Grand Basel in Basel September 6–9 For over a century, the interaction between car, human, nature, archi- tecture, and design has shaped lifestyles, attitudes, and fashions. The modern concept of urbanity is a result of these dynamics. The automo- bile is, and will remain, an irreplaceable part of our cultural heritage. Showcasing a limited number of curated top-of-the-range automo- biles, Grand Basel is the ultimate show for automotive masterpieces with a global presence. Exhibits are selected according to diverse cri- teria, such as cultural meaning, conceptual innovation, outstanding condition, unique history, limited availability, and market value. Grand Basel is the world’s first and only show to present the automobile as a multi-dimensional cultural asset. The show creates new perspectives, bringing together automobiles of the past, present, and future in an unrivalled, pioneering setting. Celebrating excellence in motion, Grand Basel is a completely new approach to presenting, discussing, and honoring the car and is to car aficionados what Art Basel is to art lov- ers. The inaugural edition, Grand Basel in Basel, will lead the way for upcoming shows in North America (Grand Basel in Miami Beach in February 2019) and Asia (Grand Basel in Hong Kong in May 2019). The

If you are looking for a half-day hike, you can also take the CabriO one way and hike the other way—either up to the top via several possible routes (4 h 45 min – 5 h 35 min) or from the top down to the base via several routes (3 h 15 min – 4 h 15 min). All of these hiking routes offer beautiful views over Stans, the valley of Engel- berg, and the canton of Obwalden. One-way tickets are half the price of round-trip tickets. Alternatively, you can take the CabriO up to the top of Stanserhorn and then hike to the neighboring villages of Wirzweli (2 h 30 min) or Wie- senberg (2 hours) by following well-marked paths of varying difficulty, all with spectacular views surrounded by grazing cows. Once at Wirz- weli or Wiesenberg, you can take a different gondola down to the village of Dallenwil, from where a short train ride will take you back to your starting point in Stans. Round-trip tickets from Stans to Stanserhorn (funicular + CabriO), with a hike to a neighboring village, a gondola down to Dallenwil, and train back to Stans will cost CHF 52 if you hike

SlowUp Basel–Dreiland September 16 A tradition that started in 2000 around the lake of Murten as part of the “Human-Powered Mobility” project at Expo.02, the slowUp has become a national event and a great way to discover an area without the use or presence of cars! The recipe is simple—take approximately 30 km of relatively flat roads in an attractive area, close them to motorized traf- fic for the day, and allow participants to discover and enjoy the region and a host of activities in a cheerful, safe, and car-free atmosphere. You can take your bicycle, inline skates, scooter, skateboard, wave board, or wheelchair, or just walk or jog along all or part of the route. Everyone is welcome to join, and participation is completely free! Near- ly half a million people participate each year in one of the 20 slowUps in Switzerland and neighboring areas. Basel hosts a slowUp each au- tumn, this year on Sunday, September 16. The slowUp Basel–Dreiland, as its name implies, takes place on a cir- cuit in the Dreiland (three-country) area, including Basel-Stadt, Ba- selland, Aargau, neighboring parts of Alsace in France, as well as the border towns of Germany. The 60 km of roads on the circuit, including highways and rural roads, will be closed to car traffic from 10:00–17:00. There will be first-aid stations, toilets, as well as many festive stops along the way where participants can get food, drinks, and free give- 3. The only downside is that it’s usually necessary to plan ahead. Getting a particular car in a particular location at a particular time might re- quire booking a few days in advance. Of course, if you usually shop on a specific day, that’s no problem—you can book weeks in advance. Just be sure to give yourself ample time. If you find you’re going to be late returning a car, you can often extend your reservation. However, if someone else has already booked it and you’re more than 5 minutes late, you’ll be looking at a CHF 50 fine.

Cost A 4-month trial subscription costs CHF 40, an annual subscription costs CHF 139, and a lifetime Mobility cooperative membership costs CHF 1000 (refundable if you discontinue use) plus CHF 250 administrative fees. English Comedy—Dave Fulton & Maff Brown September 6 The 13th year of international stand-up comedy club culture in Switzer- land begins with a dynamic Anglo-American comedy duo. Dave Fulton, who makes his fourth appearance here, is not afraid to pull punches in his observations, with a deceptively laid-back stage manner that disguises a raw aggression. It’s un-missable comedy from one of the most dynamic and innovative comedians on the comedy circuit. Fulton is joined by Maff Brown, who began performing stand-up comedy in November 2005 and is making his first appearance on an International Comedy Club tour. Brown is the founder and resident MC for Outside the Box and is respon- sible for bringing comedians such as Jimmy Carr, Lenny Henry, and Rob- in Williams to the club. He has done TV warm-up for ITV, BBC, and SKY and has written on BBC shows “Mock The Week” and “Shooting Stars.” Catch this fantastic line-up at the Alte Markthalle in Basel, just a few minutes’ walk from the Basel SBB.
