2016 Impact Report Letter from Our Chairman 2016 IMPACT REPORT LETTER FROM OUR CHAIRMAN Dear Friends, On behalf of The NASCAR Foundation, I want to personally thank each and every member of what we call the ”NASCAR Family” for their enthusiasm, engagement and contributions throughout 2016. Of course, 2016 will always be a year of bittersweet memories for everyone involved with The NASCAR Foundation. There was so much accomplished, so much to celebrate – but it all was tempered by the loss of our founder, our visionary and our leader, Chairwoman Emeritus Betty Jane France. We can take comfort by knowing that throughout 2016 we worked diligently to fulfill her vision, with the most noticeable example being The NASCAR Foundation’s Inaugural Honors Gala held in New York City that September, only weeks after Betty Jane’s passing. She was the driving force behind the gala, just as she had been the driving force back in the early 1980s when NASCAR moved its postseason awards banquet to Manhattan. The Honors Gala, held at the Marriott Marquis, was a most appropriate setting to announce the winner of the Sixth Annual Betty Jane Humanitarian Award presented by Nationwide, Andy Hoffman of the Nebraska-based Team Jack Foundation. The award is presented to a NASCAR fan who has done outstanding work on behalf of children in need in their community. The award honors the philanthropic ideals of Betty Jane France. Hoffman also was recognized at the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Awards in December, at Wynn Las Vegas. The award presentation was not only the highlight of the Honors Gala but of our year overall, during which we commemorated “10 Years of Giving,” a first decade of existence for the foundation that resulted in approximately $30 million in donations to impact the lives of children in need. The Honors Gala itself raised more than $1.6 million to be used to enhance the delivery of medical care to children across the country through the newly established Speediatrics Children’s Fund. As we looked ahead to 2017 and the start of our second decade of helping children in our racing communities, we had only to think of Betty Jane France for inspiration. Everyone at The NASCAR Foundation is committed to honoring her memory and legacy. We are confident we can do so, because of your support. You are helping us realize the dreams of our founder – and our foundation. Sincerely, Mike Helton Chairman & President, The NASCAR Foundation 1 | 2016 Impact Report Letter From Our Chairman | 2 10Yrs of Giving Infographic 01.pdf 1 7/19/2017 2:50:50 PM The NASCAR Foundation is a leading national charity that works to improve the life and health of children who need it most in communities of NASCAR families across the U.S. Since 2006, The NASCAR Foundation has committed more than $30 Million dollars to initiatives that inspire children around the country to live happier, healthier lives. C M 3 Y CM MY CY CMY K MORE THAN OUR VISION More than 16 million children in America are facing barriers to access for medical care and services, and we are dedicated to breaking down those barriers and helping children get across the finish line! We believe every child should have a chance at a healthy life. The NASCAR Foundation is making children’s health and medical needs their top priority. 3 | 2016 Impact Report Our Vision | 4 A B G H A. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE HITACHI TO CONTINUE TEAM PENSKE PARTNERSHIP IN 2018 Multi-Faceted Relationship to Enter Seventh Season with Championship INDYCAR Program MOORESVILLE, N.C. (January 15, 2018) – Team Penske and Hitachi Group today announced an extension of their partnership for the 2018 Verizon IndyCar Series season. After a productive five-year relationship working with three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves of Team Penske, the familiar Hitachi branding will transition to the No. 1 Dallara/Chevrolet of reigning INDYCAR champion Josef Newgarden for eight races in the 2018 season. Additionally, Hitachi will continue as an associate sponsor on Team Penske’s other Verizon IndyCar Series entries – the Dallara/Chevrolets driven by Simon Pagenaud, the 2016 series champion and Will Power, the 2014 title winner, along with a return to Castroneves’ No. 3 car for the 102nd running of the Indianapolis 500. “Our partnership with Hitachi continues to deliver for both organizations across a wide variety of business platforms,” said Roger Penske. “Hitachi is deeply involved in our on- track performance as they continue to collaborate with Chevrolet on its winning INDYCAR engine program. Away from the race track, our relationship continues to reach new heights with shared success through various automotive and technology projects, along with joint marketing and promotional initiatives. We are excited to build on this success in 2018.” Hitachi and Team Penske began their partnership in 2012 and it has evolved into one of the successful pairings in the INDYCAR paddock. The industry leaders have aligned for race wins, podium finishes and pole positions and the future is bright with Newgarden, one of the fastest rising stars in motorsports.

  • Here's What Seemed Like a Three-Part Recipe for Losing an Indy 500: 1
0 22 Here’s what seemed like a three-part recipe for losing an Indy 500: 1. Evict from the lobby of a plush hotel a year-old March rear-engine racing car; 2. Hire at the last instant a semi-retired old gaffer to race it; 3. Man it with a slap-dash and inexperienced crew whose members include an insurance-claims adjuster, a part-time truck driver, and a fabricator whose specialties aren’t dumping fuel or swapping rubber but boring into the insides of turbochargers Every odds-maker and Indy 500 handicapper going would have spent two minutes examining this hodge-podge and declared it the 1987 500’s biggest long- shot. And rightly so, because in its first and only experience of practicing together, which was during Carburetion Day’s final tune-up, the antique racing car, doddering racing driver, and butter- fingered crew successfully engineered ridiculous pit stops slower than two-thirds of the rest of the field of 33. Once the 500 started, the jittery old racing driver began performing to everybody’s worst expectations. First he barely escaped involvement in a big accident on the first corner of the opening lap. Next he fell a full lap behind – the worst thing that could have happened. And then, on his very first pit stop, his inexperienced crew did OK. But the 47-year-old racing driver was struck down with another case of nerves and stalled his engine. And then, after lots of odd things – very, very odd things – had occurred in the 500’s remaining 450 miles, this gang of no-hopes and their doddering driver had conquered the odds and won the Indy 71st 500.
