Unexcused absences, irregular attendance (ORS339.065) and truancy may result in disciplinary action up to and including a citation and a fine for a class C violation (ORS 339.990). The school principal will determine if an absence is to be excused. Under Oregon Law (ORS 339.065), a principal may excuse an absence if it is caused by the pupil’s sickness, the sickness of an immediate family member when the student’s presence at home is necessary, or an emergency requiring the student’s absence; field trips or school approved activities; or medical or dental appointments. The principal may also excuse absences for other reasons where satisfactory arrangements are made in advance of the absence. Confirmation of appointments, illnesses or emergencies may be required. After a third medical/illness absence, a doctor’s note will be required. Prolonged absence could result in reduction of grades or loss of credit required for graduation. Students may not attend school or school functions when excluded for disciplinary reasons or when they or others in the home have a communicable disease. Only a qualified health official may authorize attendance for the latter. Attendance at Religious Instruction Upon application by a parent or student having attained the age of majority (18 years or older), a student may be excused from school to attend a weekday school giving religious instruction. This instruction shall not exceed two hours in any week for elementary students or exceed five hours in any week for secondary students. (ORS 339.420) 5 6 MEET OUR STAFF! Shelley Albrich, Visual Arts. Shelley has an MA in Integrating the Arts into Education from Gonzaga University. She has devoted her professional life to being an artist, and her artwork has been exhibited at several venues including the Springfield Museum and LCC. Ame Beard, Principal. Passionate about art, music, baking, plants, travel, and spending time with her family. As an active community member, Ame tries to find ways to bolster non-profits. Ame has an awesome husband, is a parent of four amazing children and one grandchild. Ame loves steampunk and often has a toke on her person to represent that passion. Jaymi Bucklew, Custodial. Jaymi has worked custodial for SPS since 2014. She is working on her degree in Art and has worked as a chef. Jenny Cathey, Special Ed. Jenny has degrees in Special Education and Biology. She’s worked in high school and at Hamlin Middle School 7 Emerald Crafton, Office Specialist. Emerald has worked for Springfield Public Schools for eleven years. She’s worked at all grade levels and in the district communications department. Emerald is almost never serious. Scott Crowell, Humanities. College Now Writing & Literature. Scott is a long-time teacher, with almost half of his career teaching Language Arts & Social Studies at A3. He has degrees in History, English, & Professional Writing as well as a Master’s in Teaching English. Krista Cummings, Registrar. Graduated from Humboldt State University with a degree in Sociology minor in Criminal Justice. After college she married her high school sweetheart and began employment as a Probation Officer for Humboldt Co. for 5 years until the birth of daughter and son. She became a stay at home mom for 15 years raising her children and had the opportunity to live in Spokane, Washington, Cochabamba, Bolivia, and Eugene, Oregon. She volunteered and worked for Churchill High School for 7 years prior to joining A3. Kari Davidson, Dance. “Dancing has been a part of my life since early elementary school. I trained at Colorado Ballet for over a decade and studied summers at Ballet West and Pacific Northwest Ballet on scholarship. In addition to studying modern dance at Middlebury College, I was a member of the Middlebury Dance Company and taught ballet classes to my peers.” 8 Eric Elligott, Educational Assistant/ Campus Monitor. Eric has a BA in English (Creative Writing) and Sociology/Anthropology from Denison University. He is passionate about his cat, Ella, and is active in the Eugene-area community theatre scene. Nissie Ellison, Humanities & Visual Arts. Nissie has been a part of A3 since its beginning. She has been a part of the planning and implementation from the git-go. While at A3, she has taught all levels and most topics in the Humanequeries series, but this year her focus is on Visual Arts. She will be teaching the CollegeNow Art History courses through LCC, drawing and Creative Literature Ryan Eustis, Math. “I strongly believe that math education helps students develop their reasoning skills and encourages them to think critically about the world. I think that the best learning takes place when students are discovering for themselves and working together as a team.” Elda Galvan, Spanish. Elda is a native speaker, is passionate about social justice and advised A3's multi cultural club for years. Elda has deep relationships with many staff members, parents and students. She enjoys spending time with family outside of school hours. 9 Justin Haines, Custodial. Justin studied Latin and other esoterica. He left the Shire six years ago upon reaching adulthood by Hobbit reckoning. Former driver of buses and taxis. Just enjoys pinball, science fiction, and spumoni. Andrew Hock, Dean of Students. Andy was the Theater Director at Thurston High from 2006-2013. He has a Theater Performance degree from Cornish and a Master’s in Teaching. Jared Mills, Media. Jared is an artist with eclectic experiences both in art and in the world. His art spans many genres and themes. His passion lies in helping students find their voice and their own art. Making the classroom the safest space possible is of the utmost importance. Kyle Mullen, Math. Kyle taught at McKay High School in the Salem area before he came to A3. He has been at A3 for several years. 10 Torrey Newhart, Vocal Music. Torrey has recorded on fifteen albums and performs live more than 150 times, annually. He is also an adjunct instructor at UO and LCC, and serves as the board president for the Willamette Jazz Society that operates Jim Olsen, Music. Jim was music director & composer/arranger for Eugene’s big band, “Swing Shift,” as well as an adjunct instructor in music at LCC. A professional musician since 1981, Jim has released 3 CDs of his original compositions. He has degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, UO, and Western Oregon University. Cody Rosenberg, Math. “My favorite color is purple. Ween is the greatest band on the planet and are the closest thing I have to a religion. I like to throw the frisbee around. Fishing and hiking are the jam. I drive a VW diesel but I prefer biking. I’m married to a beautiful woman and have two kids, 14 and 10, and a dog named Sam. I have a BA in film and video production.” Ariana Schwartz, Costume, Fashion and Textiles. Ariana has a BFA in Fibers from UO and an MFA in Theatrical Design from UT Austin. Over the past decade she has worked as designer in Oregon, Paris, and Bali. Ariana loves working with the talented and creative students and staff at A3! 11 Hope Shepherd, Internship and Testing Coordinator. Hope Shepherd has a BS in Sociology from the U of O, and has worked in public schools for the past twenty years. While working in education is one of her favorite jobs, she’s also been a tree planter, an organic seed farmer, and a co-owner/operator of a successful restaurant/music venue in Portland. She’s passionate about working on issues of social equity and justice, loves writing songs and poetry, and conversing about all manner of things. Wilson Sherk, Attendance and A3MC. Wilson taught PE for seven years at Curtis School in LA. He has a BA and MA in education from Cal. St. Univ. Northridge. He worked for 10 years in circulation at The Register Guard and visits National Parks each summer with his wife and son. Jill Smith, Health and PE. Jill has over 20 years of experience teaching K-12 Health and PE, as well as coaching. Her areas of focus are lifetime fitness and working with students who do not enjoy traditional PE style classes. Jill enjoys helping students become their own self-advocates for their physical and mental health by incorporating individual needs & styles, while creating a welcoming classroom for all. Jason Valley, HSC Lead Teacher. Jason’s education includes a BA in Drama from UC Irvine. He studied biology at San Francisco State University, and Brewing Sciences at UC Davis. He’s worked extensively in the brewing and biotechnology fields prior to receiving a Master’s in Teaching from Pacific University. 12 Melanie (Melz) Vetor, Humanities. Melz education includes a BA in Social Sciences and a Masters in Teaching, both from UO. She has taught middle & high school in Salem and Bethel School Districts. Melz and her wife have two kids, cats, dogs, and two Corollas.
