  • The Vanished Land of Childhood: Autobiographical Narration in Astrid
The Vanished Land of Childhood: Autobiographical Narration in Astrid Lindgren’s Work Bettina Kümmerling-Meibauer Published in: Barnboken . 1-2. Special issue: Astrid Lindgren Centennial Conference. 2007. 83-9. In her essays and speeches Astrid Lindgren stressed over and over again her special relationship to her own childhood However, what constitutes this relationship and how it influenced Lindgren’s literary development and her self- image as an author has not been adequately investigated. Based on the recently developed concept of cultural memory as a new paradigm in the cultural and literary sciences and on recent cognitive studies in memory research, I would like to demonstrate that there exists an important connection between literature and memory in Lindgren’s literary work. Three types of autobiographical writing The variety of autobiographical narration in Lindgren’s work is astonishing. Three types of autobiographical writing can be distinguished: (a) childhood memories in a general sense, i.e. autobiographical texts written for children and/or an adult readership, like Mina påhitt (“My Ideas,” 1971; Samuel August från Sevedstorp och Hanna Hult , (“Samuel August from Sevedstorp and Hanna from Hult,” 1975); Mitt Småland (“My Småland,” 1987) (b) “hidden” autobiography, for example The Children of Noisy Village , 1947; Mardie’s Adventures , 1960 (c) fictional autobiography, i.e. Assar Bubbla (“Assar Bubble,” 1987). The first type consists of Lindgren’s memories about her childhood and a biographical account of her parent’s love

Kunordigis Renato Corsetti. Introduction WHAT IS ESPERANTO? Esperanto, the international language, is a language developed to make it easier for people of different cultures to communicate. Its author, Dr. L. L. Zamenhof (1859-1917), published his "Lingvo Internacia" in 1887 under the pseudonym "Dr. Esperanto". It is now spoken by at least two million people, in over 100 countries. There are thousands of books and over 100 periodicals published currently. But what makes it any more international than French, English or Russian? Incorrectly termed ’artificial’ (the right word is ’planned’), Esperanto is specifically intended for international/intercultural use, so those who use it meet each other on an equal footing, since neither is using his or her native language. With national languages, the average person isn’t able to express himself as well as a native speaker or the gifted linguist. Thanks to its simple, logical, regular design, anyone can learn Esperanto fairly rapidly. A LIVING LANGUAGE Esperanto is a living language, used for everything people use any other language for. But it’s much easier to learn than a national language. Even people who can’t remember a word of a language they studied for years in high school or college need only months of intensive study to become fluent in Esperanto.

Suddenly, he witnesses a coachman flogging his old and tired horse. He rushes forward and throws himself around the horse’s Oneck in an attempt to protect it. Then, after bursting into tears, he falls to the ground, unconscious, perhaps struck, for the first time, by the serious symptoms of advanced syphilis.2 This event concluded Nietzsche’s prolific career at the early age of 44. It would be followed by more than a decade of crippling physical and mental disorder, before he died his second, and definitive, death on August 25, 1900. Thus, despite having 1 This essay is a rewritten and extended English version of the one published in connection with the hundredth anniversary of the death of Nietzsche: Tholander, Michael (2000). Friedrich Nietzsche – och Pippi Långstrump. Tvärsnitt, 22(3), 2-17. 2 Other theories suggest that Nietzsche suffered from a series of strokes, from dementia or from brain cancer, or that he fell victim to a combination of these maladies. See, e.g., Butler, Paul (2011). A Stroke of Bad Luck: CADASIL and Friedrich Nietzsche’s “Dementia” or Madness. In P. McNamara (Ed.), Dementia: History and Incidence. Santa Barbara: Praeger. Michael Tholander declared the exacting precept “Die at the right time!”3 in his most well-known book, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Nietzsche, quite ironically, died all too early, as well as all too late.
