Sweet Pea Festival of the Arts Emerson Lawn to See More Montana Artists and Art Demos

WelcomeSweet to Pea Festival 2021 They say, “Hindsight is 2020.” I think we’re all just glad to have 2020 in the rear view mirror. I’d like to give the Sweet Pea board a big shout-out for planning a great festival this year, while not knowing if we’d actually be able to celebrate. Many hours of thought and discussion brought us to this point. Our executive director, Kris did a fantastic job finding grants to keep the organization going through a very tough year. Thank you to the hundreds of volunteers who make Sweet Pea happen. Now, sit back, relax in the shade of a big old spruce tree in Lindley Park, smell the sweet pea flowers that inspired this signature gathering, listen to kids laughing, and enjoy the magic of our amazing musicians, artists, dancers and all the activities that make Bozeman such a special place in the summer. Welcome! Dave Crawford Sweet Pea Board President Havin’ fun in ‘21! But it was a road we had to navigate to get to until we never here and now. Last May, when it became apparent that Sweet Pea couldn’t happen in its usual fashion, which meant no income, our focus shifted to have to mention finding funding. We applied for more grants in the past 15 months than we’ve 2020 again. applied for in the last six years. But there’s a happy ending: Sweet Pea finished 2020 in the black with One more thing worth mentioning regarding grant applications. One an income of $187.70. And then kismet: Our friends at Verge Theater particular application had a challenging requirement; I had to write needed to purchase webcams for their virtual productions. The cost? Sweet Pea’s “elevator pitch” in 750 characters or less. Not words mind $182.51 each! While we couldn’t give much, we gave what we had. There you, but characters. This forced me to really think about Sweet Pea and is now a webcam aptly named “Sweet Pea” at the Verge Theater. (I’ll bet what’s important to us. That said, here’s what Sweet Pea is all about: it is the most fun webcam of them all!) A Bozeman tradition since 1978, Sweet Pea is where art & community meet. Bringing dance, theater, music & fine arts from local, regional, national, and international artists, Sweet Pea is not just an event that focuses on all forms of art; Sweet Pea gives back to the community with grants for art organizations, art education and art projects such as the Bogert Park Pool Mosaic. With additional events leading up to the Festival including Chalk on the Walk & the Bite of Bozeman and other events during the year such as our Ice Sculpture Competition and the Gingerbread House Building Competition, Sweet Pea strives to fulfill its mission to promote & cultivate the arts & to expand its commitment to our community year round. Thank you for being here and funding Sweet Pea 2021, and in turn the arts organizations and projects who rely on us for grants. And when someone asks you about Sweet Pea, feel free to use my elevator pitch. Kris Olenicki Executive Director P.S.
