2011 Football Media Guide.Indd SHIRK FIELDat Musselman Stadium 1 23 4 5 6 Photos 1-6 track the evolution of Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium from natural grass to the state-of-the-art artifi cial surface pictured below. Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium State-of-the-art artifi cial turf was installed at Musselman Stadium prior to the 2003 season thanks to the generosity of Richard D. Shirk ’67, starting quarterback of the 1966 squad that won the Lambert Cup as the top College Division program in the East. Musselman Stadium retained its long-time name, but the fi eld itself was named in recognition of the Shirk Family Foundation’s gift. “Artifi cial turf returns Musselman Stadium to the status of an elite venue at the NCAA Division III level,” said Director of Athletics David Wright. In December 2009, Shirk Field had its artifi cial turf resurfaced for the fi rst time. The former in-fi ll synthetic grass surface called AstroPlay was replaced by a DuraSpine Monofi lament Turf System created by FieldTurf, which manufactures the playing surface for numerous teams in the National Football League. Shirk Field is shared by the Bullets football, fi eld hockey, and men’s lacrosse teams. In the spring of 2010, men’s lacrosse became the fi rst team to compete on the new surface, which opened to rave reviews by players and fans alike for its lush cushioning and stunning graph- ics. Shirk – now the retired president and chief executive offi cer of Cerule- an Companies, Inc., parent of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia – was a two-year football letterwinner. As a junior in 1965, he was a starting defensive back as well as the backup for 1985 Hall of Athletic Honor inductee and future NFL quar- terback Jim Ward ’66. The next season, Shirk was one of three team captains who led the Bullets to a 7-2 record and the region’s top team honor. He was also a starting catcher on the Bullets baseball team. Dr. Cynthia Frisby Dr. Jeannette Porter Dr. Angela Hull Professor Tanya Heath DEDICATION This thesis is dedicated to my loving and devoted parents. I just know my purpose in life is to be your daughter and I hope I’ve made you proud. I am incredibly lucky to be your only child. This is also for my grandparents, who all would have been so proud of me in this moment but are no longer with us, either physically or cognitively. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The completion of this thesis would not be possible without several people. I would first like to thank Dr. Cynthia Frisby for guiding me through this thesis writing process as the chair to my committee. As the resident sports queen of the journalism faculty and someone who originally encouraged me to obtain my Masters, it only made sense that she be a big part of my graduate studies.

9781405177658_4_001.qxd 1/14/10 13:51 Page 1 Fight Fiercely Harvard and Yale Create the First Great Football Rivalry Gentlemen, you are now going to play football against Harvard. Never again in your life will you do anything as important. (Yale Coach Tad Jones, November 1923) When he arrived on the Harvard campus in the fall of 1876, 18-year-old Theodore Roosevelt would have given most anything to become a member of the football team. But he was still a gangly youngster whose physical development had been slowed by childhood illnesses. The vigor- ous and robust man – cowboy, military hero, and outdoorsman – that Americans would admire as their 26th president had yet to emerge. Slender and awkward, slow afoot, and afflicted with severe myopia that required eyeglasses, young Roosevelt was definitely not football material. That November, however, he accompanied classmates to New Haven to cheer on the Crimson in the second football game ever played against Yale. What he witnessed was a hard-fought game, resembling English rugby, that was dominated by the Blues. Keenly disappointed by the loss, he wrote his parents, “I am sorry to say we were beaten, principally because our opponents played very foul.” Perhaps memories of that game – when the Yale men “played very foul” – were in the back of his mind in 1905, when he summoned the football coaches from Harvard, Yale, and Princeton – college football’s indisputable “Big Three” at the time – to the White House to discuss the issue of excessiveCOPYRIGHTED violence that had contributed MATERIAL to innumerable injuries and several deaths.
