WelcomeSweet to Pea Festival 2021 They say, “Hindsight is 2020.” I think we’re all just glad to have 2020 in the rear view mirror. I’d like to give the Sweet Pea board a big shout-out for planning a great festival this year, while not knowing if we’d actually be able to celebrate. Many hours of thought and discussion brought us to this point. Our executive director, Kris did a fantastic job finding grants to keep the organization going through a very tough year. Thank you to the hundreds of volunteers who make Sweet Pea happen.

Now, sit back, relax in the shade of a big old spruce tree in Lindley Park, smell the sweet pea flowers that inspired this signature gathering, listen to kids laughing, and enjoy the magic of our amazing musicians, artists, dancers and all the activities that make Bozeman such a special place in the summer. Welcome! Dave Crawford Sweet Pea Board President Havin’ fun in ‘21! A Bozeman tradition since 1978, Sweet Pea is where art & community meet. Bringing dance, theater, music & fine arts from local, regional, national, and international artists, Sweet Pea is not just an event that focuses on all forms of art; Sweet Pea gives back to the community with grants for art organizations, art education and art projects such as the Bogert Park Pool Mosaic. With additional events leading up to the Festival including Chalk on the Walk & the Bite of Bozeman and other events during the year such as our Ice Sculpture Competition and the Gingerbread House Building Competition, Sweet Pea strives to fulfill its mission to promote & cultivate the arts & to expand its commitment to our community year round.

Thank you for being here and funding Sweet Pea 2021, and in turn the arts organizations and projects who rely on us for grants. And when someone asks you about Sweet Pea, feel free to use my elevator pitch. Kris Olenicki Executive Director P.S. SATURDAY Tall Tall Trees Asheville, NC SATURDAY 1:30 PM • THE BOWL

Tall Tall Trees is the pseudonym of songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mike Savino. Touring non- stop since 2009, he pioneers a world of psychedelic electric banjo music, captivating audiences with his loop-based one-man shows. A Wave of Golden Things, his 4th studio album, opens with the distant crow of a rooster and takes off in a dust cloud of swirling banjo, drums, and bass. The lead off track, The Wind, She Whispers, quickly evolves from a droning mountain melody into full-blown banjo . Though the banjo is heavily featured, the influence of Pink Floyd and Cat Stevens can be felt as much as banjo mavericks, like Earl Scruggs and Béla Fleck. Savino’s message is one of hope and finding peace of mind in the chatter of the modern world. He will be performing with local drummer, Drew Fleming, and longtime collaborator and friend, Kishi Bashi, may show up for a few tunes. 12 SATURDAY

For the last two years they’ve been playing all over the Pacific Northwest as well as Puerto Rico, Ireland, and Western Europe. They’ve been described as “Elliott Smith meets Dolly Parton in space” and they’re okay with that.

This year all donations received January through Give Big went directly to a joint program with HRDC. We know many people, families, and businesses alike, have experienced challenges and even devastating hardship over the past year. Partnering with HRDC, Sweet Pea gave 300 three-day adult passes to affected members of our community. Additionally, we included Sweet Pea Dollars, which can be used during the Festival to purchase food at our food vendor booths.

24 Montana Mural Project Highlighting Our Threatened & Endangered Species Through Art Modeled after the highly successful Audubon Society Project, Craighead Institute, with support from the Sweet Pea Festival, is commissioning artists to paint murals of the following Montana plant and animal species: Black- footed Ferret, Canada Lynx, Grizzly Bear, Bull Trout, Pallid Sturgeon, White Sturgeon, Least Tern, Piping Plover, Whooping Crane, Water Howellia, Spalding’s Campion, and Ute Ladies Tresses.
