesses including farms just look at the development in the previous 100 years!!! Wind farms are not as productive as they make out.

20.29 Very much depends on scale, siting and type of Female 21-29 Obley development - each application must be judged on its own merits. 20.30 We need all the land we can get to feed the world, Male 40-49 Little not grow 'crops' for electricity production so people Brampton can leave lights on 'coz they're too lazy to turn them off, let alone the wasted heat in hospitals, schools, offices etc. 20.31 Wind Farms - no use and ugly Solar Farms - a few Male 60-69 Kempton panels on the roof of south-facing houses are a good idea and I support this practice. Biomass Units - they require an awful lot of timber, and need a rail head to bring it in 20.32 Would largely depend on scale and environmental Male 60-69 Llanbrook sensitivity. In general in favour of small scale renewable schemes. 20.33 Would need details before commenting! Female 60-69 Clunton 20.34 Would support co-operative development of all of Male 60-69 Clunton the above

Q21. Would you support any small scale community-led development that would offer cheaper energy for local homes? (For example, recent government green policies have included 50% grants to finance small-scale sustainable electricity networks using wood fuelled boilers/units capable of providing cheaper energy to rural communities).

Yes No Don’t know 124 (47.3%) 43 (16.4%) 95 (36.3%)

No comment box provided but these comments were added by respondents. 21a Would need more information Yes - although I do not think we would benefit as we are tucked away from the 21b village, a single dwelling 21c Yes - but unlikely we would benefit 21d Not sustainable 21e (Ticked Don't Know) Depends if such schemes are really practical 21f (Ticked Yes) - but does the parish have enough trees to sustain a woodburner? 21g Would end up burning waste

Q23. HGVs and SatNavs There were 94 comments made in the 2009 Survey regarding problems caused by HGV vehicles and SatNav systems. Since the Plan was published, Shropshire Council have worked with SatNav companies to remove known errors from systems and more signage has been introduced at strategic points.

Do you think that problems of HGVs using unsuitable roads in the parish are better or worse than in 2009? (When answering, please think about general use of roads by HGVs and not during diversions or road works)

Better Worse No change 87 (38.1%) 38 (16.7%) 103 (45.2%)

Q24. Transport

If you use the bus services, are they adequate for your needs?

Yes No 24 (33.8%) 47 (66.2%)

Comment Gender Age Location 24.1 A daily service would be good Female 60-69 Kempton 24.2 As an occasional user of Male 60-69 Llanbrook "pensioner bus pass" could substitute public transport for car mileage more if extended to rail use and to use of both services in Wales. 24.3 At the moment no problems, as Female 60-69 Clunbury we have a car but future might be different! 24.4 Bank in Craven Arms Female 60-69 Clunbury 24.5 Bus only stops on main Clun Female 50-59 Between Beambridge road, rather far for most of us to & Clunbury walk home to Beambridge with bags of shopping etc 24.6 Bus service is non-existant. Q25. It may not be possible to achieve a better bus service in the area, but if you do not currently use the bus service, what level of service would encourage you to use it?

Prompt provided in questionaire No. of responses More frequent service 66 Different day (e.g. to link with market days in towns) 23 Different time of day (e.g. earlier/later to get to/from work) 20 Same-Day Return Service 54 Better links to other services (e.g. train or bus timetables from Craven Arms) 64 I am unlikely to use a local bus service in the foreseeable future 129

Other (please give details below) :

Comment Gender Age Location 25.1 A huge number of students (6th Form) from the Female 50-59 The Llan locality take the train from Craven Arms to Shrewsbury or Hereford. We did contact Minsterly travel who were helpful trying to direct us to help our guest get about. 25.10 To the best of my knowledge we don't have a bus Male 70-79 Twitchen service to use! 25.11 unlikely to use except in times of high water levels Male 60-69 Kempton or heavy snow.

HOUSING AND DEVELOPMENT

Currently, parishes like ours have a choice of opting to have a designation of ‘CLUSTER’ or ‘COUNTRYSIDE’ attached to the Parish to guide the Planning Department on what development they should allow. Your Parish Council is charged with making that decision and, at the moment, the Parish Council have designated Clunbury Parish as ‘Countryside’, taking into account the feelings of a meeting held in early 2014, together with the results of the 2009 Parish Plan Questionnaire.

‘COUNTRYSIDE’ allows:  Affordable keyworker dwellings to house agricultural, forestry or other essential countryside  workers  Other affordable housing/accommodation which demonstrates it meets a local need, including the conversion of rural buildings;  Listed rural buildings or historic (unlisted) rural buildings of an appropriate character and  significance can also be converted to open market housing, subject to certain conditions regarding design, needs and sustainability

‘CLUSTER’ allows:  The three types of development in the ‘Countryside’ designation (as above)  Plus, some open market housing development potentially by a developer or housing association.

With changes to Housing and Planning Policy constantly coming from Central Government and Shropshire Council, it would be helpful to the Parish Council to know how you think the Parish should be designated in the future.

Q28. Please state your preference by ticking one box.

About small scale offices, small scale developments of this type often brings other jobs to the area and are often located in redundant buildings. 28.2 Affordable and social housing for young families Male 60-69 Clunton 28.3 Affordable Homes Male 50-59 Kempton 28.4 Affordable houses Female 70-79 Clunton 28.5 Affordable housing for rent. Social Housing. Female 60-69 Walcot 28.6 Affordable housing for the young people. Male 70-79 Twitchen 28.7 Affordable housing for young people Male 60-69 Clunbury 28.8 Affordable housing is a must for rural communities Male 50-59 Beambridge and should continue 28.9 Affordable housing to buy and rent. Female 40-49 Obley township/ Llanbrook 28.10 Affordable housing to rent. Female 70-79 Clunton Coppice

28.11 Affordable. Rents are high for private lets and not Female 60-69 Kempton many Council Houses 28.12 Any housing development for affordable housing Female 60-69 Clunbury would need a play area for the children as there is nowhere public for them at the moment 28.13 Brown field sites first. Male 50-59 Clunton 28.14 Cheaper housing which implies that more housing Female 60-69 Obley needs to be built, mixed between affordable housing and more expensive housing. 28.15 Development should be kept to a minimum - once Female 50-59 Kempton building gets in it tends to grow. There are properties and buildings that could be renovated within the parish rather than build new dwellings in this area of beauty. It should remain unspoilt 28.16 Do not think houses should be on outskirts of Female 50-59 Clunbury villages - should be infill only Small affordable starter homes - not part buy part rent as once in this type of home it is hard to get out into outright buying because you don't get much back when you sell on 28.17 Don't know Male 60-69 Clunbury 28.18 Don't know all the complications. Male 50-59 Kempton 28.19 Even if jobs in industry or commerce were to be Male Clunbury created in the Parish, most workers would still probably commute in from nearby towns where housing is relatively affordable. 28.20 First defeat NIMBY. ( You'll be lucky !) Male 70-79 Clunton 28.21 Houses for young people near to local school. Male 70-79 Purslow 28.22 Housing development must not be in isolation. Job Female 70-79 Obley opportunities very important. 28.23 Housing for young local people Male 50-59 Kempton 28.24 housing/accommodation that demonstrates that it Male 60-69 Kempton meets a local need, including conversions. 28.25 I do not think these [Countryside/Cluster] should Female 21-29 Obley be the only options. I do not think that the only "local need" is affordable housing. Young local people should also be allowed not to be restricted by affordable status and all new build homes if they live in that house for a long period of time. 28.26 I think conversion of existing barns would be Female 50-59 Clunbury acceptable. I wouldn't like to see new development. 28.27 I would support some "Cluster" development for Female 60-69 Llanbrook Housing Associations. 28.28 If Clunbury Parish is not 'Countryside', what is?? Male 50-59 Kempton 28.29 If housing development is confined to a strictly Female 60-69 Llanbrook countryside approach then I think the demographic profile of the parish will continue to drift upwards. 28.30 If more houses are built they are not allocated to 70-79 Clunton LOCAL young people. 28.31 If you choose Countryside it will be harder to get Female 50-59 Beambridge any form of development. Affordable housing will be 'one offs'

28.32 Individual new homes should be allowed within Male 60-69 not given "Countryside", within planning criteria. The previous 2 miles from a "centre" such as Clun was too restrictive. This is very different from "developments" of multiple units either by a different developer or a housing association. 28.33 Itsno good building houses for families unless you Female 70-79 Clunton have good transport facilities 28.34 Keep the big developers out of the area, there not Female 50-59 Coston interested in holding local communities together by building affordable houses. Smaller dwellings in local vernacular styles are what's needed. 28.35 Low cost housing for younger local people. Male 21-29 Clunton 28.36 More affordable housing for younger people. Female 21-29 Clunbury 28.37 More affordable housing particularly for the young Male 50-59 Cwm so they don't have to move to Bishops Castle, Craven Arms or further afield. Those places will quickly become their community and the parish will lose their input and energy. 28.38 More affordable housing rent/buy. Male 50-59 Obley 28.39 More houses for local people Male 50-59 Clunbury 28.40 Need to ensure the younger generations are Female 21-29 Twitchen encouraged to stay in the area. Need not just affordable housing, also need to encourage us to take on mortgages knowing we've got a future here and not governed by loads of restrictions. Should be analysed on case by case basis. 28.41 No further development is needed in the parish. Female 60-69 Twitchen 28.42 No more local housing. Our local housing has Male 60-69 Clunbury been given over to families from distant towns and they have caused social problems in the village at the same time not benefiting themselves. 28.43 None - too many people already Male 70-79 Kempton 28.44 None. Male 60-69 Twitchen 28.45 None. There is enough traffic coming in at school Female 50-59 Clunbury times. 28.46 Not necessarily Cluster only on merit but the Female 50-59 Twitchen 'affordable' tag is unhelpful to our youngsters who would like to be able to build/ow their own house without all these future restrictions but the two boxes above do not allow this to be expressed - when the youngsters commit to their life long mortgage they need the confidence that the home they are investing in is going to be given the same opportunities as other people's homes in the same area - why are we restricting our young people - they are our future!! 28.47 Not too much more eh! When I moved here I Female 60-69 Clunbury received a letter stating that this area is A.O.N.B. and as such there were strict rules about tree removal, building, noise etc. I love that. It's the peace and quiet and the fact that it is off the beaten track that keeps Clunbury (and Clunton, Clungunford & Clun) so special and some people choose that.

28.48 Parish needs controlled development of affordable Female 60-69 Cwm housing, starter homes and social housing for rent. The predominance of older, retired people moving into the area has adversely affected the housing market making homes unaffordable for locals and young couples. 28.49 Perhaps some work/life developments so that Female 60-69 Clunbury people can combine their work and family life under one roof. Some adapted dwellings for disabled people might be a good idea too. Family housing with large gardens for children & potential for growing fruit & vegetables 28.50 Permit larger developments - "affordable" homes Male 50-59 Twitchen are too small. 28.51 Please consider using brown sites before the Male 21-29 Beambridge countryside 28.52 Rural housing for young people and families is a Male 60-69 Kempton well known problem. I agree that it needs a solution - eg Council Housing with no "Right to Buy" 28.53 Scope for SOME well-planned development to Male 70-79 Clunton help sustain the local services we still retain. 28.54 Selective and in-keeping development Male 30-39 Clunton 28.55 Since there are very few agricultural workers or Male 80-89 Llanhowell forestry workers in the area this doesn't apply. 28.56 Small developments of For Sale or Housing Female 60-69 Little Association homes should be reserved for people Brampton with local connections, not used as overspill from cities 28.57 Smaller settlements such as Twitchen, Kempton, Female 70-79 Clunton Clunton Coppice could have a possibility of small Coppice development, similar to the 'infill' allowances in small urban settlements. Perhaps a relaxation of the total embargo on planning applications on areas outside the designated development boundary. 28.58 Stop assuming we need more homes. Who for? Male 60-69 Clunbury The area will not die just because there aren't lots of young families. This is a beautiful place and it should be kept the same otherwise we will be just like anywhere else. People move here because of the way it is. Lots of families with children and cars won't make the place better - they generally don't contribute anything. All of the volunteering around here is done by people who care about the countryside they live in and are older. There are no local jobs for more people so why build houses for them? There are no indications that local people are being forced out or can't find homes. 28.59 The keyworker concept is outdated. Most Male 60-69 Clunbury agricultural planning permissions are given for farmers themselves not farm workers 28.60 The Parish does not have the infrastructure for Female 60-69 Clunton housing development: sewerage 28.61 The Parish needs to avoid any development . Male 50-59 Kempton Once you allow any development it becomes impossible to stop it

Return to contents page 75 Clunbury Parish Plan Review 2015 - Supplementary Information (Issue 2)

28.62 There is no clear evidence of a need for more Female 50-59 Kempton housing. There are plenty of small homes for rent that are not let. Any calls for more houses for young families needs to be carefully considered - are they really required? Young people/families don't necessarily want to live here. Additional housing is best supplied in areas where infrastructure can cope and where there are suitable facilities. This IS the countryside and should stay as such. It won't die - it is vibrant enough. 28.63 To keep a balanced community age-wise we need Female 50-59 Cwm affordable housing. In-filling in villages or brownfield sites being developed would all help to keep our school, church and village hall going. Open market development in our Parish would never be vast as the infrastructure would not cope - but they might stem the flow of young people to Craven Arms and B.C. 28.64 To many towneys Already Dont need Any more Male 30-39 The Llan Leve us Alone. 28.65 We need housing to support a more diverse Male 50-59 Clunbury community, for key workers and low income families, especially for young people to stay in rural areas. Also interested to see more self build sites. 28.66 Why develop? People come here from 'off' to get Female 60-69 Clunton away from development. Development can be had nearby in Craven Arms, and the conurbations are only 3/4hr drive away! 28.67 Why do we need to add social housing to rural life Female 60-69 Clunbury when there is no local employment. Young people have to travel miles for employment. Keep social housing in larger towns e.g. Craven Arms, Ludlow, Knighton. 28.68 You are right in selecting the Countryside option. Male 60-69 Coston Experience here and elsewhere demonstrates that most builders \ developers are only interested in big houses to maximise their profit margin. They have little or no interest in creating affordable housing for the local younger generation. 28.69 You missed out son's and daughter's that are born Male 50-59 Obley in the countryside and would like to live in the countryside (self build)

Q29. Do you think the Parish needs more small scale offices/workshops?

Yes No Don’t know 57 (21.6%) 82 (31.1%) 125 (47.3%)

No comment box provided but these comments were added by respondents. 29a It is no point in building/spending & then expecting ‘x’ amount of people to create a business exactly the right size & type for the property you have just created with no structure in mind let alone be at the right stage of that same business to afford the premises created! But if the parishioners feel they do why not just deal with it then when they apply on an individual basis – why the need to say here as if people want to create offices/workshops they will have a need for them when they do 29b (Ticked Don't Know)- Possibly Yes, if there is a need

COMMUNICATION & BUSINESS Traditional methods of communication were improved after the last Parish Plan in 2009 with the introduction of the Parish Post and new notice boards. Therefore, with the advance of technology over the last five years, this questionnaire focuses on electronic communications. The roll out of BT Superfast Broadband has occurred in limited parts of the Parish but has left other areas with slow or no access to the internet. Given this position may not change in the foreseeable future the aim of these questions is to identify the need or demand for additional methods of electronic communication.

Q30. How do you rate the following?

The Parish Post / Website One of the key outcomes from the 2009 Parish Plan was the creation and publication of The Parish Post newsletter. This was as a direct result of feedback from the previous questionnaire regarding communication in the parish.

The Parish Post is delivered to every house in the parish, either in paper or electronic form, eleven times a year, produced by a small band of willing volunteers.

Q34. Do you find the Parish Post useful?

Comments not in a comment box and not related to an individual question

a Every day outside my house I scoop dog mess, clear litter and cut the verges and grass when required. If a lot of people would have a little civic pride I would not be scooping dog poo up as well as litter b There are no questions regarding nursery or school provision. c Good initiative, well done to those involved, but apart from one question about trees and hedges there was nothing about how to maintain, & hence the visual qualities & nature conservation value of our parish. Also virtually nothing on climate change which is looming over us and is being effectively ignored by national and local government. Disaster is on the way d Fox hunting is allowed on and around Clunbury Hill X amount of times a year. On the last occasion the hounds were all over the Beambridge road CHASING a fox and then digging a hole under our garden fence & jumping over it, scaring our own dog to death, but on this particular day our daughter wasn't at school as she was poorly - she heard all the commotion outside, saw the hounds in our garden chasing said fox. Upset her dreadfully, had nightmares for a couple of nights....Fox hunting banned - I think not!
