For forest insects, trade in live plants and transport of wood packaging material (WPM) are considered the most important pathways facilitating long-distance invasions. These two pathways as well as trade in frewood, logs, and processed wood are commonly associated with insect infestations, while “hitchhiking” insects can be moved on cargo, in the conveyances used for transport (e.g., containers, ships), or associated with international movement of passengers and mail. Once established in a new country, insects can spread domestically through all of the above pathways. Considerable national and international eforts have been made in recent years to reduce the risk of international movement of plant pests. International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPMs) No. 15 (WPM), 36 (plants for planting), and 39 (wood) are examples of phytosanitary standards that have been adopted by the International Plant Protection Convention to reduce risks of invasions of forest pests. The implementation of ISPMs by exporting countries is expected to reduce the arrival rate and establishments of new forest pests. However, many challenges remain to reduce pest transportation through international trade, given the ever-increasing volume of traded goods, variations in quarantine procedures between countries, and rapid changes in distribution networks. -

Episode 711, Story 1: Stalag 17 Portrait Eduardo: Our first story looks at a portrait made by an American POW in a World War Two German prison camp. 1943, as American air attacks against Germany increase; the Nazis move the growing number of captured American airmen into prisoner of war camps, called Stalags. Over 4,000 airmen ended up in Stalag 17-b, just outside of Krems, Austria, in barracks made for 240 men. How did these men survive the deprivation and hardships of one of the most infamous prisoner of war camps of the Nazi regime? 65 years after her father George Silva became a prisoner of war, Gloria Mack of Tempe, Arizona has this portrait of him drawn by another POW while they were both prisoners in Stalag 17-b. Gloria: I thought what a beautiful thing to come out of the middle of a prison camp. Eduardo: Hi, I’m Eduardo Pagan from History Detectives. Gloria: Oh, it’s nice to meet you. TRIAL Technology in the Courtroom Reflections Summation: The Last Hurdle Gregory S. Cusimano t’s three o’clock in the morning and you’re not asleep. Your heart is racing and your eyes Iare wide open. “I’ve got to get some sleep – there’s no way I’ll ever get through tomorrow if I don’t get some rest,” you say to yourself. You can’t seem to stop the waves of random thoughts. Up to now there has been no clear winner in the trial. You can see that the jury is confused. The trial has been a real tug-of-war. Each side has bee pulled to the brink of disaster, but neither has gone over the edge. The victor is yet to be decided. It all rides on your closing argument. Can you breathe life into these well-worn facts? Can you make the jurors understand? Can you move them to feel the loss your clients have endured? Can you provide the jurors with what it takes to right this wrong? It’s all up to you. The responsibility is overwhelming. All the time, all the work, all the energy, the very future of the family you’ve grown to love depends on the words you choose and how you present them. You think of the first time the family walked into your office. You didn’t know their children, Johnny and Laura, their dreams, their losses. Well, they aren’t just clients now. Your life has become so entwined with theirs that it’s hard to tell where their lives stop and yours begins. -

2 To Be Somebody: Ambition and the Desire to Be Different The context for difference This chapter aims to identify some of the bands that enjoyed chart success during the late 1970s and ’80s and identify their artistic traits by means of conversations with band members and those close to the bands. This chapter does not claim to be a definitive account or an inclusive list of innovative bands but merely a viewpoint from some of the individuals who were present at the time and involved in music, creativity and youth culture. Some of these individuals were in the eye of the storm while others were more on the periphery. However, common themes emerge and testify to the Scouse resilience identified in the previous chapter. Also, identifying objective truth is a difficult task, as one band member will often have a view of his band’s history that conflicts with that of other members of the same band. As such, it is acknowledged that this chapter presents only selective viewpoints. Trying something new: In what ways were the Liverpool bands creative and different? ‘Liverpool has always made me brave, choice-wise. It was never a city that criticized anyone for taking a chance.’ David Morrissey1 In terms of creativity, the theory underpinning this book which was stated in Chapter 1 is that successful Liverpool bands in the 1980s were different from each other and did not attempt to follow the latest local or national pop music trends. None of the bands interviewed falls into the categories of punk, disco or New Romantic, which were popular trends at the time.
