The week-long exhibit is one of the many events inaugurating the episcopal ministry of the new metropolitan-archbishop of Philadelphia Borys Gudziak, who will be enthroned Tuesday, June 4. Gennadiy Druzenko and iconographer Oleksandr Klymenko presented an informative lecture “Art of Volunteering; Volunteering Art” about the Icons on Ammo Boxes and the “Buy an Icon—Save a Life” initiative. (Photo: Teresa Siwak) These icons are written on ammo boxes brought from the combat zone in eastern Ukraine where a war between Ukraine and Russian backed separatists has been going for several years. The main idea of the Icons on Ammo Boxes project is the transformation of death (symbolized by ammo boxes) into life (traditionally symbolized by icons in Ukrainian culture). The goal, this victory of life over death happens not only on the figurative and symbolic level but also in reality through these icons on ammo- boxes.

OBITUARY OF THE MOST REVEREND RICHARD STEPHEN SEMINACK BISHOP OF THE UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC EPARCHY OF ST. NICHOLAS IN CHICAGO March 3, 1942-August 16, 2016 The Most Reverend Richard Stephen Seminack, fell asleep in the Lord, August 16, 2016 after a prolonged illness. At the time of his death, Bishop Seminack was serving as the fourth bishop of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of St. Nicholas in Chicago. Bishop Seminack was born on March 3, 1942 to Raymond and Anna Cwiek Seminack in Philadelphia, PA. His paternal grandparents emigrated from Ternopil, Ukraine while his maternal grandparents came from Peremyshil, Ukraine. The oldest of seven children, he attended St. Martin of Tours Catholic Elementary School and Father Judge May 25, 1967 priestly ordination of Deacon Richard Seminack at the Catholic High School in hands of Metropolitan Ambrose Senyshyn.

    Bidding Farewell to Archbishop and Metropolitan-Emeritus Stephen Sulyk (1924-2020) Bidding Farewell to Archbishop and Metropolitan-Emeritus Stephen Sulyk (1924-2020) With natural sadness but also with Paschal hope the Philadelphia Archeparchy bids farewell to Metropolitan-Emeritus Stephen Sulyk. As a priest and bishop,he was a dedicated minister of the Lord in the Archeparchy for 65 years since his priestly ordination in 1955. We thank God for his life and raise prayers of gratitude for his service. The coronavirus pandemic, to which evidently the Archbishop succumbed at the age of 95, does not allow us to come together for the funeral. Thus, we are called to unite in prayer and spirit from our homes. When the danger for our clergy and faithful passes we will celebrate a requiem in which all can participate. In the name of our deceased Metropolitan, I thank all the bishops, clergy, religious, and faithful that worked with him over the many decades of his service in America. He is grateful to all of you, as he himself expressed during the joyful, warm celebration of his 95th birthday in October held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. He appreciated the collegiality shown by Roman Catholic bishops, clergy and communities, as well as the fellowship shared with our Orthodox brothers and sisters. He valued the decades of cooperation with various community organizations. We are most grateful for the services and kindnesses rendered to the Metropolitan by Ukrainian and Roman Catholic chaplains, religious, and laypersons during the two decades of his retirement. Especially I would like to thank Carol and Michael Nunno for the genuine friendship and singular service that you offered to Archbishop Stephen.

    Pope Francis Appoints Most Rev. Borys Gudziak as new Metropolitan- Archbishop of the Ukrainian Archeparchy of Philadelphia On Monday, February 18th, 2019, the Vatican Information Service announced that the Holy Father has appointed Most Rev. Borys Gudziak as Archbishop of Philadelphia for Ukrainians and Metropolitan for the Ukrainian Catholic Church in USA and thus concurring with the recommendation of the appointment offered by the Synod of Ukrainian Catholic Bishops, which met in September of 2018 in Lviv, Ukraine. The Archeparchy of Philadelphia was declared by Pope Francis as “sede vacante” following the resignation of Most Rev. Stefan Soroka on April 16, 2018. Most Rev. Andriy Rabiy was named by Pope Francis as the Apostolic Administrator of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia until the appointment of the new Metropolitan- Archbishop. At the present time Most Rev. Borys Gudziak serves as the eparch of St. Volodymyr the Great Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy, which includes France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxemburg and Switzerland. He is the founder and president of the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, Ukraine. In addition, Archbishop Borys is the head of Department of External Church Relations of the Ukrainian Catholic Church.     June 12, 2015 Protocol Number: 96/15 S Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: The Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Saint Josaphat in Parma has had its finances audited by an outside accounting firm, Simic CPA & Co., since 2011, which produces the financial statements of the Eparchy. I am pleased to publish the latest financial statements, for the year 2014, on the Eparchy’s website to help the faithful gain a clear understanding of the Eparchy’s financial state. I am also publishing alongside the financial statements a letter from Father Steven Paliwoda, the Eparchy’s Financial Officer, to explain many items in the financial statements in detail. I encourage you to read Father Steven’s letter in conjunction with the financial statements. It is important for the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Saint Josaphat in Parma to be a good steward of the gifts entrusted to it, and transparent about its finances. Having our finances audited by an independent accounting firm, and publishing our financial statements online and sending them to all of our parishes, puts the Eparchy amongst the most financially transparent Catholic dioceses in the world. In the same way, it is also very important for each parish to be transparent in its finances and accountable to the faithful, who support the Church and for whom the Church exists to serve. I would like to make the following general observations about the financial state of the Eparchy. The Eparchy’s Financial Situation Continues to Improve, but is Still Precarious. During the years 2011-2013, the Eparchy paid about half of its debts.

Walter Pasicznyk Amidst the joyous exclamation of “Axios!” (He is Worthy!) by Bishop Richard Seminack as he vested the newly ordained priest, and to the acclamation of “Axios! Axios! Axios!” from the congregation, Rev. Walter Pasicznyk began his journey as a minister to the flock of Jesus Christ! The ordination of Rev. Walter Pasicznyk by Metropolitan-Archbishop Stefan was held at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Philadelphia, PA, on June 22, 2014. Among those who celebrated with Rev. Walter Pasicznyk were members of his family including his mother Mrs. Olympia Pasicznyk and Rev. Walter’s brother and three sisters.
