Occasionally a band finds a way to combine elements of various genres that would not seem likely to work together and create something beautiful. In this case, Dance Gavin Dance has done exactly that and executed in a way that seems almost effortless. Founded by vocalist/bassist Jan‐Chris De Koeijer and guitarist Frank Harthoorn in 1989, GOREFEST released their debut album 'Mindloss' in 1991 after they attracted quite some attention in the extreme Metal underground. Signing to Nuclear Blast in 1992 the band issued several legendary albums that quickly gained cult status and showed the band from a far more technical and sophisticated side. 'Chapter 13', GOREFEST's swan song, was released in 1998 and it continued with the band's interest in classic rock. However, just before the end of the year, the band announced its breakup.

'Rise To Ruin' was GOREFEST's 7th studio album. Many people were surprised of the harshness of the comeback album 'La Muerte' two years earlier. It was a great album, stuffed with elements from everything that GOREFEST have ever done. You could say the same about 'Rise To Ruin' but this time the Dutch institution is taking it even further. Faster, harder, louder!

In today's music scene, originality doesn't always seem to be the leading force. In fact, some might argue that many of the most successful current bands are simply breathing new life into the aesthetics of decades past. So when a band surfaces defying easy classification, their existence becomes a noteworthy matter. Brooklyn, New York's UnWed are just such a band.

Although their members have made names for themselves for nearly 20 years in other musical endeavors, UnWed reaches far beyond anything in their combined history. Instead, the band bring their punk and indie roots to the table, amalgamating these influences with more traditionally heavy rock elements to create their unique sound. Add to the mix vocals provided by their powerful female singer and the overall result is undeniably interesting.

Following the release of their debut EP via No Idea Records, UnWed set out to write and record their first proper full length. The quintet teamed with an accomplished group of engineers, including Paul Leavitt, Ryan Jones, Brian McTernan, Will Beasley, and Travis Bacon, each with considerable resumes of their own. The end result, entitled "Raise The Kids," captures a band bridging the gaps between hard rock, anthemic punk, and alternative with splendid precision.

Tim Berne s third ECM album, You’ve Been Watching Me, sees the saxophonist-composer again leading his ultra-dynamic New York band Snakeoil, but with the quartet now a quintet with the arrival of guitarist Ryan Ferreira, whose sound adds textural allure. The group’s 2013 release, Shadow Man, garnered Berne some of the highest praise of his career as a composer and bandleader, with Jazz Times marveling over how his work grows wilder and deeper. The four-star Down Beat review said: This music rocks and thinks, explores, deconstructs and, yes, it swings, in its own identifiably angular, Berne-ian way. Just as Berne has hit a new peak with his writing on You ve Been Watching Me, his band has reached a heightened state of collective interaction, realizing the compositions to a tee. Snakeoil with the leader on alto sax alongside pianist Matt Mitchell, clarinetist Oscar Noriega, percussionist Ches Smith and Ferreira on electric and acoustic guitars can still be bracingly kinetic. But there is new space in these compositions and more lyrical focus to the improvisations, leading to a dramatic, even cinematic experience in such tracks as Embraceable Me. The music evokes a sense of transcendence and mysterious journey from the opening “Flying Over the Odra Valley” that spotlights Lukács's cosmic hammered delivery as well as the leader’s tenor saxophone brio, to the lyricism and dynamics of the epic “Wild Man Dance” finale where all the band members gracefully and gleefully converse.
