NEW OR LITTLE KNOWN FROM THE VISAYAN ISLANDS, THE (I)

OKANOMasao and OKANOTetsuo

In’this paper we d6scribe some new or little known butterfies from the Visayan lslands, the Philippines, together with some addition of new localitigs, and a few synonymies of butterflies occurring in this area. , In prcparing this paper, we wish to express our hearty thanks to Dr. T. SHiR6zu for his kind advice and encouragement’, and to Messrs. J. OHKuRA, S. KoiwAyA, Y. TAKANAMi, M. HosoKAwA’, T. MizuNuMA and T. SuzuKi for their kindness offered us in various ways; thanks are a1so due to Messrs. R.C. SARiNo, 」 VALDEz, D. SQRIA and G. JiMENEz,.who assisted .us in our -collcting in the island of Cebu in March and December,’ @1985. The specimens meritioned in this paper are preserved in ouT collection.

PIERIDAE

Hebomoia glaucippe boholensis FRuHsToRFER, 1911

Specimens examined: 3 8, Argao Beach・Club, Cebu ls., xii. 1985. This is the first definite record of the species from Cebu ls. Three male specirpens before us cannot be separable from those of subsp. boholensis from

Bohol and Negros. DANAIDAE

Tirumala ishmoides trasinanus (FRuHsToRFER, 1911)

Danaida ishmoides trasinanus FRuHsToRFER, 1911 : 274. Cebu. Danaida ishmbides sontinus FRuHsToRFRE, 1911. 274. Mindoro. syn. nov. Tirumala ishmoides sontinus: MoRisHiTA, 1981: 467, pl. 97, figs. 1-4, ’ W; 7, ?.’ @Mindoro;

Luzon; Marinduque ; Romblon ; Negros. Tirumala. ishmoides strymon: MoRisHiTA (part.), 1981 : 467. Cebu.

Speciniens examined: 58 2 9, Mindoro ls,, ix. 1976; 7¢ 2 9, Hacapan-

Camp 4, xii. 1985;1 9, Rosario, Cebu ls., xii. 1985..

1) Laboratory of Biology,.College of Humanities and Social Sciences, lwate University. 2) Laboratory of Silviculture, Faculty of Agriculture, Kyushu University. 106 Artes Liberales No.38, 1986’

FRuHsToRFER (191!) described three subspecies of D. ishmoidbs from the. Phil.ippines; trasii nuS from Cebu, sontinus.from Mindoro, and strymon from . So far as we examined, however, all the specimens mentioned above are entirely conspecific and undoubtedly belong to one and same subspecies. Consequently we consider that Sontinus is nothing but a synonym of trasinanus.

Euploea mulciber’ cebuensis .subsp. nov.

(Pl. 1, figs. 1-4, 8 9. Tekt-fig. 1, distribution map)

TrePsichrois visaya SEMpER (part.), 1886: 27. Cebu.

EuPloea mulczber visaya: MoRisHiTA (part.), 1981 : 567, pl. 142, fig. 12, 9. Cebu.

Similar to subsp. dinagatensis TsuKADA & NisHiyAMA from Dinagat, but decidedly smaller in size in both sexes. g. On the upPer surface the forewing ground colour is more brownish as ih subsp. visaya from Bohol and Leyte; the postdiscal light blue spots are more strongly developed especially in spaces 4 and 5 than in dinagatensis. 9. On the upper surface of the forewing the violet blue reflection is gener- ally present, bgt less ’prominent, and the submarginal white spots are generally more reduced in size than in dinagatensis. From subsp. visaya this new subspecies is easily separable in smaller size in both sexes, the presence of the postdiscal spots on the foreworig above in male

and more blackened ground colou’ 秩@in female. Length of forewing: 38 mm., 8; 38-42 mm., 9.

SEMpER (1886) described T. visaya froni Cebu, Bohol, Camotes, Samar, Leyte and Panaon, but the’characteristics ’of E. mulciber from Cebu ls. do not agree with those mentioned in his description’ ip. 27) and figures (pl. 5, figs. 2, 8, Bohol; 3, 9, Leyte).
