Alfas at VSCCA Fall Finale nniversaries are meant to be celebrated. Alfa Romeo was having a big one – 110 years old - but 2020 gave us a nasty slap in the face with COVID 19, A and events were canceled across the country. Things eased up a bit in the Fall, when Lime Rock Park held its Historics races without spectators. Then finally the Vintage Sports Car Club of America (VSCCA) had the last hurrah of the season with their October 2 Fall Finale at LRP, and celebrated Alfa Romeo! Friday morning saw a damp track, but it didn’t keep the faithful from getting out and circulating. Saturday featured an all-Alfa race, and I mean ALL Alfas - everything from Peter Greenfield’s 1933 Alfa Monza to Todd Hill’s postwar 1965 Giulietta Ti, with a collection of Spiders and Sprints rounding out the field. So it was one solitary prewar machine doing battle with 20 postwar racers. Deb Abraham in her 1958 Alfa Giulietta Spider took the battle to Peter in the Monza and had a race-long dice of epic proportions, a 4-cylinder normally-aspirated car with 1958 technology against an 87-year-old 8- cylinder supercharged beast. The other Alfas having their

own duels created a backdrop for the dice of the weekend if not the year, by two great drivers who wrung everything out of their cars, putting on a memorable show. In the end, “there’s no replacement for displacement” and Peter and the Monza eked out the win, with honor and sportsmanship. The Alfas did what they were built to do, make glorious noise, race on a beautiful track, and add to the fall colors. Adapted from an article by Pete Vack in Veloce Today. Photos by Sean Smith.
