Barbara Ann Hamre of The Colony, Texas, passed away January 25, 2020 at the age of 68. Barbara brought a light to the world that will continue to shine in the hearts of those that knew her and felt the warmth of her loving kindness. She was born on June 6, 1951 to Joseph Curro and Josephine (Santi) Curro in Omaha, Nebraska. Barbara graduated from Central High School in 1969 in Omaha. She married the love of her life, Gene Louis Hamre on May 5, 1973 at St Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in Omaha. Barbara and Gene ventured together to the Dallas area in 1975 before settling in The Colony, Texas in 1978 to begin the next chapter of their lives together. They raised two wonderful and beloved children together, who survive her today. She retired from CNA Insurance in 2016 after 38 years of committed service as an Underwriting Technician. Barbara served as a devoted and active parishioner of Holy Cross Catholic Church. She graciously volunteered extensive amounts of her time as a member of The Ladies of Holy Cross where she prepared and served food after funeral mass, and held several classes each year to teach fellow parishioners how to make rosaries. As a daughter of a World War II veteran, the wife of a Vietnam veteran, and the mother to a son who continues to serve in the United States Air Force, Barbara was an enthusiastically patriotic American. She gave her unwavering support to the men and women who serve this country. Barbara was a passionate Dallas Cowboys fan, and never missed watching a game ever since Roger Staubach was the quarterback. She was a caring neighbor, doting grandmother, thoughtful daughter, dear sister, loving mother, faithful wife, and a devout follower of Jesus Christ. Anybody who knew her was truly blessed and fortunate to know her. Barbara will be dearly missed by her friends and family.

She is survived by her family, whom she loved more than anything in the world: her husband of 46 years, Gene Hamre; son, Phillip and wife, Jonna; daughter, Hayley; granddaughters, Grace, Ava and Kaitlynn; sister, Cathy; Cathy’s husband, Bob; and many other beloved family and friends.

Barbara was preceded in death by her loving parents, Joseph and Josephine; brother, John; and brother-in-law, Don.

The family will welcome and receive friends during a visitation on Monday evening, February 10, 2020, from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Turrentine Jackson Morrow Funeral Home, 2525 Central Expressway North, Allen, TX 75013. A traditional prayer of the rosary will begin at 7:30 p.m. A memorial mass will be held Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m., February 11, 2020 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 7000 Morning Star Dr., The Colony, Texas. Mass will be followed by an onsite reception until 1:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, TX.

Memorial contributions may be made in Barbara’s name to Holy Cross Catholic Church or the American Cancer Society.

I have known Barbara Hamre from Central High School in Omaha for 4 great years. She was a special friend and we had great memories and were always together. She was a fun girl to be with and was always happy and friendly to all she met. I hope you all will know that she will be missed by many friends and family. My condolences to her friends and family! ROBERT SANCHEZ, FEBRUARY 11, 2020 Beside her many accomplishments as a wife, mother and business lady, Barbara was also a part of the “welcoming committee/hostess with the mostest” for Madison Drive. It was God’s blessing to me to have landed next door to the greathearted Hamres and enjoyed six and a half years of friendship before His angels escorted Barbara to her eternal neighborhood. Strength, dignity, wisdom and joy were just a few of the qualities with which Barb was graced. She had a finely tuned ability to discern the heart of a matter and was master of the nearly-lost art of providing a gentle word (or a humorous rebuttal) when and where it was needed. My happy memories of Barb include her cheery greeting from the window whenever I was tackling an outdoor project, the way she played with and protected her grandchildren, her serenity in the face of her neighbors’ foibles, sincere compassion for others and a true green thumb with the flowers. But my fondest memory of this dear lady was the result of serendipity. Last summer, the two of us met each other outside from 11 to nearly midnight so that we could search the skies for the Perseids meteor shower. Turns out, Barbara was an amateur astronomer, too! We spent that hour watching the heavens and admiring the profound and exquisite work of our Creator. Barbara was certainly one of God’s best creations; a gentle lady made in His own image and whose life brought honor and glory to her Lord, Jesus Christ, delight to her husband, life and love to her children and sweetness to everyone who knew her. She will be sorely missed…until we meet again. “We do not live to ourselves, and we do not die to ourselves. I always enjoyed being in her company whether we were crafting wreaths, tailgating at Cowboys games, watching the horse races at Lone Star Park, enjoying fajita night and, of course, Hayley’s 21st birthday in Vegas. I’ll also never forget when she would come visit Hayley in San Marcos, because she would cook us the most delicious spaghetti & meatball dinner! More than anything I’ll miss sitting at her kitchen table and visiting with her for hours. Barbara will be deeply missed and I will never forget the love and kindness she always showed me.

I called her my 'Italian' sister and I will miss her. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you that God will give you the strength to get through this very difficult time. ANGIE AGENS , JANUARY 29, 2020 I worked with Barbara for many years at CNA. She was one of the best Underwriting Techs at CNA. When she told me she was retiring, I tried to talk her out of it. Every time I tried to talk her out of it, she would just laugh. I would always ask her if she was retiring so she could get a Harley a take road trips with Gene. Once again, she would just laugh. Barbara and I kept in touch after she retired. Barbara will truly be missed by the CNA family but especially by me. Barbara was a true friend.
