According to the Mahayana tradition, we all have something to offer to this world, even though we may be A confused about what that could be. Everyone has buddha-nature, which means that each one of us is endowed with excellent bodhisattva qualities. But those qualities are not always apparent or wisely used, and they can flourish only if we are willing to let go of the highly conditioned narratives we have of ourselves and others. Religion and Psychotherapy in Modern Japan

It covers the topics of modern religion and psychotherapy in Japan and connects them with the recent major crises of Aum Shinrikyo and the earthquake and tsunami of March 2011. Akihito Suzuki, Professor of History at Keio University, Japan Chris Harding and his fellow editors have brought together a significant set of essays examining the relationship between the ‘psy disciplines’ of psychiatry, psychology, and psychotherapy, and religion in Japan. Hard- ing’s overview takes us beyond the problematic definitional issues relating to religion to show how the ‘psy disciplines’ have helped shape the ways in which religion is manifested in modern Japan. The essays that follow intro- duce a wealth of Japanese scholarship in the field that will be of value to all who are interested in religion, psychotherapy, and Japanese culture in general. Ian Reader, Professor of Religious Studies at Lancaster University, UK A novel take on the role of religion in Japan, and another significant con- tribution to understanding religion in modern Japanese society. View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE Shinran’s Indebtedness to T‘an-luan Bands ShOjun Sbinrarft Position in Pure Land Tradition The significance of Honen’s appearance in Japanese Buddhism lies in his epoch-making task of achieving the independence of the Pure Land school, which had long been regarded merely as a by-stream of Mahayana Buddhism. From various Buddhist disciplines he adopted the Nembutsu practice, insisting that in the latter days of the Dharma, Nembutsu practice is the only way through which all people, men and women, young and old, noble and mean, may equally be saved by virtue of the great saving power of Amida’s Original Vow. As his teaching spread rapidly to all parts of Japan, a strong reaction to it arose. Mydc Shonin (1173-1232) of the Kegon Sect was a representative of the older sects. He published a work entitled Zaijarin (“Smashing a Heterodox Dharma- Wheel”), in which he severely criticized Honen’s radical standpoint. By and large, his criticisms against Honen centered round the question of bodhicitta. Myoe held that whereas the position of bodhicitta (man’s aspiration for En lightenment) in the Way of the Buddha is crucial, Honen totally neglected its importance, replacing it by Nembutsu, and therefore that Honen’s doctrine could not possibly be called Buddhism. As Myoe was one of the most revered Buddhist priests of his time, a strict follower of Buddhist discipline himself and free from any sectarian or political prejudices, the penetrating question he raised was thought deserving of serious consideration. -

Introduction The two philosophers who form the subject of this thesis may strike one as strange bedfellows. Tanabe Hajime (1889-1962),1 the Kyoto School philosopher often considered to have been an intellectual accomplice of the militarist regime that took Japan into World War II, condemned the irrationality of the Japanese people and its leaders immediately after the war's conclusion and called for national repentance in the form of the willful, obedient surrender of the self to a religious Other- power. -

D. Cornell University 2009 Contemporary services for safe childbirth offered by Buddhist temples and Shintô shrines attract large numbers of pregnant women and their families. These institutions generate much income from their services and also work closely with various maternity-related enterprises, such as obstetricians, retail outlets, printing houses, and manufacturers of infant formula. They have also created narratives where issues related to women and reproduction take center stage in their material culture and menu of ritual services, even though Japanese society, in general, held the attitude throughout history that menstrual blood and lochia defiled the Buddhas and the kami and considered women by extension impure. This dissertation offers a challenging, interdisciplinary approach to understanding the various facets of Japan’s maternity industry. Through participant-observation, field research, and investigation of documents and archives, I illustrate how rituals for safe childbirth have become integral services for select Buddhist temples and Shintô shrines and demonstrate how the concerns of commodification, secularization, and the reconstitution of customs and folkways are activated. Religious rituals of safe childbirth cannot be researched without consideration of the current social crisis of Japan’s low birthrate. This study examines authoritative measures and government policy to manage the reproductive lives of the Japanese that have been in place since the Tokugawa period. -

Blum Pure Land Buddhist texts and practices have been part of the fabric of Japanese Buddhism since the Nara period, but they grew to have significantly greater impact in the Kamakura period when the first inde pendent schools of Pure Land Buddhism were founded by Honen and Shinran. This article looks at the evolution of ritual funeral practices car ried out within the Pure Land school of Shinshu, particularly the Hon- ganji establishment, and discusses the apparent conflict many of these practices have had with orthodox Shinshu doctrine. The core issue here is twofold:1 )the ways in which Honganji decided to participate in mortuary rites to assuage the anxiety of its lay followers and strengthen its own financial base through the revenue it generated, and 2) the degree to which these practices could be rationalized in terms of their doctrinal orthodoxy. After tracing the historical links between Pure Land Buddhism and the afterlife in Japan, the article looks at the views of Shinran as well as the interpretations of Tokugawa-period scholars who tried to issue “rulings” on where Honganji orthodoxy should stand regarding the funeral rituals performed by Shinshu priests. By the Tokugawa period, mortuary rites had come to dominate Shinshu culture, and the most common of such rites are examined here: the kue-issho,o-toki, eitai-kyd, and hoon-ko. Pure Land Buddhism as an Alternative Marga Mark L. Blum 1. MAIN ISSUES IN CONSIDERATION OF A PURE LAND MARGA The soteriological message of Pure Land thought has typically been presented in modem scholarship by utilizing a paradigm built on such theories as the three stages of the Dharma, the Buddha’s vows of com passion, and the immense popularity of the Pure Land movement among the masses.1 But, by ignoring the context of the sudden versus gradual debate in China pervasive at the time of the Pure Land move ment’s ascendancy, as well as other relevant soteriological issues such as nonretrogression and the marga implications of samadhi experience, such presentations generally fail to lay out a proper hermeneutic re quired for modern understanding of the Pure Land Buddhist experi ence. It appears, rather, to have been the stress on faith in figures such as Shinran that has attracted many Western scholars to the study of Pure Land history and thought. Much of this research can be traced to the active scholarship of individuals associated with one of the branches of Shinran’s school, the JOdo ShinshU. Their work in West ern languages has tended to focus on either the issue of man’s religious standing vis-^-vis the salvific vows of Amitabha Buddha or the experi ences in Shinran’s life that led him to his own realization.2 Yet, how- * The author wishes to thank Dr. G.
