Abstract

The genus Susuacanga Martins, 1997 is redescribed. A new combination, S. blancaneaui (Bates, 1880) comb. nov. and a new synonymy, Eburia unicolor Bates, 1870 = S. octoguttata (Germar, 1821) are proposed. The genus is now composed of 12 species. The geographical distribution of S. opaca is expanded to include Belize. Photographs of Susuacanga species are included and a key to differentiate them is provided.

Introduction

The genus Susuacanga was described by Martins (1997) for three South American species of Eburia Lacordaire, 1830, and characterised by the presence of a tubercle between the upper ocular lobes, by having three transverse gular sulcus and by the dense pronotal punctuation. Martins mentioned the possibility that some other Eburia species, from North and Central America, could be also Susuacanga. Noguera (2002) revised the Eburia species from North and Central America but did not recognize Susuacanga as well as other genera described by Martins (1997) as valid. Noguera (2002) mentioned that if the validity of Susuacanga was confirmed, some species should be transferred from Eburia: E. falli Linsley, 1940; E. hatsueae Chemsak & Giesbert, 1986; E. opaca Chemsak & Linsley, 1973; E. patruelis Bates, 1884; E. poricollis Chemsak & Linsley, 1973; E. rotundipennis Bates, 1884; E. stigmatica Chevrolat, 1834; E. ulkei Bland, 1862; and E. wappesi Noguera, 2002. Recently (Tavakilian, 2013), these species were formally transferred to the genus Susuacanga. In this work, Susuacanga is redescribed, a new combination and new synonymy are proposed, and a key to species is provided. All described species are illustrated.
