In 1738 the Scotch-Irish and some others in WOl'cester bought 14137 acr~s ofland for 28 6d per acre: which they named New Lisburn. The mime was ehanged to Pelham by act of General Court in 1743. John Ha:nilton was a proprietor in Pelham but io Shutesbury he hail no rights in the undivided proprietot?s lands; he owned only the farm he bought. The farms belonging to the Hamiltons are in the south east corner of Shutesburv, with Presl::ott on the east of Shutesbury and Pelham. The' old buryil1g ground is in Pres cott, very near Pelham, and here 2Johu Hamilton and his wife are buried. I visited these graves and copied thefollow- ' ing: "John Hamilton, born May 21, 1716. Died Feb. 25, 1798." On his gravestone is written "The sweet remembranceoftbejust Shall flourish when they sleep in dllst."

H Mary Hamilton, born May18, 1717. Died June 10,1799." On her gravestone the words.-:.. •. Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord." From what I have seen written, I think this 2John Ham ilton has been taken for anotherJohn, but that' he is the an cestor ofthe families recorded here, there can be no mistake. The old family bible ofthe Hamiltons ~s ~till_preseryed 8.I1d. is now in the possession ofa cousin ofmine in SyracUse, N. Y. A fewweeks ago this record was copi(~d from the old bible and sent to me, and is wordfor word just what I had copied from the old gravestones. 2JOHN HAMILTON, born May 21, 1716, married Mary Lockhart, or Lockhard, born May 18,1'717. Their children were sJ ames; 8 Margaret,8Frances,SPatrick,8John, 8Rebecca, 3Andrew, 80bodiah, 8David, 3Martha. The date of birth ofthese children is probably that which each has preserved in their respective family. Of some of these children wehave nothing ofdates,consequently cannot know the order in which these names should stand. The nearest we can approximate to this is learned byconsidering the ages of the children in their several f:amilies. For many years I have been seeking in vain for satisfac": tory information concerning the parents of 2John Hamilton. 'Were I to give the statements that have been furnished me I must say that they left two or three countries at the same .time to come to America. I hope somebody, somewhere, has the correct record, but I regret very much I cannot give it. There has been so many John Hamiltons, and some of them conspicuous characters, that it is very easy to make a mis V111. PREFACE. take in the individual, but I will gh:'e one statement as it was written out and sent me: "John Hamilton, wife a.nd da. ughter, Eleanor, of the Parish of Ardstraw, in Ireland, in or about 1727~ who brought letters testimonial oftheir being communicants in . Ireland, were received into the fellowship of the church at Rutland, Mass., and before 1740 withdrew from that con gregation and with others organized the Presbyterian .church in Rutland. see 'Reed~s History of Rutland.' They removed to Pelham about 1742, as his name appears on the records there in 1743, and there he died and is buried, his gravestone saying-John Hamilton,died Feb. 15,1798,inhis. 82d :year." Consequently he must have been born 1716 or '17.· Surely we have no such precocious youths among the Hamiltons ofthe present day! . That writer gives the remaining dates showing that he copied from the same.gravestones that I did. The trouble here is that he refers to two Johns instead of one. Indeed, these writings, 1ike the price of liberty, require "eternal vigilance." I am sometimes reminded of the boy who asked "If one was born on the ocean \vhat country he belonged to," and was told" the same country that the parents belonged to;" he replied "that he was born on the ocean but he was trayel ing \vith his aunt." Pf the father of the Hamilton family who came to Amer ica in 1716, this one item has come to me in letter from H. C. Hamilton, Springfield, Mass.: "It is said in the obituary of Warren Hamilton, at Ann Arbor, Mich., that he descend ed from Dr. John Hamilton, Church of the Barony, Glas gow, Scotland." This is all that I have been able to learn, though several letters have been sent to the family of War ren Hamilton, but no response has been given. *The child ren of this first family, 2Lemuel (1), 2Adam (2), 2John (3), 2Thomas (4), 2Michael (5), 2Frances (6). 2John Hamilton (No, 3), born May 21, 1716, of him and his descendants the records are given in Part First of tbis book. .

It is said that now, 1894, there is not the name Aber crombie. Conkey or Hamilton, in Pelham, though some of their descendants remain there. I remember the day she moved into my father's house, though I was less than three years old; re· member the blackvelvetwork bag she carried, thus showing my early as well as my later love for whatever my fancy called pretty. 4Clara Crossett (364), born July 2, 1795; married Dr. Secretary Rawson. Had 'one daughter 5Harriet -(419). Their home was in Prescott or near New Salem, Mass.; both parents died while this child was very young. After a few years she went to her aunt's, in Pennsylvania, where she married Dr. Alonzo Firman in Findley, Ohio. She died there May -, 1891. No family. I remember her visits to her grandmother, Martha. Crossett, in Shutesbury. Mass.; re member her as a lov€"ly child, and she is spoken ofas a lovely woman. Her husband still living, in 1893, aged 86 years.
