That is, students will not only grasp the main message of each individual book of the Old Testament, but they will understand how that message contributes to the overall message of the Bible. Emphasis will be given to tracing the flow of redemptive history from the beginning of time until the inter-testamental period, showing how the entire Old Testament points to, prepares the way for, and is fulfilled by Jesus the Messiah. This will be accomplished by reading What the Old Testament Authors Really Cared About in its entirety and the majority of Dominion and Dynasty, as well as by first-hand study of some of the key biblical passages throughout the Old Testament. Please note: This course assumes the completion of Old Testament Survey I: A Christ-Centered Approach to Studying Jesus’ Bible. It is not recommended for students to take this course without first completing Part 1 of the curriculum. Part 1 covers Genesis–2 Kings (Law and Former Prophets), while this curriculum covers Jeremiah–2 Chronicles (Latter Prophets and Writings). • Objectives This course is designed to accomplish specific objectives. A student successfully completing this course should be able to: ▷ Articulate the flow of redemptive history from Genesis–2 Chronicles. ▷ Explain the central message of the books Jeremiah–2 Chronicles. ▷ Explain how each book contributes to the overall message of the Bible. syllabus 1 ▷ Understand how key biblical passages from the Old Testament fit into the storyline of redemptive history. Every lesson will compel the student to read and meditate on the Word. Our desire is to encourage students to be Bereans (cf. Acts 17:11). ▷ Understand how the entire Old Testament points to, prepares the way for, and is fulfilled by Jesus the Messiah. ▷ Discuss and apply the biblical truth that is presented in the curriculum to his/her own life. ▷ Magnify the worth of God in a more meaningful and personal way by treasuring him in their heart above all else. We recognize that this, the ultimate objective of the course, is impossible apart from the grace of God in the working of the Holy Spirit, who exalts the risen Lord, Jesus Christ. • Required books (Textbooks) ▷ An English version of the Bible (all quotes in this curriculum will come from the English Standard Version [ESV] unless otherwise noted). ▷ Jason DeRouchie, ed., What the Old Testament Authors Really Cared About (Grand Rapids: Kregel Academic & Professional, 2013). (abbreviated: WOTARCA) ▷ Stephen Dempster, Dominion and Dynasty: A Theology of the Hebrew Bible (Downers Grove: InterVarsity Press, 2003). (abbreviated: DD) • Requirements Students are expected to prepare for Lessons 2-12 by completing the lesson pages in a sequential order. Therefore, for each lesson a student should read the Introduction and the Lesson Objectives. Then the student should read the remainder of the lesson, answer the 20 questions contained therein, and complete all the required reading and the integrative assignment. The student may then review the discussion questions and record their own discussion question(s). Each lesson’s workload has been divided into five daily assignments for the convenience of the student. Though not required, a student may choose to read the book of the Bible that corresponds to each week’s lesson. Another option is to read only the “Key Chapters for Bible Reading” that correspond to each week’s lesson (~1–2 Chs./ day). These may be found in Appendix A. Students will pass this course if they attend at least 10 class sessions and complete all the assignments. What we now call the Old Testament was the only Bible Jesus and the apostles ever read or preached from, and it was this body of Scripture that Paul said is breathed out by God and profitable for believers living under the new covenant (Romans 15:4; 2 Timothy 3:15–17). The primary reason the Old Testament is so important is because it speaks about Jesus and his kingdom. In fact, this message comprised the majority of Jesus’ teaching after his resurrection (Luke 24:24–27, 44–47; Acts 1:1–3) and it was also the central message of Paul’s preaching during the apostolic era (Acts 26:22–23; 28:23, 30–31). The kingdom of God is one of the central themes in all of Scripture and this curriculum follows its progression through redemptive history. Old Testament Survey 1: A Christ-Centered Approach to Studying Jesus’ Bible followed its development from Genesis through 2 Kings; this curriculum, Old Testament Survey 2: A Christ-Centered Approach to Studying Jesus’ Bible continues surveying the kingdom of God through the rest of the Old Testament (Jeremiah–Chronicles). • Lesson Objectives After completing this lesson, the student should be able to ▷ summarize the redemptive storyline from Genesis–2 Kings. ▷ understand the context for the next section of the Hebrew Bible: the Latter Prophets. Review of Law and Former Prophets and Intro to Latter Prophets 5 6 Old Testament Survey II • Study Guide Genesis–2 Kings Before launching into the latter half of the Tanakh (which, you’ll remember from Old Testament Survey 1, is the Jewish ordering of the Old Testament books, comprised of the Law, the Prophets, and the Writings), it is helpful to recall God’s story of redemption that took place in the first half. The Pattern of the Kingdom (Genesis 1–2): In the beginning, God created the world and everything in it. As creator, God necessarily is King and therefore he sets the rules. The most significant part of his creation was mankind, whom he created in his image to rule over the world, reflecting God’s glory for all to see and worship him as a result. When God’s people dwelt in God’s land under God’s rule, then blessing abounded and God’s kingdom flourished. This is what the Bible calls shalom, and it can only take place in the context of a covenant relationship in which all members (God, people, land) function the way God intends. In the beginning, shalom abounded and everything was exactly the way it was supposed to be. Genesis 1:31 31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. 1. In your opinion, what is the most striking feature of The Pattern of the Kingdom? Does the church today reflect The Pattern of the Kingdom? Why or why not? Review of Law and Former Prophets and Intro to Latter Prophets 7 The Perished Kingdom (Genesis 3–11): Soon after God created this perfect kingdom, mankind rebelled against his rule and the kingdom was dismantled, demonstrating that human autonomy produces only anarchy. When this covenantal relationship was broken, everything in the world went wrong. Shalom, which once characterized the world, was no longer the dominant feature; sin, death, and curse was. Genesis 6:6 6 Yahweh saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 2. If the rebellion of God’s people against God’s authority caused the kingdom to fall, what will cause the kingdom to be re-established? Who do you think is capable of this? What promise did God give in Genesis 3:15 that provided hope that the kingdom would one day be restored? The Promised Kingdom (Genesis 12–50): God set out to make things right.

Yates, Ph.D. Introduction Timothy Polk has noted, “Nothing distinguishes the book of Jeremiah from earlier works of prophecy quite so much as the attention it devotes to the person of the prophet and the prominence it accords the prophetic ‘I’, and few things receive more scholarly comment.”1 More than simply providing a biographical or psychological portrait of the prophet, the book presents Jeremiah as a theological symbol who embodies in his person the word of Yahweh and the office of prophet. 2 In fact, the figure of Jeremiah is so central that a theology of the book of Jeremiah “cannot be formulated without taking into account the person of the prophet, as the book presents him.”3 The purpose of this study is to explore how Jeremiah the person functions as a theological symbol and what these motifs contribute to the overall theology of the book of Jeremiah.

    751 It is diffi cult to speak about Jeremiah without comparing him to Isaiah. It might be wrong to center everything on the differences between their reactions to God’s call, namely, Isaiah’s enthusiasm (Is 6:8) as opposed to Jeremiah’s fear (Jer 1:6). It might have been only a question of their different temperaments. Their respec- tive vocation and mission should be complementary, both in terms of what refers to their lives and writings and to the infl uence that both of them were going to exercise among believers. Isaiah is the prophecy while Jeremiah is the prophet. The two faces of prophet- ism complement each other and they are both equally necessary to reorient history. Isaiah represents the message to which people will always need to refer in order to reaffi rm their faith. Jeremiah is the ever present example of the suffering of human beings when God bursts into their lives. There is no room, therefore, for a sentimental view of a young, peaceful and defenseless Jeremiah who suffered in silence from the wickedness of his persecu- tors. There were hints of violence in the prophet (11:20-23). In spite of the fact that he passed into history because of his own sufferings, Jeremiah was not always the victim of the calamities that he had announced. In his fi rst announcement, Jeremiah said that God had given him authority to uproot and to destroy, to build and to plant, specifying that the mission that had been entrusted to him encompassed not only his small country but “the nations.” The magnitude to such a task assigned to a man without credentials might surprise us; yet it is where the fi nger of God does appear.

    Handout: Jeremiah Lesson 6 In Jeremiah 9:12-13, in answer to Jeremiah’s three questions in 9:11, Yahweh gives three reasons why He has ordained destruction and exile for the citizens of Judah and Jerusalem: 1. The people abandoned the Law of His covenant. 2. They rebelled against Him through a desire to forge their own destinies. 3. They adopted the worship of the Baals (false gods). Baal means “owner” and by extension “lord” or “master” in the Northwest Semitic languages spoken in the Levant. A concubine called the man who owned her “my baal,” but a married woman called her husband “my man” (see Hos 2:18/16). Baal was the honorific title for the god of storms (rain), and fertility who became the principal god in the Canaanite pantheon. Every pagan city that worshipped Baal had its own concept of the false god and expressed devotion to Baal in various forms of worship since there was no central religious authority. The title “Yahweh Sabaoth,” “Yahweh of the Hosts (angelic army)” is used more frequently as Jeremiah’s oracles continue (9:6, 14, 16; 10:16). “Sabaoth” is the transliteration of the Hebrew word tsebha’oth, meaning “hosts,” “armies.” It designates Yahweh as commander of the armies of the angelic host who controls the destiny of Heaven and earth and the defender of His faithful covenant people against all enemies and also Yahweh who brings judgment as in verses 14-15. 9:14 So Yahweh Sabaoth, the God of Israel, says this, “Now I shall give this people wormwood to eat and poisoned water to drink.” Yahweh’s concluding oracle in this section moves from indictment (verses 12-13) to judgment (verse14-15).

Biblical Prophecy, the Prophet Jeremiah and His Book In this short article, I will deal with a simple matter, namely, who wrote the book of Jeremiah, one of the major prophetic books in the Bible. As is often the case, such a straightforward question has quite an intricate answer. However, before proceeding, given the specificity of the topic (many, I am sure, will be familiar with the Bible as a collection of books, but fewer might be acquainted with the minutiae of the prophet Jeremiah and the book named after him), some introductory notes are necessary. Counting fifty-two chapters, the book of Jeremiah is the longest book ascribed by the biblical tradition to one of the so-called ‘writing prophets’.1 Traditionally, Jeremiah bears the title of ‘prophet’ (in Hebrew, nāvi), and Prophets (Hebrew, Nevi’im) is also the title for that part of the Bible that goes from the book of Joshua to that of Malachi. As a prophet, Jeremiah acts as a mediator between the divine and the humane spheres,2 and, although Hebrew prophets are sometimes involved in the prediction of future things, they are not merely foretellers.

    Jeremiah Chapter 2 Continued Jeremiah 2:19 "Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that [it is] an evil [thing] and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear [is] not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts." “Backslidings”: Jeremiah saw a whole generation of backslidden people who had fallen away from their godly moorings and walked away from God. One of the prominent words in the book is “backsliding” It is so easy to live surrounded by religious reminders yet ignore the truth to which they point. (Compare 3:6, 8, 11-12, 14, 22; 8:5; 31:22; 49:4; Isa. 57:17; Hosea 11:7; 14:4). For clarification of the meaning (see note on Prov. 14:14). We see from this, they will reap what they have sown. Their bondage will be bitter, because they have shown bitterness toward God in forsaking Him. God is very angry with them, because they did not fear Him and worship Him. This is like rebellion from a spoiled child. Fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom. He leaves no doubt at all who speaks this. It is the Lord GOD of hosts. Jeremiah 2:20 "For of old time I have broken thy yoke, [and] burst thy bands; and thou saidst, I will not transgress; when upon every high hill and under every green tree thou wanderest, playing the harlot." I.e. the bondage and tyranny that thou were under in old time in Egypt, as also different times besides, as appears through the Book of Judges.

    JEREMIAH, JUDGEMENT AND CREATION Hetty Lalleman Summary Building on a German publication by Helga Weippert, it is argued that the idea of creation can already be found in Jeremiah, not just in Isaiah 40–55. Jeremiah 4–5 has parallels in Genesis 1–2 as well as in Jeremiah 33, and there is insufficient ground to assume that Jeremiah 33 represents a post-Jeremiah development, as Weippert suggests. Jeremiah uses not only the covenant as a framework for his proclamation of judgement and doom but also creation. 1. Introduction In the moral life of ancient Israel the prophets played an important role.1 In the so-called Former Prophets we see them in action in warning kings when the Ten Commandments are trespassed, for example Nathan over against David, Elijah over against Ahab. The Latter Prophets confront the people time and again with the consequences of ignoring God’s commandments, the ‘stipulations’ provided in the framework of the covenant. As God’s covenant people, Israel is required to live according to the laws of the covenant made at Sinai. But it is not only the covenant which forms the framework used by the prophets to warn the people. Creation also played a role in the preaching of judgement and repentance and in the message of the prophets in general.   • What Is Biblical Prophecy?
    What is Biblical Prophecy? What Biblical Prophecy is NOT, and What It Really IS: Contrary to what many fundamentalist preachers or late-night radio hosts would have you believe, biblical prophecy is not primarily about “predicting the future” or finding clues in the Bible that correspond to people or events in our own day and age! The prophets of Ancient Israel did not look into some kind of crystal ball and see events happening thousands of years after their own lifetimes. The books they wrote do not contain hidden coded messages for people living in the 20th or 21st centuries! Rather, biblical prophets were mainly speaking to and writing for the people of their own time. They were challenging people of their own world, especially their political rulers, to remain faithful to God’s commandments and/or to repent and turn back to God if they had strayed. They were conveying messages from God, who had called or commissioned them, rather than speaking on their own initiative or authority. However, because the biblical prophets were transmitting messages on behalf of God (as Jews and Christians believe), much of what they wrote for their own time is clearly also relevant for people living in the modern world. The overall message of faith and repentance is timeless and applicable in all ages and cultures. To understand what biblical prophecy really is, let’s look more closely at the origins, definitions, and uses of some key biblical words. In the Hebrew Bible, the word for “prophet” is usually nabi’ (lit. “spokesperson”; used over 300 times!), while the related feminine noun nebi’ah (“prophetess”) occurs only rarely.

    The Doctrine of the Bible Hilo, Hawaii – June 2008 13 Part 4: Canonicity Canonicity refers to the character of a book that qualifies it for inclusion in the authoritative list of books comprising the Scriptures. Canon is derived from a Greek word meaning “rule” or “measurement” — a “straight rod” (see Ezekiel 42:16 for an example). Canon refers to the set of writings regarded as authentic and definitive for Scripture’s contents. Canonicity has the same basic meaning as the thought involved in talking about “the yardstick by which we determine what belongs in the Bible.” Determining the Canon of Scripture Nowhere in Scripture is there any suggestion that any standard outside of Scripture itself should be used to judge the canon. Deciding which books to include in the Bible should not be a human decision. No church or church council can create or validate the canon of Scripture — they merely give assent to it. The testimony of the Holy Spirit Himself is the only acceptable standard: . 1 Corinthians 2:4–11 – the Holy Spirit is the persuasive power behind the words of Scripture. 1 Thessalonians 1:5 – the Holy Spirit was the force behind the words of the apostles. Romans 8:15–16 – the Holy Spirit bears witness with (and to) our spirit with regard to the recognition of spiritual truth. Ephesians 2:20 – the testimony of the Spirit through His Word is superior to the testimony of the church because the church was established upon the foundation of the Word. Monday, June 10: Jeremiah 5 – Grace received... will it be given as well… God is angry with Judah and Israel and His list of grievances is long. This entire chapter is an indictment from beginning to end. It is difficult reading. It is like sitting in on a parent disciplining a child. It is also difficult for me to find a morsel for meditation. Only one verse seemed to hold a ray of light for my weary soul. In the middle of the chapter comes verse 18: “Yet even in those days,” declares the LORD, “I will not destroy you completely... a sliver of light in a dark and foreboding chapter. It is almost as if God is saying, ‘punishment is coming but it should be much worse’. A sliver of grace in a difficult confrontational moment. Still there it is, a moment of grace, I will not destroy you completely. At any moment God could rightfully squash me like bug for the sins I have committed or for the attitudes I hold or for the thoughts I have entertained. I deserve no good thing from the Lord. Still over and over again God grants me grace. A sliver here, a slice there, an enormous bucket at other times. Each sliver, slice or bucket bought and paid for by Jesus Christ as He hung on the cross.
