Kings Fans,

Round 8 sees the A and B-grades return to Haslam Oval to take on Unley Mercedes while the C-grade venture to Kingswood Oval. Last weekend was another round of losses to all three teams but we need to remain positive as the season is still in its early stages. This year is proving to be a challenge as we field young sides and contend with injuries but these aren’t excuses as we feel we should be competitive with any side that takes the field.

It is exactly one week now until our 2017 Kings Lunch with guest speaker . We have had a great number of people book tables and buy tickets however there are still places left. We stress that this event is open to anyone and everyone, all proceeds go back into the running of the Kings and we would appreciate your support. Tickets will remain on sale until next Wednesday the 31st of May, so please go to trybooking.com to purchase your ticket. You can find the trybooking link on the Kings Speech Facebook post or the email you received for this weeks edition.

27th of May, Round 8:

A- Grade vs Unley Mercedes at Haslam 2:15pm B-Grade vs Unley Mercedes at Haslam 12:15pm C- Grade vs Unley Mercedes at Kingswood Oval 2:15pm.

We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at any of our games this weekend.

Jack and Luke Co-Presidents.

ROUND 7 VS A GRADE REPORT Goal Kickers M. Falzon 4, J. Greeny, B. Wood, J. Pengelly, J. Rollins, H. Mason

Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 Best Players Old Ignatians 4.2-26 7.3-45 11.6-72 18.8-116 J. Pengelly, A. Jarvis, R. Marini, M. Falzon, S. Franklin Pembroke Kings 3.3-21 3.5-23 7.7-49 9.8-62

Quite simply, last Saturday was a disaster for the Kings, as all three sides were comprehensibly beaten by Old Ignatians.

As has been the case each week this season, there were multiple forced changes to the A-grade side but we entered the match with a great deal of confidence, having played well the week before.

Unfortunately, we got a brutal reminder that if you don’t bring your best effort and pressure every week in this competition then there are going to be tears.

Our best players for the day included Jaiden Pengelly, Alex Jarvis, Ryan Marini, Matthew Falzon and Sam Franklin, while Mitch Curnow, Ben Williams, Luke Davey and Charles Canny were others that competed for four quarters.

This week we are back at home against an Unley Mercedes Jets team that is in red-hot form. We’ve had a good week on the track so go into the clash confident that, with a more even spread of contributors, our best footy is good enough to get the chocolates.

BKings had another rough day out at park 25 number 3.

Starting with the negatives. Car parking at Iggies home oval has always been a problem. Anyone who has attended games in the past will know that the Insp-gang rock up half time (so everyone is on the oval or getting a snag), pile out of a small white corolla, kit up, ticket up & pile back into the corolla within minutes of arriving & netting a few K in fines. Sounds dodgy to me. Keen to avoid the Insp-gang, many hitched rides, caught the bus or like me walked a few extra Km. The scoreboard for BKings game was tiny & difficult to see so much so that I didn’t know where it was till mid way through the second quarter. Not that we needed a scoreboard to let us know what was happening.

The positives, we almost doubled last week’s score & had a respectful third quarter where we held Iggies to a couple of goals when they had the aid of a stiff breeze. The scoreboard was tiny so it was difficult to determine what the score was, now a positive.

Although for the most we were poor, the back line did again toil away all game & tried to stem the tide but there was just so much supply. Chief* was just that, trying his hardest to direct traffic, however when that inbound traffic is like a New Delhi roundabout, it was always going to be hard. Compatriots in the backline Steve Erwin** & Chucky2*** also had to deal with the constant supply to their respective forwards & did well to offer some rebound as well.

BKings have played the 4 top teams over the past 4 weeks & they have all been much better than us. We now play a team closer to us on the ladder in Unley Mercedes. Time to get some shots on goal & hopefully gain some of that much needed confidence that a win generates. Come on out to give the men a lift!

Another rough day at the office for the Kings; coming up against some very strong opposition in St Iggies.

It was a slightly disappointing effort considering how competitive we thought we would be - however during the game it was very much the opposite.

Iggies dominated the contest for most of the day, with patches of Kings footy looking reasonable. Whilst it was a solemn day for the Kings, one of the club’s young bloods managed to manufacture himself a breakout game. Honourable mention to Sam ‘Fev’ Carruthers, who was our most dangerous forward all day. The kid was slotting them from all angles, constantly beat his opponent to the contest and ended up with what could have been more than a modest 3. Nek minnit he’ll be chasing Juddy around, frothy in hand, searching for those pressure points. Keep up the good work Brendan.

Massive opportunity this week to get a win on the board against the struggling Unley Jets. We look forward to getting as many numbers out to Unley as possible!

-13- THE PEMBROKE KINGS PEMBROKE OLD SCHOLARS FOOTBALL CLUB IT’S GOOD TO BE GREEN 2017 pembrokekings.com.au Friday May 26th 2017 Round 8 - Unley Mercedes Home MILESTONE GAME Congratulations to Scotty ‘the Chief’ Fischer on achieving 100 games with the Pembroke Kings. It is a mighty effort and something to be very proud of. Particularly for Fishy, who has had more soft tissue injuries then anyone I know. The mode of injury has changed a lot over the years, back in the school days, when he had some spring in his step, he would often come off winded after flying 6 feet off the ground going for an impossible hanger whereas now it’s more lower body related, particularly the hamstring area. He assures us his pre-season routine of half marathon length road runs doesn’t contribute. He also hates seeing physios, regularly self-diagnosing himself with the use of his favourite saying; “Shell be right”. Fishy is a great team-mate and loyal friend. You would be hard pressed to find a better bloke to have a beer with. What makes this milestone even more special is the fact that Fishy went home to the Mallee to play for his local club ‘Lameroo’ for a season, taking them to a Grand Final appearance. He spoke about doing this for a number of years and stuck to his word when he said he would return to the Kings! Scotty is a fine player and a great asset to the team. He reads the play incredibly well, moves through traffic with ease and delivers silky precision passes. He possesses many of the qualities of the most highly skilled performer. His bushy beard, bald head and long-sleeve energy has enhanced his ‘cult figure’ status, making him a fan favourite. He is somewhat of a ‘mentor’ to the younger players, particularly Venkatesh (junior), who has taken a likening to Scotty, and who could blame him. It was extremely sad that Scott missed out on the A grade premiership last season as he has given so much to the club and the A grade over a number of years. Good luck today Scotty, both on the field and late on with Jug! Looking forward to the next 100 games of Fischer magic and many more Easter weekends in the Mallee.

Tucks

100 games hashim....Well done mate!! Would have to have the best set of hands at the club, partly due to the excessive kicking we used to do in the backyard. Tough as nails, except those little hamstrings. Bullet right leg with no left foot. Good bloke on but even better off the field. No one can say a bad thing about you, same can be said about your football career. You always put the team and your teammates first which is a quality many people don’t have. Although we haven’t played many games together for the kings I have fond memories of watching you play many of them. I hope we get a chance to play a few more together before we both hang the boots up and when u do hang them up the West Indies are still looking for a fast bowler. Get a kick Saturday, love Michael -14- THE PEMBROKE KINGS PEMBROKE OLD SCHOLARS FOOTBALL CLUB IT’S GOOD TO BE GREEN 2017 pembrokekings.com.au Friday May 26th 2017 Round 8 - Unley Mercedes Home

Big congratulations to Fishy who runs out for his hundredth this Saturday. Day 1 of year 10 I saw a bloke from Lameroo wandering round the quad and thought ‘ah- he must be here to drop his son off’- but no, it was the man himself, walking to class looking pretty much like he does today. Since then I’ve had the pleasure of calling him a close mate and teammate and boy is he great to have as both: his ability to read the play is typical of the country lads that just have that footy-sixth sense. However, it would have to be his skills that are the envy of teammates and opponents alike. By foot or hand, I always feel relaxed when Fishy has the pigskin in hand. A ridiculous amount of talent, held back only by a horrid run with soft tissue injuries (probably not helped by >8km runs on a Friday but anyway).

Fishy is an excellent all-round sportsman: equally adept scoring 100s with the willow, scoring birdies on the course, nailing targets with the rifle or lapping Tucker in a Phuket go-kart. However, there is one talent that has eluded him and that is the art of the hanger. Down at St Michael’s one day Fishy got stupidly high but cooked himself on the landing (emergency Ambulance and all) and I spent the rest of the game not knowing if my mate was still with us :/…fast forward to cricket season and it was a dodgy ticker that gave us all another scare. But we all got through it just keep him off Maso’s red bull.

I’m lucky to have travelled far away from Haslam with Fishy and seen him at his best (and worst- cops by far the harshest hangovers I’ve ever seen anyone deal with). From Byron Bay to a bonfire back in his native Mallee and late night beach raves in Thailand, Fishy is living proof that being a top bloke and always being up for a can and a chinwag will get you very far in life. Congratulations on the milestone mate- well deserved and good luck on Saturday/night.

Jarv

When you think about Scotty Fischer a few things come straight to mind; great bloke, nude melon and heavy beard. I think anyone who has met him would have similar first impressions but I have been lucky enough to spend a fair bit of time with Scotty over the years. We attended high school together, lived together, travelled together and play footy together.

At school he was the boarder with luscious dark hair and a penchant for relationships. He was one of the best blokes to share a beer with and to this day still is. At First 18 footy he was the bloke who tried to take impossible hangers on top of massive packs. Regrettably for Scotty, he needed to work on his landings and he inevitably came off second best. I think this is where his long list of injuries kick started.

As a house mate Scotty is second to none. He cleans, he cooks, he gardens, he does everything and he does it well. It quickly became clear that he was the perfect bloke to live with. You also learn pretty quickly that he can handle his drink that night but he certainly can’t handle it the next day. The Chief gets the worst hangovers I have ever seen. There were some Sundays where he left his room for bathroom visits only, not even being able to make it to the couch. Who can forget New Year’s just gone, down at Victor, when Fish had too many bubbles ringing in 2017. His hangover certainly did not impress the missus and she didn’t have much sympathy for the shell of a man that emerged the next morning. Yet he managed to quickly pack up his gear, with his head spinning, and be in the car by 9.30am to head back to Adelaide. He got 50m down the road before Harriet pulled over his ute for him to ‘get some air’. Turns out Smerd’s house is 50m down the road and he couldn’t hide from the lads out on the balcony.

Playing footy with Scotty has always been enjoyable. He is a skilful and reliable player. When his hamstrings are on his kicking is superb and you know he will hit his target. Just ask anyone out at the Lameroo Hawks, they benefitted from probably his best few years of footy to date. Unfortunately injuries have struck him down time and time again and have probably restricted him from playing as well as we know he can. Nonetheless he has achieved the 100 games milestone and has played plenty of sublime footy along the way.

Congratulations Fishy and best of luck Saturday, maybe bring back those hangers?

Name: Scott Fischer Nicknames: Chief, Chiefton and fishy Age: 27 Occupation: Furniture maker Guernsey Number: 18

Which AFL team do you follow? Bloody Richmond

On field goal for 2016? Winning a few more games would be nice

Off field goal for 2016? I wouldn’t mind growing some lushes locks like Venkha

Who will win the 2017 AFL Grand Final? Port Power

You play your 100th game for the Kings this weekend, congratulations! What does the milestone mean to you? Do you have a favourite game from the 99 so far? Its just another game really, no biggy! The two B grade finals up at athlestone stand out to me, love an underdog win!

You grew up on a farm outside of Lameroo and often find yourself back there helping out your parents or even playing some footy with the Lameroo Hawks. What is your favourite thing about being back on the farm? What were the main differences you found between country footy in the Mallee league and the SA Footy League? Yes, I am a true blue country boy who loves hopping in the john deere to plough up some paddocks or jump start the rusty ute to round up the sheep when I get the chance. My favourite thing about being back on the farm is the open space and a cold west end stubbie checking the crops. I played 3 seasons out at the Lameroo hawks under the legendary Rodney Rocket Maynard, who taught me a lot about footy and life. I guess the main difference between the two leagues is skill level and depth.

You have always been a big advocate for the long sleeve jumper, why is this? Do you believe in ‘long sleeve energy’ and have you seen its effects this year? What do you think of Luke Davey’s (illegal) long sleever he seems to wear even in the warmest conditions? I have been asking for years to get a long sleeved jumper for the club! Along comes the three time Magarey medallist Jimmy Allen who wants one and the powers that be (luke evens) order them in the next day! Cheers Jim! I’m all for Luke Davey wearing an illegal long sleever, there needs to be more fellas getting around it!

You have recently moved in with your lovely girlfriend Harriet, how are you finding living with the missus? We all know that the next step is getting down on one knee, how long will it be until you’re engaged, a couple of months? If not you, then who is your tip to be the next King to pop the question? Yes Harriet and I have moved in together, it seems to be going well although she might tell you otherwise. No, there wont be any engagement coming from us any time soon! There are a few that wouldn’t be far off though..... Alex Jarvis..... Charles Canny..... Sam Willis.....Alex Holbrook but if I had to put money on it I’d say Luke Evans

You and your brother have both been out at the Kings for the past two seasons, how is it having Michael around the club again? Who was the better footballer growing up? Who is mum Jane’s favourite? Who is more injury prone? Its been great having Michael out having a kick again, to come back after 7 seasons off due to injury shows he is pretty determined, although he isn’t the player he once was he shows the odd glimpse of what he was capable of. He definitely had me covered when growing up, I couldn’t catch him. The first child is always the favourite, so he is definitely Janes number 1!

Who are the best three Kings Players you’ve had the pleasure to play with? I’ve answered this question a few times so I will do the most under rated kings players..... 1. Matt Willis, has played 151 games and still hasn’t missed a target 2. Tom ‘Moisty’ Moir, hasn’t lost a one on one contest at the kings, is probably the only king to play every position on the ground in a season 3. Lucas Allen, runs all day and never complains about it!

If you could take one Kings team mate away with you on holiday who would it be and why? If it was an overseas holiday I would take Alex Jarvis because he tells me he is well cultured

What is your specialty meal to cook? Roast Pork

If you could appear in any reality TV show which would it be? The block

What is your dream holiday destination? Anywhere with snow

What is your dream job? Weather man

What is the coaches favourite saying? ”whenever walshy takes a mark, someone run past for the hands, he cant kick!”

Best AFL/SANFL/VFL player of all time? The crow with a moe Rodney Maynard

Who is your Doppelganger? No idea..... Hashim Amla

Which King is most likely to: - Take their top off at training? Catman - Snapchat you a photo of their dog? Not on snapchat, I heard neshy is pretty fond of his dog - Sing at Karaoke? Tom tucker Evans (I’ve got plenty of footage) - Be late to a game? Liam Duhne - Take a mid-season vacation? Michael Walshy (babymoon) sheesh
