THE MIRIAM WEINER ARCHIVAL COLLECTION BABI YAR (in Kiev), Ukraine September 29-30, 1941 From the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/kiev-and-babi-yar "On September 29-30, 1941, SS and German police units and their auxiliaries, under guidance of members of Einsatzgruppe C, murdered a large portion of the Jewish population of Kiev at Babi Yar, a ravine northwest of the city. As the victims moved into the ravine, Einsatzgruppen detachments from Sonderkommando 4a under SS- Standartenführer Paul Blobel shot them in small groups. According to reports by the Einsatzgruppe to headquarters, 33,771 Jews were massacred in this two-day period. This was one of the largest mass killings at an individual location during World War II. It was surpassed only by the massacre of 50,000 Jews at Odessa by German and Romanian units in October 1941 and by the two-day shooting operation Operation Harvest Festival in early November 1943, which claimed 42,000-43,000 Jewish victims." From Wikipedia.org https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babi_Yar According to the testimony of a truck driver named Hofer, victims were ordered to undress and were beaten if they resisted: "I watched what happened when the Jews—men, women and children—arrived. The Ukrainians[b] led them past a number of different places where one after the other they had to give up their luggage, then their coats, shoes and over- garments and also underwear. They also had to leave their valuables in a designated place. There was a special pile for each article of clothing. -
Spencer Sunshine*
Journal of Social Justice, Vol. 9, 2019 (© 2019) ISSN: 2164-7100 Looking Left at Antisemitism Spencer Sunshine* The question of antisemitism inside of the Left—referred to as “left antisemitism”—is a stubborn and persistent problem. And while the Right exaggerates both its depth and scope, the Left has repeatedly refused to face the issue. It is entangled in scandals about antisemitism at an increasing rate. On the Western Left, some antisemitism manifests in the form of conspiracy theories, but there is also a hegemonic refusal to acknowledge antisemitism’s existence and presence. This, in turn, is part of a larger refusal to deal with Jewish issues in general, or to engage with the Jewish community as a real entity. Debates around left antisemitism have risen in tandem with the spread of anti-Zionism inside of the Left, especially since the Second Intifada. Anti-Zionism is not, by itself, antisemitism. One can call for the Right of Return, as well as dissolving Israel as a Jewish state, without being antisemitic. But there is a Venn diagram between anti- Zionism and antisemitism, and the overlap is both significant and has many shades of grey to it. One of the main reasons the Left can’t acknowledge problems with antisemitism is that Jews persistently trouble categories, and the Left would have to rethink many things—including how it approaches anti- imperialism, nationalism of the oppressed, anti-Zionism, identity politics, populism, conspiracy theories, and critiques of finance capital—if it was to truly struggle with the question. The Left understands that white supremacy isn’t just the Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazis, but that it is part of the fabric of society, and there is no shortcut to unstitching it. -

In a 2007 opinion poll sponsored by the Stredisko Empirickych Vyzkumu (STEM) agency, 28 percent of respondents claimed to believe in God, while 48 percent identified themselves as atheists. Klaus Mann's Mephisto: A Secret Rivalry Abstract Critics of the 1960s and 1970s have focused their attention on Klaus Mann's use of his former brother-in- law, Gustaf Gründgens, as the model for the hero of his controversial novel, Mephisto, while more recent critics have emphasized its significance as a work of anti-Fascist literature. This essay seeks to resolve some of the apparent contradictions in Klaus Mann's motivation for writing Mephisto by viewing the novel primarily in the context of his life and career. Although Mephisto is the only political satire that Klaus Mann wrote, it is consistent with his life-long tendency to use autobiographical material as the basis for much of his plot and characterization. Mann transformed his ambivalent feelings about Gründgens, which long antedated the writing of Mephisto, into a unique work of fiction which simultaneously expresses his indignation over the moral bankruptcy of the Third Reich and reveals his envy of Gründgens's career successes. -
Sept. 19, 2019 Attorney General Phil Weiser to Address Hatred and Extremism at Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Melanie Avner, [email protected], 720-670-8036 Attorney General Phil Weiser to Address Hatred and Extremism at Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony Sept. 22 Denver, CO (Sept. 19, 2019) – Attorney General Phil Weiser will give a special address on confronting hate and extremism at the Mizel Museum’s annual Babi Yar Remembrance Ceremony on Sunday, September 22 at 10:00 a.m. at Babi Yar Memorial Park (10451 E. Yale Ave., Denver). The event commemorates the Babi Yar Massacre and honors all victims and survivors of the Holocaust. “The rise in anti-Semitism and other vicious acts of hatred in the U.S. and around the world underscore the need to confront racism and bigotry in our communities,” said Weiser. “We must honor and remember the victims of the Holocaust, learning from the lessons of the past in order to combat intolerance and hate in the world today.” Weiser’s grandparents and mother survived the Holocaust; his mother is one of the youngest living survivors. She was born in the Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany, and she and her mother were liberated the next day by the Second Infantry Division of the U.S. Army. Nearly 34,000 Jews were executed at the Babi Yar ravine on the outskirts of Kiev in Nazi-occupied Ukraine on September 29-30, 1941. This was one of the largest mass murders at an individual location during World War II. Between 1941 and 1943, thousands more Jews, Roma, Communists and Soviet prisoners of war also were killed there. It is estimated that some 100,000 people were murdered at Babi Yar during the war. -
Jews, Masculinity, and Political Violence in Interwar France
Jews, Masculinity, and Political Violence in Interwar France Richard Sonn University of Arkansas On a clear, beautiful day in the center of the city of Paris I performed the first act in front of the entire world. 1 Scholom Schwartzbard, letter from La Santé Prison In this letter to a left-wing Yiddish-language newspaper, Schwartzbard explained why, on 25 May 1926, he killed the former Hetman of the Ukraine, Simon Vasilievich Petliura. From 1919 to 1921, Petliura had led the Ukrainian National Republic, which had briefly been allied with the anti-communist Polish forces until the victorious Red Army pushed both out. Schwartzbard was a Jewish anarchist who blamed Petliura for causing, or at least not hindering, attacks on Ukrainian Jews in 1919 and 1920 that resulted in the deaths of between 50,000 and 150,000 people, including fifteen members of Schwartzbard's own family. He was tried in October 1927, in a highly publicized court case that earned the sobriquet "the trial of the pogroms" (le procès des pogroms). The Petliura assassination and Schwartzbard's trial highlight the massive immigration into France of central and eastern European Jews, the majority of working-class 1 Henry Torrès, Le Procès des pogromes (Paris: Editions de France, 1928), 255-7, trans. and quoted in Felix and Miyoko Imonti, Violent Justice: How Three Assassins Fought to Free Europe's Jews (Amherst, MA: Prometheus, 1994), 87. 392 Jews, Masculinity, and Political Violence 393 background, between 1919 and 1939. Baldwin made his way upstairs while Arnold and the others continued in the living room, and he absconded the house by way of the rooftop, leapt down, and stumbled through a briar patch to the sea, finished his brandy and tossed the glass in before he himself walked toward a final resting place, ready to let that water take him under, having amassed enough heartache to crave an alternate consciousness, a black slate. But at the last minute, hip-deep in the water, as if he had been hallucinating and a spark of differentiation separated the real from the illusion at the height of his stupor, Baldwin changed his mind, his mandate became more vivid to him. -

Corinne Chaponnière a mené l’enquête.
