Archdiocese of Liverpool ARCHDIOCESE OF LIVERPOOL - HOLY WEEK LITURGY The Holy Family The Sacred Heart Platt Bridge Hindley Green THE PARISH BULLETIN SUNDAY 1ST APRIL 2012 – SUNDAY OF PALMS AND THE PASSION (B) Sunday 1st April 2012 Sunday of Palms and the Passion Sat. 5.30pm Sacred Heart Mass Marcus Reid Sun. 9.30am Sacred Heart Mass Eris Rawsthorne & Rita Hesketh Sun. 11.30am Holy Family Mass Ints. of Angela Thomas (sick) A REFLECTION BY ARCHBISHOP PATRICK: Sun. 3.00pm Holy Family Stations of the Cross & Benediction “Being Christian is not the result of an ethical choice or a lofty idea, MONDAY OF HOLY WEEK 2ND APRIL 2012 7.00pm Sacred Heart Mass Winifred Sherlock but the encounter with an event, with a person, which gives life a new horizon and a decisive direction.” TUESDAY OF HOLY WEEK 3RD APRIL 2012 9.15am Sacred Heart Mass Michael Mills “Those words from the beginning of Pope Benedict’s first Encyclical 10.00am Holy Family Mass Ints. of Cheryl Green Letter “Deus Caritas Est” (“God is Love”) describe what Lent is all WEDNESDAY OF HOLY WEEK 4TH APRIL 2012 about. Put simply: It leads us here, to Holy Week. 12 noon Sacred Heart Funeral Mass for Bernard Green 7.00pm Mass of Reconciliation at Saint Benedict’s Church, Hindley I find it helpful sometimes not to use the usual titles – Maundy Thursday; Good Friday; Easter Sunday – but their titles from Latin: Thursday within the Supper of the Lord; Friday within the Passion of the Lord; Sunday within the Resurrection of the Lord. This explains TTHE EASTER TRIDUUM LITURGYT why, as we moved towards the end of Lent, the Gospel according to Saint John has been our guide. MAUNDY THURSDAY 5TH APRIL 2012 8.00pm (Sacred Heart) Mass of the Lord’s Supper For Saint John’s Gospel teaches: the hour of Our Lord’s glory is followed by Watching at the Altar of Repose until Night Prayer at 10.30pm Calvary, the hour when his Mother takes her stand at his side; the GOOD FRIDAY 6TH APRIL 2012 (A Day of Fasting & Abstinence) hour when, lifted up from the earth, he draws all to himself; the 12 noon (Sacred Heart) Stations of the Cross hour when from his pierced side flow the waters of the Holy Spirit to 3.00pm (Holy Family) Solemn Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion renew the face of the earth. And that is the second teaching of Saint HOLY SATURDAY 7TH APRIL 2012 John: this is for us: it is a story which shall become our own: children 11.00am ( Holy Family) Office of Readings and Morning Prayer of God in the Only-begotten Son: light and life through and with and 8.00pm (Sacred Heart) Vigil & First Mass of Easter in him. • Billinge History Society As Stated in Its Constitution, Are
The objectives of Billinge History Society as stated in its constitution, are To investigate, compile, preserve and present the History of Billinge for the education and gratification of present and future generations of the village, its surrounding municipalities and beyond. To promote interest in and maintain appreciation of the History of Billinge, its buildings and immediate environment, by whatever means are within the capabilities of the Billinge History Society. To publish the History of Billinge in printed and electronic formats so that all and any interested parties have easy and unrestricted access to it. * This book is an attempt to abide by those objectives. It has been a huge community effort. Six people donated the bulk of the written text; several others have also made written contributions, as the many the appendixes clearly demonstrate. The photographs that illustrate this book all have their origins with Billinge families. We thank everyone who has donated photographs for making them available. So far we have over six hundred preserved for future generations. Most of the information in this book was obtained from the older generation who still retain it. We are indebted to those who had the patience to speak to us and pass on their knowledge. Mrs Ethel Smith has played the major role in this regard. Without her, much of what is here recorded would have been lost forever. All the written text and a great many more photographs than are contained in this book, can be viewed and downloaded from our websites at www.billinge-history.com and www.billinge-history.co.uk, which contain our email address and phone number.

Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council Election Results 1973-2012 Colin Rallings and Michael Thrasher The Elections Centre Plymouth University The information contained in this report has been obtained from a number of sources. Election results from the immediate post-reorganisation period were painstakingly collected by Alan Willis largely, although not exclusively, from local newspaper reports. From the mid- 1980s onwards the results have been obtained from each local authority by the Elections Centre. The data are stored in a database designed by Lawrence Ware and maintained by Brian Cheal and others at Plymouth University. Despite our best efforts some information remains elusive whilst we accept that some errors are likely to remain. Notice of any mistakes should be sent to [email protected]. The results sequence can be kept up to date by purchasing copies of the annual Local Elections Handbook, details of which can be obtained by contacting the email address above. Front cover: the graph shows the distribution of percentage vote shares over the period covered by the results. The lines reflect the colours traditionally used by the three main parties. The grey line is the share obtained by Independent candidates while the purple line groups together the vote shares for all other parties. Rear cover: the top graph shows the percentage share of council seats for the main parties as well as those won by Independents and other parties. The lines take account of any by- election changes (but not those resulting from elected councillors switching party allegiance) as well as the transfers of seats during the main round of local election.

  • Royal Visits to Wigan, 1873-2005
Wigan Archives & Local Studies Royal Visits to Wigan, 1873-2005 The following index provides an account of the visits made to the Wigan area by members of the Royal Family, 1873- 2005. The accompanying spreadsheet gives further detailed information on dates and sources, together with details of press reports of the visits made. This index was gratefully produced by Vic Rawlinson, Wigan Local Studies volunteer, from original sources held by Wigan Archives and Local Studies. Wednesday 4th June 1873 The Prince and Princess of Wales In January 1873 enquiries were made regarding the possibility of a royal visit to Wigan for the occasion of the official opening of the new Wigan Infirmary. Advice was received that unfortunately Her Majesty Queen Victoria would not be able to attend as had been hoped, but this was promptly followed by confirmation that the Prince of Wales had accepted the invitation. The arrangements were that the Prince and the Princess would be staying at Haigh Hall as the guests of the Earl & Countess of Crawford and Balcarres, whilst they were in the locality, they would be combining the visit to Wigan with the opening of a new Town Hall in Bolton and also to the unveiling of a statue in Southport dedicated to a Dr. Chadwick who had been a benefactor to that town. The Royal couple arrived at North Western Station by rail on Tuesday 3rd. June and proceeded to Haigh Hall where a formal reception was held. The following day the official party made their way to the Infirmary, leaving Haigh plantations via the Whelly gates.
