  • Percy Grainger and New Worlds of Concert Pianism
Percy Grainger and New Worlds of Concert Pianism: A Study of Repertoire and Programming (1914-1926) Natalie Stephanie Bellio Dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Music (By Research) October 2013 Melbourne Conservatorium of Music The University of Melbourne Produced on archival quality paper Abstract This thesis presents an overview of Percy Grainger’s piano repertoire and programming on his tours in the United States and elsewhere in the period 1914-1926. In the United States, Percy Grainger encountered a new and wider audience, which gave him the recognition he desired to become well established as a concert pianist, and allowed him the freedom to explore a wider range of piano repertoire, as well as perform his own piano works. He developed an individual approach to programming his piano recitals and committed himself to a role as ambassador for the piano works of selected modern composers throughout America, Scandinavia and Australia. This thesis briefly explores Grainger’s performing career in London from 1901 to 1914, to provide background on Grainger’s roles as a pianist, the diversity of the piano repertoire he performed, and the restrictive circumstances surrounding his early career whilst under the management of his mother Rose. Through new research conducted on concert programmes and other relevant archival material available at the Grainger Museum, this thesis examines Grainger’s transformation as a pianist, the evolution of his selection of piano repertoire and his innovative and maturing approach to recital programming in the United States from 1914 to 1926. In addition, this study explores Grainger’s developing professional role as an educator and promoter of his preferred piano repertoire in the United States.

Stations. (2) The words "Outside Broadcast" or "O.B." refer to a broadcast outside the B.B.C. studios, not necessarily out -of- doors; e.g. a concert in the Queen's Hall or the commentary on the Derby are equally outside broadcasts. (3) The B.B.C. organisation consists, roughly speaking, of a Head Office and five provincial Regions- Midland Region, North Region, Scottish Region, West Region, and Belfast. The Head Office includes the administration of a sixth Region - the London Region-which supplies the National programme as well as the London Regional programme.

The Complete EMI Audio Tape Guide By David Winter Version of 23 FEBRUARY 2014 This list contains all known EMI (His Master’s Voice and Columbia) tapes released between 1952 and the early 1960s. Any new version will contain minor fixes or updates, or unreleased titles. If you wish to contribute, please email me at [email protected] with good quality pictures showing what should be updated or added. Thank you. Change log: - New format, hopefully for better reading. Tape catalog prefixes, tape types and misc details: EMI issued their "tape records" under two brands: His Master's Voice (HMV) and Columbia (COL). They were all recorded in 2 channel format, either in mono (twin sided) or stereo (Stereosonic, single sided). They are always 7-inch reels playing at 7.5ips (or 19 centimeters per second). Only a few recordings have been made available both in mono and stereo. However, many titles have been recorded in either format by different performers. Some titles were eventually imported in America by RCA when the company was licenced to produce the equivalent LPs. The table below shows the four catalog codes used for each type of tape and by each brand. Later 4-track stereo tapes and 2-track "Twin Packs" are not included in this list. This guide is based on EMI's catalog of 1958 and may be missing titles released shortly after. • Decca Discography
DECCA DISCOGRAPHY >>2 GREAT BRITAIN: ffrr, 1944-57 In a business where exclusive contracts were the norm, it was very difficult for a newcomer to become established and Decca’s initial roster of classical artists was unable to compete with established rivals. In March 1932 an agreement with Polydor provided access to a substantial catalogue of German artists and a year later the company virtually abandoned classical recording to concentrate on dance bands. The move to Thames Street Studios provided more scope for orchestral sessions and a bold policy of recording contemporary British music enhanced the label’s reputation. The newly formed Boyd Neel Orchestra was signed up in 1934, followed by the Griller String Quartet in 1935, Clifford Curzon in 1937, Peter Pears in 1944, Kathleen Ferrier in 1946 and Julius Katchen in 1947. War broke the link with Polydor, leaving Decca with a respectable catalogue of chamber music, but little symphonic repertoire. Armed with ffrr technology, the company began to remedy this in 1944, engaging Sidney Beer’s National Symphony Orchestra until 1947 and the misleadingly named New Symphony Orchestra (it had made its first recordings in 1909) from 1948. Neither developed into a house band to rival EMI’s Philharmonia and, with the Royal Philharmonic also exclusive to EMI, Decca had to resort to the LSO and the LPO, both in rather run-down condition in the post-war years. Meanwhile every opportunity was taken to impress visiting continental orchestras with ffrr sessions and it was evident that the company intended to transfer much of its symphonic work to Paris, Amsterdam, Geneva and Vienna as soon as practicable.
