Billie Holiday, born Eleanora Fagan, and nicknamed “Lady Day’ by legendary saxophonist Lester Young, influenced singers, jazz and otherwise, for generations and continues to do so today. Her voice is instantly recognizable and one can feel the emotion in every phrase, note and inflection. The last decade of her life was tumultuous to say the least, with alcohol and drugs beginning to take their inevitable toll, and with relationships that were turning sour. To these ears the pain just added more poignancy to her singing. God Bless the Child was written by Holiday after an argument with her mother; it was to become her best ‐selling song and the one covered most often.
