  • The Water Margin Podcast. This Is Episode 28. Last Time, Chao Gai
Welcome to the Water Margin Podcast. This is episode 28. Last time, Chao Gai and his six sworn brothers were on the lam after their heist came to light. They slaughtered almost every last one of a 500-men government force sent to arrest them. Then, they fled to the bandit stronghold on Liangshan, hoping to find refuge there, just like Lin Chong the Panther Head did after his run-ins with the law. And just like Lin Chong, they had to deal with the two-faced antics of the bandit leader, Wang Lun, who jealously hoarded his power and position against any newcomers who might overshadow him. As we resume our narrative, Lin Chong was paying a visit to Chao Gai and friends, and Wu Yong, the smart one among Chao Gai’s entourage, had just said that they should leave instead of waiting for Wang Lun to kick them out. “Heroes, please do not harbor such thoughts,” Lin Chong told them. “I know what must be done. I was just worried that you all might leave. That’s why I came so early to talk to you. Let’s see how he treats you today. If he says the right things, unlike yesterday, then it’s fine. But if he says so much as one wrong word today, I’ll take care of it.” “Chieftain, we are extremely grateful for your immense kindness!” Chao Gai said. But Wu Yong kept up his charade a little longer, saying, “How can we allow Chieftain Lin to quarrel with his brothers because of us? If they’ll have us, then we can stay.

  • The Characteristics of Heroes Portrait in Water Margin
2017 4th International Conference on Advanced Education and Management (ICAEM 2017) ISBN: 978-1-60595-519-3 The Characteristics of Heroes Portrait in Water Margin Ran WEIa, Hui YUb and Zhe-Jia TANGc School of Humanities and Social Sciences, China Jiliang University, Hangzhou, China [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Keywords: The Water Margin, Hero, Self-Value, Characteristics. Abstract. Relative to the heroism of orthodox “saving” work in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the heroes portrait in Water Margin is deeper affected by townsfolk’s ideas, tends to self-centered and maximize to pursuit the interest of the spirit and material, even has a new phenomenon that in order to achieve self-worth by any means. The heroes portrait in Water Margin presents the new characteristics which goes against the traditional concept of hero. Introduction Although the figures written in Water Margin [1] have many controversial in history, some thinks they were heroes with loyalty, and others think they were bandits Rebels. However, there was no doubt that the Leong's Legends were respected as heroes for a long time. The Water Margin and the Romance of the Three Kingdoms have been carved as Hero spectrum in the Ming dynasty. Yang Minglang commented in the preface of Hero spectrum, “why they were called as heroes in The Water Margin and the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the answer was the heroes in Water Margin created by the Liangshan’s geographic features and the heroes in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms created by the times.” [2] Nevertheless, the heroes created in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms were all about the dominant class.

  • Outlaws-029 Grateful
Welcome to the Water Margin Podcast. This is episode 29. Last time, Chao Gai and company found much more than a refuge on Liangshan, thanks to Lin Chong finally getting fed up with the two-faced antics of the bandit leader Wang Lun. One knife thrust to the heart, one severed head, and many rounds of polite back-and-forths later, Chao Gai found himself the new leader, ushering in a golden age for Liangshan, whatever that means for a group of bandits. The first big thing on the to-do list in this new golden age was to repel an attack by a government fleet since, oh yeah, we’re still on the lam for that heist we pulled. The fleet, led by a district garrison commander named Huang (2) An (1), advanced on the marsh around Liangshan, but soon ran into a trap. Seeing the situation go south, Huang An hopped onto a fast boat and tried to flee. But as he was rowing through the reeds, he was met by a small boat. On the boat stood Liu Tang, the Red-Haired Devil. Reaching out with a long hook, Liu Tang grabbed hold of Huang An’s boat and leaped onto it. Before Huang An could do anything, Liu Tang had him by the waist and warned him to not struggle if he wanted to live. Meanwhile, among Huang An’s men, those who could swim jumped into the water, where most of them were killed by arrows. And those who did not dare to jump into the water were captured alive along with their boats.

Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT "Water Margin" is the essence of wisdom in Chinese history. With 108 heroes in Liangshan as the main line, this book describes the social outlook and human sentiments of the Northern Song Dynasty, and portrays the loyalty and cunning among people. This book is mainly on the stories among men. At the same time, a series of bright female images have been created throughout the book, making the conflicts in the book constant. "There is no conflict, there is no literature". These female images not only push this literary masterpiece to the climax of ups and downs, but also make the work full of vivid details. This paper will mainly analyze the two female images of Jin Cuilian and Yan Poxi, and discuss the causes behind the shaping of female images/fate, as well as the reference significance for women today. Keywords: "Water Margin", Female image, Symbol, Birth of body, Birth of spirit. 1. INTRODUCTION "Water Margin" to a certain extent. • The Water Margin Podcast. This Is Episode 24. Last Time, Yang Zhi
Welcome to the Water Margin Podcast. This is episode 24. Last time, Yang Zhi was escorting a convoy of birthday presents to the capital when they stopped to rest on Yellow Earth Ridge. They were soon joined by a group of seven date merchants, and then by a wine peddler with two buckets of wine. Yang Zhi refused to let his men buy any of the wine, out of fear that it might be drugged. The date merchants, meanwhile, had no such qualms and emptied one bucket and even stole a sip from the other bucket. Seeing that they were just fine, Yang Zhi relented and allowed his men to drink the other bucket, and he had half a ladle himself. But soon things became less than fine. Before long, Yang Zhi and his whole convoy found themselves lying on the ground, fully conscious but unable to move, watching helplessly as the seven date merchants absconded with their precious cargo. So as I’m sure you can guess by now, the seven date merchants were the seven heroes who had plotted to hijack this convoy an episode earlier: Chao Gai, the ringleader; Wu Yong, the brains of the operation; Gongsun Sheng, the Daoist priest; Liu Tang, the Red-Haired Devil; and the three Ruan brothers. And the wine peddler? That was Bai Sheng, the Daylight Rat, an idler from the nearby village that Chao Gai knew. So we know who they were. But how DID they do it? If this were a movie, this is where we would rewind the action and show you how the deed was done.

  • Outlaws 089: Gold
Welcome to the Water Margin Podcast. This is episode 89. Last time, the magnate Lu Junyi was captured by the bandits, who wanted him to be their leader. But he steadfastly refused. So, Song Jiang and company said ok, fine, but since you’re already here, how about you just stay a few more days with us since it’s SUCH an honor to meet you. A few days turned into a few weeks, which turned into almost three months before Lu Junyi was finally allowed to go home. But when he got home, he discovered that his steward Li Gu (4) had shacked up with his wife Lady Jia (3), and they turned him in to the authorities as an outlaw. Lu Junyi insisted that “No, I didn’t become an outlaw. I just stayed at their stronghold for 3 months being wined and dined every day and then being allowed to go on my way.” And everybody was like, umm, yeah sure. A few rounds of torture later, Lu Junyi had been forced to confess to being a bandit and got thrown in the dungeon. As we rejoin the narrative, the superintendent of the prison, Cai (4) Fu (2) the Iron Arm, had just been invited to a clandestine meeting in a tea shop with the treacherous steward Li Gu. “Steward Li, what do you want?” Cai Fu asked after they greeted each other. “One does not conceal the good or the bad,” Li Gu said. “You must know about my affairs. Tonight, I want you to finish him off.
