Santa María 0104, Providencia, Santiago, Chile Abstract The Denaro Complex, part of the Madre de Dios Terrane is composed of metamorphosed pillow basalts, metahyaloclastites, banded metalliferous and radiolarian metacherts, metapelites and redeposited calcareous metasandstones. The basaltic rocks show primary textures, minerals and structures. They are foliated especially in the vicinities of thrust faults, interpreted to have developed during the accretion of the terrane to the Gondwana margin. Composition of relic primary augite and chromite crystals plots into the MORB field of tectonic discriminant diagrams, as do the analyses of whole rock geochemistry, which indicates that these rocks are akin to volcanic rocks erupted along a constructive plate margin (N- and E-type MORBs), probably in a spreading axis-centered oceanic plateau or ridge. The metamorphic assemblages of pumpellyite–actinolite facies bear witness of metamorphism in a frontal accretionary wedge at elevated P and low T conditions, probably related to the Late Triassic–Early Jurassic Chonide event, which has been recognized elsewhere in the Patagonian Andes. Troncoso* Universidad Nacional de Buenos Aires Buenos Aires - Argentina Resumen: En el año 2003 la Quebrada de Humahuaca (Jujuy, Argentina) recibió la distinción de la UNESCO como Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Esta designación colocó al destino en un lugar destacado en el conjunto de los destinos turísticos argentinos. Pero, ¿quiénes, cómo y por qué impulsaron el proceso orientado a alcanzar la distinción para la Quebrada? y ¿qué relación guarda esta designación con la dinámica turística en el lugar? Este trabajo tiene como objetivo indagar en los vínculos que se establecen entre el logro del reconocimiento patrimonial de la Quebrada de Humahuaca y la presencia del turismo en el lugar, teniendo en cuenta el accionar del poder político provincial, impulsor de la inclusión de la Quebrada en la lista de Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO. The Quebrada of Humauaca, Jujuy - Argentina. In 2003 Quebrada de Humahuaca (Jujuy, Argentina) was included in the World Heritage List created by UNESCO. The new acquired status puts this place among most well-known tourist destinations in Argentina. But, who has led the process to get the distinction? Why and how has they done it? And which is the relationship between this new status earned and the tourist dynamics of the Quebrada de Humahuaca? The aim of this article is to examine the relationship between patrimonialization of Quebrada de Humahuaca and tourism, in particular the role that provincial government has had in this process. -

UN PUEBLO BOUTIQUE. La construcción de Purmamarca como atractivo turístico Constanza Tommei1 Instituto de Arte Americano F.A.D.U.-U.B.A. Alejandro Benedetti2 Instituto Interdisciplinario Tilcara U.B.A. Introducción A partir de la crisis argentina de 2001, en el país se desarrolló considerablemente el turismo interno, siendo la Quebrada de Humahuaca (provincia de Jujuy) uno de los destinos que más creció, especialmente las localidades de Tilcara, Humahuaca y Purmamarca. En estos lugares, antes de 2001, existía una escasa oferta de servicios turísticos. Desde entonces, se produjo un incremento sostenido del equipamiento hotelero y gastronómico, a la vez que hubo un acondicionamiento general del espacio material con una clara orientación turística. En este contexto, se destaca Purmamarca. En poco tiempo, esta comunidad agropastoril devino en un pueblo boutique, donde se amalgamó su estructura originaria de tipo rural y andina con desarrollos arquitectónicos con una fuerte impronta urbana. Se produjo una fuerte adaptación de sus características y de la oferta de bienes y servicios a los parámetros estéticos y a los deseos de consumo de turistas procedentes, en gran parte, de la capital del país y del extranjero. Los lugares turísticos se van construyendo como resultado de diferentes prácticas materiales y culturales de la sociedad, mediante las cuales se van definiendo y poniendo en valor ciertos elementos, procesos o atributos. Mediante esas prácticas los lugares devienen atractivos para la realización del turismo. A este proceso puede denominarse como de construcción del lugar como atractivo turístico o, utilizando un neologismo, turistificación (Navarro Floria y Vejsberg, 2009). Kylander-Clark† and Ricardo Alonso‡ *Middlebury College Geology Department, Middlebury, VT, USA †Earth Research Institute, University of California, Santa Barbara, CA, USA ‡Departamento de Geologıa, Universidad Nacional de Salta, Salta, Argentina ABSTRACT Foreland basins are important recorders of tectonic and climatic processes in evolving mountain ranges. The Rıo Iruya canyon of NW Argentina (23° S) exposes ca. 7500 m of Oran Group foreland basin sediments, spanning over 8 Myr of near continuous deposition in the Central Andes. This study presents a record of sedimentary provenance for the Iruya Section in the context of a revised stratigraphic chronology. We use U-Pb zircon ages from six interbedded ash layers and new magnet- ostratigraphy to constrain depositional ages in the section between 1.94 and 6.49 Ma, giving an aver- 1 age sedimentation rate of 0.93 0.02 (2r) km MyrÀ . We then pair U-Pb detrital zircon dating Æ with quartz trace-element analysis to track changes in sedimentary provenance from ca. 7.6 to 1.8 Ma. Results suggest that from ca. 7.6 to ca. 6.3 Ma, the Iruya watershed did not tap the Salta Group or Neogene volcanics that are currently exposed in the eastern Cordillera and Puna margin. One explanation is that a long-lived topographic barrier separated the eastern Puna from the foreland for much of the mid-late Miocene, and that the arrival of Jurassic-Neogene zircons records regional tectonic reactivation at ca. -

GONDWANA 503 i11 du Toit < Gondwana, Samfrau > ... the really important point is not so much to disprove Wegener’s particular views as to decide from the relevant evidence whether or not continental drift is a genuine variety of earth movement. —Holmes, 1944.1 A geologist who looked for geological evidence to test Wegener’s hypothesis of continental drift was Alexander Logie du Toit (1878-1948). As a field geologist for the Geological Survey of South Africa he became familiar with the regional geology of that country. Curious to see firsthand how well, if at all, the geology either side of the Atlantic matched, he applied for and upon receiving a generous grant from the Carnegie Institution of Washington in 1923 he spent five months in South America familiarizing himself with the geology of Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil. His seminal paper, A Geological Comparison of South America with South Africa, was published in 1927. El estudio estilístico de estas piezas, conservadas en las colecciones de dos museos de la Universidad de Buenos Aires, permitió caracterizar la dinámica de los procesos sociopolíticos que llevaron a la intensa circulación de objetos durante la época prehispánica tardía. A su vez, a partir de la contextualización de piezas incaicas, procedentes de distintas provincias del Tawantinsuyu, se determinaron pautas de consumo diferencial. Se plantea que el uso de diversas categorías de bienes estuvo vinculado a la función social y económica que cumplieron distintos grupos de personas en el Pucará. This paper presents the results of an analysis of part of the ceramic assemblage found at the Pucará of Tilcara during Ambrosetti’s and Debenedetti’s excavations, that took place at the beginning of the twentieth century. The stylistic study of this pottery, found in the collections of two museums at the Universidad de Buenos Aires, allows a characterization the dynamics of the social and politic processes that encouraged the circulation of objects during late prehispanic times. The location of inca pieces that came from different provinces of Tawantinsuyu demonstrate different consumption patterns. -
