Light Emitting Diodes: LEDs are new technology, exploiting the laws of quantum physics to directly convert electrical energy into visible light in a more efficient way than any previously available light sources can. This means an immediate difference in your electricity bill each month. Additionally, LED lighting lasts longer than any other light source. You will not invest time and money changing lamps in the way that you have been doing until now.

Some facts: LEDs convert energy into light more efficiently than the lighting that you are used to. The technical term is Lumens per Watt of power, which simply means you get more light per dollar than with other light sources. In addition to this, LED lighting creates less waste heat than other sources, meaning not only do you save money on lighting but also you spend less money removing waste heat from your space with your air conditioning system.

Clean: Lighting accounts for 25% of all the electricity used in the world today. In its 750 hour lifetime, your standard home 60 watt A lamp pushes 76 pounds of sulphur dioxide and 112 grams of nitrogen oxide or 8 milligrams of plutonium waste into the earth’s atmosphere. With a typical 5:1 improvement in efficiency over conventional lighting, your use of LEDs will have a real impact on the health of this planet.

What powers LED’s? The device that conditions power for an LED is called a driver. It is analogous to a transformer. Just like transformers, LED drivers come with varying parameters to exactly match the LED being used. Some LEDs are designed for use with 120V of power some are 24V and others 12V.

How many different types of flexible lighting are there? There are fourteen different flexible linear products offered but they are broken down into six distinctly different types. The only limitation is the designer’s imagination – LEDs are applicable almost anywhere. Ceiling coves, architectural accents, railings, bars and signs to name a few. Certain LED products can even be used outdoors. Linear LEDs are available in white light, colored light, or color changing versions. Some products can achieve literally millions of color variations and may be programmed to follow patterns.

DL-FLEX UP is a narrow strip resembling tape. It’s a flexible circuit board with LEDs mounted on the surface. The Flex Up series is a combination of small physical footprint and high output. Sections snap together. A rigid aluminum channel is available to expand mounting options.

DL-SQ series features LEDs clustered in squares the size of a cracker and linked together by wires. Their high lumen output makes them ideal for hidden source lighting. The DL-RE is the same concept in a rectangular format. Originally designed for signage, it is inherently waterproof and has now proved itself in backlighting and cove applications.

LDEC FESTOON SERIES has lamps that can easily be changed in the field. This is useful for display work where the need to change the look is a frequent occurrence. Conventional festoon lamp fixtures are well known as cove and accent lights. The LDEC Festoon adds all the benefits of solid-state lighting to an industry standard fixture.

LEDROPE looks similar to incandescent rope light in that the lights are encased in a durable clear PVC plastic. Rope is good for “way finding” and architectural highlighting. Frequently used as a low cost cove or backlight, LEDROPE has a broad and diffuse light distribution when concealed.

LLF series LEDs look like chains of little light bulbs. They are mounted to a plastic strip that allows tight and even right angle bends. Ideal for lettering signs or tight bend requirements. Normally used as a component in a designed system rather than as a finished lighting fixture.

COLORFLEX approximates the look of neon lighting. Comprised of lengths of continuous smooth color (non delineated) encased in a translucent plastic. There are no visible points of light. Frequently used in coves or in direct view as a delineator – just like traditional Neon, it can even be formed into signage.

Why are the specs different between white and colors of LEDs? In traditional lighting color filters are placed in front of the light source. LEDs produce light directly from electrical current using solid-state devices. The characteristics of the solid-state devices used to produce each color vary at the atomic level, and so the power requirements of each type of Flexible Linear product will vary between 12V, 24V and 120V.

How is color changing done? RGB Color changing can be done with any of JLED’s lighting controllers. There are varying control options depending on the application that lighting effects will be used on. Simple color chasing and dimming can be done using the LC-180-RF. For more complex scenes and lighting systems the LC-PC-200-RF is preprogrammed to handle many different effects. For custom lighting effects and custom color displays the LC-PC-100 is the optimal choice.

What is a controller? A controller is an electronic device associated with color changing LEDs. It regulates color, duration and brightness. A controller can be as simple as a single button to turn the LED product on or off through a wall plate interface to “dial in” color selections. JLED even offers large scale architectural digital control systems allowing the user to program color and intensity by time, date or by user input, remotely or via PC computer interface.

Are any products dimmable? Yes, but there are different dimming solutions for different types of voltages. For use in 12V and 24V product applications, you may choose a dimming power supply or a lighting controller.

What are the power supply guidelines? It is recommended that all runs stay close to or around 80% of the power supply’s maximum load. For example, if you are installing a maximum home run of 30’ using the DL-FLEX-UP your resulting wattage load would be 42W (30 x 1.4 W/Section). With a plug and play power connection you would use the DL-PS-60/24 power supply. If you are running a Hard-Wire power connection you would use the DL-PS-60/24-HW or a DL-PS-60/24-JB to keep your connections secure in an enclosure.
