Often only a core group of “well-known” reptile researchers were in communication. The rest of the biologists did their own research in isolation. This, of course, did lead to duplication of work, non-standard methodologies, ambiguity in knowledge, non-accessibility to exotic references, etc. The effects of this situation were obvious at the Conservation Assessment and Management Plan workshop (CAMP) for Reptiles in May 1997. At the workshop, albeit the exercise lead to the assessment of close to 500 taxa of Indian reptiles, a sense of unease was felt by the participants. Many isolated studies on reptiles could not be compared for want of comparable field methodologies, the veracity of the information provided was questioned of an unknown or nervous researcher and the ubiquitous feeling of “if we had all known each other better, we could have come up with more information” were reasons for the group recommending that a network of reptile researchers be formed immediately. -

Husbandry Guidelines for Veiled Chameleon Chamaeleo calyptratus (Reptilia: Chamaeleonidae) DUMÉRIL & DUMÉRIL 1851 Date By From Version 2015 Stuart Daniel WSI Richmond v 1 OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY RISKS This species, veiled chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratus), is classed as an innocuous animal and poses minimal to no risk to keepers. The veiled chameleon is a small, generally non-aggressive species which possesses no anatomical features that could cause any harm. Though it is common for individuals of this species to be reluctant toward handling, any action performed to avoid being handled is generally for display only and will not result in any physical aggression. Individuals that feel threatened will put on a threat display which involves an open mouth and extension of the throat pouch (see figure). On the odd occasion an individual may bite but it is very rare that this will break the skin or cause any discomfort at all. Working with any animal species poses a risk of zoonotic disease. Common zoonotic diseases are listed in the table below, as well as other potential hazards that may be present in the work environment. INDIA: WESTERN GHATS AND NILGIRI ENDEMICS SET DEPARTURE TRIP REPORT 12 – 25 JANUARY 2020 By Dylan Vasapolli Malabar Trogon was one of the trip’s main targets and showed well on a number of occasions. www.birdingecotours.com [email protected] 2 | TRIP REPORT India - South: January 2020 Overview This two-week set-departure tour takes in the best of southern Indian birding and gives one access to nearly all of the Western Ghats endemics. Beginning in Bangalore the tour gradually moves southward, first to Mysore and the excellent Mudumalai area, and, following some time here, to the high-elevation town of Ooty, where a number of prized endemics await in the Nilgiri Mountains. Continuing on our southward trajectory we move across the Palghat Gap into the Anaimalai Hills to the south, which have their own suite of endemics, and we focus our time on birding around Topslip, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, and the town of Munnar. The tour then progresses to the Kerala coast, where our remaining days are spent birding arguably the best birding area in southern India, Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, before the tour comes to an end in Kochi. The Critically Endangered (IUCN) White-rumped Vulture is perhaps best sought in southern India. This tour would see a small group joining, with only two participants, Danny and Ira. The tour went smoothly, with little interruptions from the weather; however, the Pongal festival did prevent us from gaining entry into several areas, although fortunately in the end this didn’t cost us any particular bird species. The birding was extremely successful, and we did very well throughout the tour, finding almost all of the possible Western Ghats endemics and our targets generally, as evidenced by our commendable trip list, totaling over 270 species. -

Pictured here is Short-legged Ground-Roller. www.tropicalbirding.com +1-409-515-9110 [email protected] Tropical Birding Trip Report MADAGASCAR, NOVEMBER 2018 This year’s Tropical Birding Madagascar Set-Departure tour was another resounding success. For the folks that joined both extensions, we explored far-flung corners of the 8th continent, from the Spiny Forest in the Southeast, to the mangroves of the Northwest and the towering rainforest of the Northeast. The endemic birds are a big feature of this tour, and we saw the vast majority of them, including all the vangas, all the mesites, all the ground- rollers (several of which placed in the bird of the trip), cuckoo-roller and all the Malagasy warblers possible on this itinerary. This is way more than just a birding tour though, and even the most hardcore birders ae charmed by the other amazing wildlife of this unique place. Lemurs go without saying (and we saw an impressive 28 species), but Lesser Streaked Tenrec and Ring-tailed Vontsira (a type of Malagasy carnivore) were up there with Indri to top the mammals of the trip. Tropical Birding is particularly strong on other animal groups too and we identified a staggering 50 reptile species, 20 frogs, almost 50 butterflies and over 30 reef fish! This is a very popular time of year for birding groups to visit Madagascar, but our long history of tours here meant that we secured the very best local guides at each location and our wonderful ground agent secured the very best hotels and drivers available, making it not only a very successful but also comfortable trip too. -

The area from Puttalam to Wanatha-Villuwa has the highest abundance of this species in Sri Lanka. They are deliberately killed by people in this area due to mythical beliefs and folk stories related to this species. Unplanned agricultural practices also destroy their habitats. The Sri Lankan C. zeylanicus population may be different from Indian populations and their taxonomic status has not been investigated. Chamaeleo zeylanicus is found in Sri Lanka, et al., 2004; Reptile Database, 2009), of which India and Pakistan in South Asia (Boulenger, 1890; more than 56 species belong to the genus Das, 1994; Das & de Silva, 2005; Deraniyagala, Chamaeleo (Halliday & Adler, 2002; Pough et al., 1953; Smith, 1935). -

Telperion was delineated into four physiographic- physiognomic units based on vegetation and topography and sampled by following the Braun–Blanquet (Zurich–Montpellier) method. A modified TWINSPAN classification was performed to derive a first approximation of the major plant habitats whereby seven broad plant habitat units were identified potentially available to chameleons. -

At over 1,000 miles long and 350 miles wide, the world’s fourth largest island can be a challenge to get around, and transport by road is not always the practical option. So we also took several internal flights with Madagascar Airlines. In our experience, a reliable carrier, but when ‘technical difficulties’ did maroon us for some 24 hours, a pre-planned ‘extra’ day in the programme at least meant that we were able to stay ‘on target’ in terms of the sites and animals we wished to see. We flew Kenya Airlines to Antananarivo (Tana) via Nairobi (flights booked through Trailfinders https://www.trailfinders.com/ ) I chose Cactus Tours https://www.cactus-madagascar.com/ as our ground agent. -

MURTHY Zoological Survey of India, Madras 600028 Some 150 species referable to 8 families, namely Gekkonidae, Agamidae, Chamaeleonidae, Scincidae, Dibamidae, Lacertidae, Anguidae, and Varanidae comprise the saurian fauna of India. GECKOS (Family Gekkonidae): Geckos are small, gentle lizards characterised by a soft dull skin and large unblinking eyes. They are the most abundant and familiar lizards in the tropics as the 'Nocturnal prowlers' in every house. Some have clinging pads on the underside of their toes which enable them to climb smooth surfaces. Geckos are found in the houses, on the ground, in the forests and on the tree-tops. They are the only reptiles to have a true voice, matching the calling notes of frogs and birds. Even their popular name 'gecko' is derived from the clicking sounds such as `yecko' and 'gecko' produced by these house lizards by pressing the tongue against the roof of the mouth. They mostly feed on insects. All geckos are egg layers but not more than two eggs are laid by the female under the hollow of a tree, or under the ceiling or stones in the ground. The eggs of geckos are hard and brittle instead of being leathery like those of most lizards. Some 51 species of geckos contained in 14 genera, namely Eublepharis, Stenodactylus, Cyrtodactylus, Cnemaspis, Calodactylodes, Dravidogecko, Hemidactylus, Cosymbotus, Hemiphyllodactylus, Gekko, Ptychozoon, Phelsuma, Teratolepis, and Lophopholis are known. The Fat-tailed gecko, Eublepharis macularius, is an inhabitant of the arid areas of northwest India. -

Madagascar Comprehensive III Trip Report 13th November to 4th December 2015 Scaly Ground Roller at Mantadia National Park Trip report and photographs by tour leader Heinz Ortmann RBT Trip Report Madagascar Comprehensive III Nov/Dec 2015 2 Tour Summary Highlights were many and varied, including some of the world’s most sought-after and must- see species: all 3 mesites, all 5 stunning ground rollers, the four asities, all extant coua species, 18 species of remarkable vangas and all ten of the Malagasy warblers. An amazing host of fabulous mammals (26 species, of which 23 were lemurs) and “herps” (44 species) were also enjoyed during this amazing tour. Our tour kicked off in the country’s busy capital, Antananarivo. In the gardens of our lodge Red Fody, Madagascan Stonechat, Souimanga Sunbird, Madagascan Mannikin, Malagasy Bulbul, Malagasy White-eye, Madagascan Wagtail and the long-staying Madagascar Nightjar were seen during the course of the morning. Several of these species would end up being seen on most days during the course of the trip. Later in the afternoon, Tsarasaotra Park (Lake Alarobia) was our first birding stop, having traversed the outskirts of Tana with its rice paddies and busy streets, to reach our destination. The two freshwater ‘lakes’ here support several water bird species in impressive numbers. Visiting in the late afternoon generally tends to be the most rewarding as herons, egrets and ducks return from their earlier foraging forays. White-faced Whistling Ducks and Red-billed Teals were present in impressively large numbers, whilst we found a handful of the smaller Hottentot Teals on the second lake.
