BAREBOAT CHARTER – WELCOME ABOARD!!

Thank you for choosing to charter with VOYAGE charters. We look forward to meeting you and sharing with you the delights of the beautiful British – sailing, snorkeling, diving, eating and relaxing aboard our luxury catamarans. If you have not chartered a yacht in the before, the following suggestions may help you plan for your trip:

 Getting There - Most major commercial airlines fly into , (EIS) or into St. Thomas (STT). From St. Thomas, you must take a ferry to Tortola and arrive at the West End ferry port. For information on ferry schedules, please visit the BVI Welcome website: www.bviwelcome.com/ferries.html. If you are interested in a private water taxi, please contact Dohm’s Water Taxi, 340-775-6501 or Dolphin Water Taxi, 340-774- 2628, located in Red Hook St. Thomas, USVI. We highly recommend pre-arranging your transportation.

 Emergency Contact Information – International cell phones are provided to guests upon check-in for emergency use only. Unfortunately contact numbers are not available prior to your charter to give to your family members. However, we have found that the majority of cell phones do work in the BVIs. Call your cell phone carrier and have them authorize “international” calling. As a backup, you can always give them the BVI base’s phone number. It is available 7 days a week – 8am to 5:30pm. 1-284-494-0740

 Travel light - you won’t need much! Like the lifestyle, clothing in the BVI is casual. Bring as many changes of swimwear as you can and a few pairs of shorts and T-shirts. It is a good idea to pack one light-weight sweater and a pair of long pants as it can be cool on the water at night.

 Pack your things in duffel bags or soft-sided luggage as these can be easily stored onboard. Hard-sided suitcases and “roller suitcases” do not fit in the cabinets and will take up valuable space in your cabin.

 Always carry a swim suit, change of clothes, and any vital medications in your carry-on luggage. This way, if your luggage is delayed, you will be able to enjoy your vacation while the airline traces it. You may also wish to label your luggage with the VOYAGE charters BVI address:

Voyage Charters BVI Sopers Hole Marina Frenchman’s Cay, West End Tortola, British Virgin Islands

Please do not ship packages/luggage in advance of your charter. The base staff cannot accept responsibility of any personal belongings and do not have storage facilities for pre-shipped items.

 All VOYAGE Bareboat charters start at NOON and end at 10:00 a.m. You will be able to board your yacht at NOON. If you are scheduled for a sleep-aboard, you may board your yacht beginning at 5:00pm. If you are arriving after 5:30pm, proceed to the VOYAGE charters Marina office located in Sopers Hole. A mailbox by the front door will have an envelope with your name on it. Inside will be the location of your yacht and a welcome note, onboard you will find shower tokens and a user’s guide for lights, stove and heads. The refrigerator and freezer will be on and A/C running if your yacht offers this amenity. The marina office opens at 8am in the morning and your briefing and check out will begin at 9.30am.

 We provide PFDs (life jackets) for all guests onboard our yachts, however, if you have small children, we recommend that you bring custom fit PFDs (life jackets) with you to ensure a guaranteed fit. Also, we provide snorkel equipment and fins in various sizes onboard our yachts. We highly recommend that if your young children wish to snorkel from the boat, that you bring snorkel equipment that fits them properly to ensure a good experience.

 For those of you who plan on scuba diving, fishing or have water toys delivered to your yacht, we recommend the following suppliers (please ask them to deliver after you have boarded your yacht):

 Island Surf and Sail offer an excellent assortment of water sport equipment and rentals. For those of you who put things off to the last minute, they are a great resource with quality equipment. They also offer fishing gear rental and will process your fishing permits and deliver to your boat with advance notice. Check out their website www.bviwatertoys.com for further details.  Blue Water Divers provides diving equipment rental, resort courses and rendezvous diving. Go to www.bluewaterdiversbvi.com for details.  Renport provides most electrical supplies, such as laptop rentals for your charter. Please check out their website at www.renport.com.

 For trips ashore and the rare occasion when you might want to wear shoes, a good pair of deck shoes is recommended. Beach shoes, such as ‘Teva’s, are a must for this vacation as you will need footwear that can get wet and filled with sand.

 The sun in the British Virgin Islands is fierce and commands respect. Sunscreens are a must. Please do not pack suntan oils as they turn the boat decks into skating rinks. We also prefer “PABA free” lotions as PABA will stain fiberglass. A good pair of sun glasses is essential as are a couple of hats.

 The water temperature in the BVI is usually between 75-80 degrees which can feel surprisingly cool after an hour or two so if you own a light wetsuit or exposure suit, please bring it along. Shortie wetsuits can also be rented from local dive operators. ______

 Provisioning - We recommend that you do your provisioning online with Rite Way several weeks prior to your departure. They have a great website where you can order online and have your provisions delivered at no additional cost directly to your yacht. Please make sure your provisions are delivered AFTER you arrive, the base does not have facilities to store them before your scheduled boarding time. Check http://www.rtwbvi.com/ for details.

 Our boat briefings generally last 1 ½ – 2 hours. It is imperative that this briefing is extensive and thorough in order we impart the correct information to the skipper prior to his or her departure from our base. We recommend both the skipper and first mate attend the boat briefing.

9:30am (for Sleep-Aboard Clients only) 1:00pm 3:30pm

If you arrive after 3:30pm and are scheduled for a NOON start, the next briefing will be at 9:30am the following morning.

 In order to prepare for your boat briefing at the base, we recommend you view our online briefing at www.voyagecharters.org

 Onboard each yacht is one set of charts and the guide “Cruising Guide to the Virgin Islands” by Nancy & Simon Scott. Another popular guide is Virgin Anchorages by Nancy & Simon Scott.

 Night sailing in the BVI is not permitted. You should plan to be at anchor or moored prior to sunset.

BAREBOAT CHARTER – Sample Itinerary

DAY 1

Board your yacht at midday at Sopers Hole Marina on the West End of Tortola - the original home of the pirates. After a light lunch, a 2 hour sail takes you to . Hook a mooring ball in the Bight and take a short dinghy ride into the Pirates Bight Bar and Restaurant for a cool drink and appetizers. Let the kids play on the white sandy beach to cool off or take a chance at the “ring toss”. Gather the group to snorkel at the underwater caves and be amazed at how many fish there are in the crystal clear waters. It’s a snorkeler’s paradise. End the evening with a visit to “Willy T”, (the William Thornton) and dance the evening away.

Did you know - Legends play a leading role in the history of Norman Island. In the early 1700s, it is told that a mutinous crew from a Spanish Galleon buried 55 chests of silver coins on Norman Island. Most of this treasure was later recovered by local residents from Tortola and the British authorities. Inevitably, more buried treasure is rumored to still exist on the Island today. More famously, Norman Island is the backdrop that inspired author Robert Louis Stephenson’s epic tale “Treasure Island”.

DAY 2

After a leisurely breakfast, set your sails for Deadman Bay, internationally acclaimed as one of the most beautiful beaches in the . Drop anchor, go to shore and explore. Take a walk on the trail over to White Bay or just laze around in the beach chairs provided for guests. Next, hop in your dinghy and take a short ride to explore Dead Chest Island. Later, make your way over to Great Harbor and hook a mooring ball for the night. Enjoy a nice dinner aboard or go ashore and sample the fare available at the local restaurant, Callaloo at the Beach.

Did you know - is one of the largest private islands in the British Virgin Islands. History claims that in the early 17th century, Pieter Adriensen and Joost Van Dyk built a fort with slave pens in Great Harbor for privateering while assisting in the slave trade from Angola. Dead Chest Island is the site where they believe Blackbeard marooned 15 mutinous crewmen leaving them with only a sword and cask of rum – spawning the well known pirate ditty “Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rum.”

DAY 3

Take a short sail to Salt Island to dive or snorkel the Wreck of the Rhone; then motor around to Cooper Island. Grab a mooring ball in Manchioneel Bay for lunch and do some spectacular snorkeling off Cistern point. This sheltered reef is alive with juvenile fish of endless varieties. Alternatively, take a stroll on the beach, sit under a palm tree and just soak in the beauty of the turquoise waters.

Did you know - The British iron steamship, R.M.S. Rhone, sank in 1867, during one of the worst hurricanes ever to hit the BVI’s. She first tried to anchor in the protection of Peter Island’s Great Harbour Bay, but the Captain decided to abandon a 3,000 pound anchor and 300 ft of chain in a bold attempt to reach open waters. The 310 ft long Rhone crashed upon the rocks of nearby Salt Island. The ships boilers exploded breaking the ship into two parts – the bow section and the stern. The Wreck of the Rhone is a world-renowned scuba diving site and is well known as the backdrop for the adventure movie “The Deep”.

DAY 4

A morning sail can take you to the “Dogs” to visit one of the most popular dive sites in all of the BVI… the Chimney. This dive site is located on the westernmost point of Great Dog. Make a picnic lunch and take it to the small beach on the southeast side of Kitchen Pt. on George Dog. Bring along your snorkeling gear for a great snorkel along the rock walls. The area is teeming with fish and colorful coral. Then set off for an invigorating sail up the west side of , one of the most beautiful of the Virgin Islands. Plan to spend the night on a mooring ball or reserve dock space at Leverick Bay and enjoy a fun filled family night of great food and entertainment with a beach BBQ and be entertained by Michael Beans.

Did you know - In 1990, during a failed take off, an old Air BVI aircraft (company now defunct) crashed 200 yards off the end of the runway (fortunately no one was hurt). The plane was retrieved and kept in a hangar for some time before it would be dismantled for scrap. The local BVI dive operators were able to persuade the owners to donate the fuselage to them to use as a new dive site. It was sunk in about 50 feet of water on the south side of George Dog Island. Although the plane no longer has its wings, the emergency oxygen masks remain hanging from the roof.

DAY 5

Spend the morning enjoying the North Sound - truly one of the most outstanding natural harbors in the Caribbean. Head over to and visit the museum filled with historical artifacts found throughout the area over the years. See the secondary anchor and a canon from the Wreck of the Rhone. After a morning of shopping and sightseeing, make your way to the infamous Baths, where you will experience the magical ambience of the legendary granite boulders. Bring your camera!!! Make your way through the maze of boulders to the beautiful Devil’s Bay Beach. Take a cool swim or don your snorkel gear in the crystal clear pools in search of the many colorful underwater species. Before returning, hike the trail to the top of the Baths for an ice cream at the Mad Dog restaurant. There are some great shops along the way to find that perfect souvenir. Set sail to for an evening of entertainment ashore. Or elect for a quiet night with cocktails on the trampoline gazing into the starry sky.

Did you know - The Baths were formed during the creation of the islands 70 to 100 million years ago, when volcanoes thrust up from the seabed. Geologists say the granite boulders are the product of molten rock that seeped up into the existing volcanic rock but never reached the surface. Instead, the molten rock cooled slowly, thus forming a hard crystalline rock layer. Eventually, the softer volcanic covering eroded, exposing the granite blocks. Weathering rounded the gigantic stones into the huge pebbles we see today.

DAY 6

Take the picturesque cut through the Camino Passage to Monkey Point for a morning snorkel. The snorkeling is excellent along both sides of the rock walls. The coral reefs house a colorful section of local fish. Find a spot to sit near the rocks and watch the Pelicans dive for fish. The show is quite spectacular. Take an exhilarating sail on the north side of Tortola. Make your way to in Manchioneel Bay on . Visit Foxy’s Taboo for a Bushwacker and then take a short hike to the natural whirlpool formation in the rocks.

Did you know - , located on the ocean side of Tortola through the Camanoe Passage from Trellis Bay, is a nature resort on a completely private island. The entire island is a wildlife sanctuary with one of the richest collections of plant and animal species in the Caribbean. Many tropical bird species can be observed including Brown Boobys. There is a breeding colony of Brown Pelicans that can be found nesting along the rocky coasts and cliffs of Guana Island. Ashore, there is a salt pond where many more birds can be spotted. Roseate Flamingos have been known to inhabit the island as well.

DAY 7

Sandy Spit and are two places of exceptional beauty. Take your pick and drop anchor for a few hours. Great Harbor is ideal for those who would like to visit the famous Foxy’s Tamarind Bar. Sample his “Sly Fox” or “Dread Fox” cocktail they are both made from Foxy’s firewater rum and listen to his calypso songs. Beware you’ll probably end up in one of them! For an overnight stop, White Bay is secluded and quiet with only the Soggy Dollar Bar ashore. As there is no dock to secure your dinghy, patrons will put their “dollars” in their swim suits, jump overboard and swim to shore. Try a delicious flying fish sandwich and enjoy the original “Pain Killer” rum cocktail. Make sure you take a shot or two at the ring-toss game. It’s a lot of fun, but not as easy as it looks.

Did you know - The country music video for Kenny Chesney’s 2002 recording “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems” was filmed on and around Jost Van Dyke. Included in the video were several scenes shot at Ivan’s Stress-Free Bar where it is common practice for patrons to walk behind the bar, mix their own drinks, and leave their payment in the register. Chesney also references Jost Van Dyke in his song “Somewhere in the Sun” from his album “Be as You Are (Songs from an Old Blue Chair)”.

DAY 8

The last morning! Enjoy an early morning swim or snorkel before sailing back to the West End for some last minute shopping in Sopers Hole before joining your homeward flight.

Did you know - It’s time to book your next charter with VOYAGE charters. We offer an immediate repeat discount! Give us a call when you return so that we can assist you with your next vacation in Natures Little Secret!

VOYAGE charters – Transportation Options

The British Virgin Islands lie east of the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico and West of St. Thomas in the northern portion of the West Indies chain. The lack of any direct flight is a blessing in disguise. The island terrain does not allow enough land to build a full-sized runway; therefore, flights are strictly limited to small commercial and private planes. While this does curtail the tourist economy, it also secures the location as a safe haven for sailors and divers for years to come. The physical development and human encroachment have been contained within the two larger islands of Tortola and Virgin Gorda, leaving the rest to a natural existence.

VOYAGE charters BVI base - WEST END Soper's Hole, on the West End of Tortola, is where the island's first Dutch settlers landed in 1648. This sheltered harbor is a major anchorage and port of entry. The West End ferry terminal is located here, as well as customs and immigration facilities. Across the harbor, connected by bridge is Frenchman's Cay. VOYAGE charters BVI base is located in Soper’s Hole Marina, West End.

BY AIR - It is a 25 minute flight by commuter plane from San Juan, Puerto Rico to Tortola in the BVI (EIS). While they are not the only airline serving the BVIs, American Eagle is the island's main and most reliable carrier. These flights run throughout the day from San Juan. Your flight will actually arrive on Beef Island, a small island outcropping off the north point of the big island of Tortola. The airport is connected to the main island of Tortola by a short bridge. Make sure you pre-book your taxi transfers to the VOYAGE charters base through JP Transport.

BY FERRY - Alternately, you may fly to St. Thomas (STT) and take a 40 minute ferry ride. Please check the BVI Welcome website for departure times www.bviwelcome.com. The ferry departs Charlotte Amalie - St. Thomas (15 minutes from St. Thomas Airport) for West End and Road Town BVI. You may also take Dohm’s Water Taxi between STT and the BVI’s, (340) 775-6501 or Dolphin Water Taxi, (340) 774-2628.
