Ernesto dOrsi, President of the Brazilian Bridge Federation The surrounding hills and the beckoning waters of the Atlantic Ocean formed the backdrop for yester- day's opening ceremony as play got under way in the eighth World Youth Team Championships. After a speech of welcome by the President of the Brazilian Bridge Federation, Ernesto d'Orsi,the Championships were formally opened by Panos Gerentopoulos, Chairman of the World Bridge Federation Youth Committee. The growing strength of Zone 6 has been confirmed by the performance of Thailand who recorded two maximums yesterday to race to the top of the table.They are pursued by two of the favourites,Israel and The Netherlands,and the leaders will have a chance to show the seriousness of their challenge today,as they face both those teams,along with fourth placed USA I. If they are still at the top of the tree after what promises to be a tough day,we will know that the leaders are real contenders for the title. 8th WORLD YOUTH BRIDGE TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP Mangaratiba, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil RESULTS OF ROUND 1 RESULTS OF ROUND 2 IMPs VPs IMPs VPs 1 CANADA bye 18 - 0 1 DENMARK CANADA 42 - 47 14 - 16 2 CHINA DENMARK 25 - 57 7 - 20.5 2 NEW ZEALAND CHINA 17 - 61 6 - 24 3 NORWAY NEW ZEALAND 68 - 36 19 - 8 3 FRANCE NORWAY 20 - 35 12 - 18 4 EGYPT FRANCE 55 - 48 16 - 12 4 USA II EGYPT 45 - 28 19 - 11 5 USA I USA II 29 - 17 17 - 13 5 CHINESE TAIPEI USA I 19 - 98 2 - 25 6 NETHERLANDS CHINESE TAIPEI 90 - 31 24 - 4 6 ARGENTINA NETHERLANDS 44 - 61 11 - 19 7 ISRAEL ARGENTINA 61 - 30 21 - 9 7 CAC ISRAEL 12 -100 0 - 25 8 BRAZIL CAC 59 - 55 15.5- 14 8 THAILAND BRAZIL 66 - 9 25 - 4 9 AUSTRALIA THAILAND 40 - 92 5 - 25 9 bye AUSTRALIA 18 - 0 TOMORROWS PROGRAM ROUND 3 ROUND 4 1 CANADA NEW ZEALAND 1 FRANCE CANADA 2 CHINA FRANCE 2 USA II CHINA 3 NORWAY USA II 3 CHINESE TAIPEI NORWAY 4 EGYPT CHINESE TAIPEI 4 ARGENTINA EGYPT 5 USA I ARGENTINA 5 CAC USA I 6 NETHERLANDS CAC 6 THAILAND NETHERLANDS 7 ISRAEL THAILAND 7 AUSTRALIA ISRAEL 8 BRAZIL AUSTRALIA 8 bye BRAZIL 9 DENMARK bye 9 DENMARK NEW ZEALAND ROUND 5 RANKING 1 CANADA USA II AFTER 2 ROUNDS 2 CHINA CHINESE TAIPEI 1 THAILAND . 50 3 NORWAY ARGENTINA 4 EGYPT CAC 2 ISRAEL . 46 5 USA I THAILAND 3 NETHERLANDS . 43 6 NETHERLANDS AUSTRALIA 4 USA 1 . 42 7 ISRAEL BRAZIL 5 NORWAY . 37 8 FRANCE DENMARK 6 DENMARK . 34.5 9 NEW ZEALAND bye 7 CANADA . 34 8 USA 2 . 32 Convention Card 9 CHINA . 31 Penalties 10 EGYPT . 27 11 FRANCE . 24 The following penalties have been imposed for late de- livery of convention cards: 12 AUSTRALIA . 23 Brazil 0.5 13 ARGENTINA . 20 Norway 3.0 14 BRAZIL . 19.5 The Netherlands 1.0 15 CAC . 14 France 2.0 Denmark 1.5 NEW ZEALAND . 14 China 1.0 17 CHINESE TAIPEI . 6 2 6-15 August 2001 8th WORLD YOUTH BRIDGE TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP Warming Up Postcard to Brazil n many major sports the competitors engage in a warm up.
