According to the APG Directorate of Emergency Services, APG follows Maryland traffic laws. By law, drivers must move as close as pos- sible to the edge of the roadway, clear of any intersection, and remain stopped until the emergency vehicle has passed. Drivers cannot pass a mov- ing emergency vehi- cle using its signals. When approaching a stopped emergency vehicle, drivers must move over, if safe to do so, or slow down. Morris All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT Crucibles of Virtue and Vice: The Acculturation of Transatlantic Army Officers, 1815-1945 John F. Morris Throughout the long nineteenth century, the European Great Powers and, after 1865, the United States competed for global dominance, and they regularly used their armies to do so. While many historians have commented on the culture of these armies’ officer corps, few have looked to the acculturation process itself that occurred at secondary schools and academies for future officers, and even fewer have compared different formative systems. In this study, I home in on three distinct models of officer acculturation—the British public schools, the monarchical cadet schools in Imperial Germany, Austria, and Russia, and the US Military Academy—which instilled the shared and recursive sets of values and behaviors that constituted European and American officer cultures. Specifically, I examine not the curricula, policies, and structures of the schools but the subterranean practices, rituals, and codes therein. What were they, how and why did they develop and change over time, which values did they transmit and which behaviors did they perpetuate, how do these relate to nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century social and cultural phenomena, and what sort of ethos did they produce among transatlantic army officers? Drawing on a wide array of sources in three languages, including archival material, official publications, letters and memoirs, and contemporary nonfiction and fiction, I have painted a highly detailed picture of subterranean life at the institutions in this study.

Some of you might be thinking – this is going to be a very short talk. 3. Jesus was born 2016 years ago and we celebrate his birth on December 25. 4. As you will see, the history of Christmas is a little more complicated than that. Slide 2 1. For more than 300 years, Christians celebrated the resurrection of Jesus but did not celebrate his birth. 2. As Jewish historian Josephus explained near the end of the first century, “[Jewish] law does not permit us to make festivals at the births of our children, and thereby afford occasion of drinking to excess" Josephus Against Apion II.26. 3. As a result, early Christians paid very little attention to the date of Jesus’ birth 4. Paul’s letters and the Gospels of Mark and John say nothing at all about the birth of Jesus. Slide 3 1.     Presidents Washington & Eisenhower Had Their Own Eggnog Recipes National Eggnog Day is observed once a year on the day before Christmas. Also known as egg milk punch, eggnog is a very popular drink throughout the United States during the holidays. Eggnog is a sweetened dairy-based beverage that is traditionally made with milk and cream, sugar, whipped eggs and spices. When served at parties and holiday get-togethers, liquor is often added to the eggnog such as brandy, rum, whiskey, bourbon, vodka or a combination of liquors. The filled glass is typically garnished with a sprinkle of cinnamon, nutmeg or pumpkin spice. The origin of the eggnog drink is debated. It is the belief of some that the drink was originally developed in East Anglia, England, while others believe it originated as a medieval European beverage made with hot milk. The first time the term “eggnog” was ever used was in 1775 when Maryland clergyman and philologist Jonathan Boucher wrote a poem about the drink, which surprisingly was not published until thirty years after his death! The poem, which you’re bound to be curious about, went like this: “Fog-drams in the morn, or better still egg-nogg. At night hot-suppings, and at mid-day, grogg. My palate can regale” The first printed use of the term was in 1788 in the New-Jersey Journal of March 26th, which referred to a young man drinking a glass of eggnog. Eggnog may have developed from posset, a Medieval European beverage made with hot milk that curdled up when mixed with wine or ale and was then flavored with spices.

Despite the drink’s importance, very little has been done to optimize the eggnog recipe. In this current research, DNA2.0 rational GPS engineering, Design of Experiment and Machine Learning was utilized to analyze and optimize key variables in the production of eggnog. The ability to capture multivariable interactions during optimization is critical. Six active variables were identified: dairy quantity, C12 H22 O11 quantity, Vanilla planifolia quantity, Cinnamonum verum quantity, alcohol type, and alcohol quantity; with the goal of finding the optimal combination of all six variables. Due to the need to avoid excessive alcohol consumption and/or gluttony in the North Pole population, it was desirable to obtain statistically valid data using only a small fraction of available test combinations.
