“A Sturdy Core of Thinking, Fact Seeking Citizens”: The Open Forum Movement and Public Learning in Terre Haute and Hammond, Indiana, in the 1920s Arthur S. Meyers” In Sinclair Lewis’s fictional Zenith, Ohio, in 1920, George Babbitt complained to his wife that their daughter and her beau were “trudging off to lectures by authors and Hindu philosophers and Swedish lieutenants.” Lewis was describing an actual phenomenon taking place in several hundred industrial cities, including at least four in Indiana. The Open Forum lecture movement was remarkable: a locally planned, non-partisan, non-sectarian initiative in public learning, reaching thousands of people around the country. Expanding beyond the Chautauqua lecture movement in topics and locale, it brought a wide range of people together to discuss the vital concerns and intellectual advances of the day and to consider the core beliefs and values in their lives.’ Although the Open Forum has faded from history, it was a model of social commitment, public learning, and freedom of speech that took root not only in metropolitan areas but also in small cities in the Midwest. The story of the movement in Terre Haute and Hammond in the 1920s provides fresh insight into Indiana’s history, revealing a previously unknown interest in the ideas of liberal reformers and support for public learning, and documenting the social activism of a minister and rabbi. It also suggests that other smaller urban communities of the Midwest were less provincial and more politically varied than most accounts of the era suggest. The Open Forum is best understood in both religious and political terms. -

Stillman Th e goal of the Encyclopedia of Jews in the Islamic World is to cover an area of Jewish history, religion, and culture which until now has lacked its own cohesive/discreet reference work. Th e Encyclopedia aims to fi ll the gap in academic reference literature on the Jews of Muslims lands particularly in the late medieval, early modern and modern periods. Th e Encyclopedia is planned as a four-volume bound edition containing approximately 2,750 entries and 1.5 million words. Entries will be organized alphabetically by lemma title (headword) for general ease of access and cross-referenced where appropriate. The Complex Relationship between Jews and African Americans in the Context of the Civil Rights Movement Abstract The Civil Rights Movement occurred throughout a substantial portion of the twentieth century, dedicated to fighting for equal rights for African Americans through various forms of activism. The movement had a profound impact on a number of different communities in the United States and around the world as demonstrated by the continued international attention marked by recent iterations of the Black Lives Matter and ‘Never Again’ movements. One community that had a complex reaction to the movement, played a major role within it, and was impacted by it was the American Jewish community. The African American community and the Jewish community were bonded by a similar exclusion from mainstream American society and a historic empathetic connection that would carry on into the mid-20th century; however, beginning in the late 1960s, the partnership between the groups eventually faced challenges and began to dissolve, only to resurface again in the twenty-first century. -

Undergraduate Prize Announcement: The Leo Baeck Institute-NY Essay Prize in German-Jewish History and Culture The Elie Wiesel Center for Jewish Studies at Boston University in conjunction with the Leo Baeck Institute (New York) is pleased to announce the 2020 submission guidelines for the annual Leo Baeck Institute-NY Undergraduate Essay Prize. The award is aimed at stimulating interest in the history and culture of German Jewry among undergraduates enrolled at North American colleges and universities. Jewish history and culture in German-speaking countries dates back to Roman times, when Jews settled along the Rhine. In the Middle Ages, Jewish traders helped connect German villages with the wider world, while towns like Mainz, Speyer, and Worms became centers of Jewish learning in Europe. When medieval German Jews migrated to the East and established thriving communities in Polish, Ukrainian, and Russian lands, they took their Germanic dialect with them, creating the Yiddish vernacular as the hallmark of Ashkenasic culture. Jews were present at the diet of Worms, when Luther defended his ninety-five theses before Emperor Charles V. Later, the Berlin Enlightenment included the Jewish thinker Moses Mendelssohn, hailed as the “German Socrates,” and mixed salons heralded a new age of social mobility and cultural renewal. Over the following 150 years, German-speaking Jews would not only make key contributions to philosophy and psychoanalysis, politics and art, science and technology, and business and education, but also launch a religious renewal that would culminate in the various strands of reform, conservative, and neo-orthodoxy we recognize in North America today. Despite the formal emancipation of the Jews, however, a new and unforgiving form of Jew-hatred evolved that would soon destroy the German-Jewish community. -
