Continued……...WHAT GOES ON IN SWINDERBY? CHOPS Central Heating Oil Purchasing Scheme is a simple organisation designed to save us all some money on our central heating oil. I collect orders about 6 times a year. On my buying day, I get the best price possible and advise everyone where the oil is coming from and the current price. The saving comes from the bulk delivery into the village which normally means at least one full tanker load and 25+ deliveries. Payment depends on the supplier, but the worst scenario is that they phone for a debit card prior to delivery (they all charge a premium for Credit Cards). I do not handle any payment and have no vested interest in any oil company. If you run out of oil between deliveries, you can make your own arrangements and I am not in the least bit offended. The whole enterprise is 100% above board and I make or gain nothing from running CHOPS (apart from a few headaches usually related to deliveries!) If you want to 'join' just let me have name, address and post code as well as your phone number and I will add you to my list. Please note the minimum oil delivery is 500 litres (as designated by the oil suppliers). You will find forward delivery dates and other information in the Linkup. Call David Gardiner 86

Notes From A Small Parish - May 2019

Well, the May meeting was a particularly busy one. It was the Annual Meeting of the Parish Council which is where all the post- election business is conducted. Dry but a statutory requirement!

So, we’ll start with this months’ ‘did you know’: Did you know that, technically, following an election the elected nominees aren’t councillors until the paperwork has been completed at the following meeting and in our case this was for the first two and a half weeks of May. In practice, of course, existing councillors ensured that the essential business of the Parish Council continued.

You’ll recall that Swinderby didn’t have ‘put a cross in the box’ parish elections as the number of nominees matched the number required for a full council and so it was uncontested. Under these circumstances no election is required. That saved us all some money as the cost of these things all comes out of the public purse.

So, back to the meeting which was held late in the month this month, the 20th May, for administrative reasons but back to normal next month. Incidentally, the 20 May was also the deadline for articles to be submitted to Sarah for publication in this LinkUp! So, this is likely to be a shorter write up than normal. As I said, we had a busy agenda mostly taken up with the administration and signing of the lots of official paperwork for the new councillors, electing representatives to outside bodies (the school, Poor Trust, Village Hall committee and so on), nominating responsibilities within the parish council and making sure the budgets are on track. All very exciting stuff!

This is how your Parish Council looks now; Chair – Reg Ketteringham, Vice Chair – Geoff Lloyd, Councillors – Lynne Carter, Nick Marris, Jonathon Gagg, Gary Shelbourn and Ron Hodgson.

Bruce Clark has stood down to better enjoy his retirement, a very worthy reason I think! I would like to thank Bruce for his excellent contribution to the council and the village over the last few years. And not to mention his often dry sense of humour!

I would like to welcome Gary Shelbourn back to the council, effectively filling Bruce’s place. As you may recall Gary has served for some years previously as Vice Chair and is well known and liked in the village. So, we are still at full strength and looking forward to some interesting times ahead!

Other stuff- Swinfest 2019 this year is on Saturday 6th July. Hosted by The Plough this event raises funds for the air ambulance and a request came to the PC to donate. We can’t donate money to individuals or businesses even if it’s being passed straight on to a charity but we can donate to the charity directly. So, like last year we voted to donate £100 to the Lincolnshire Air Ambulance. It’s a worthy cause and it has been called to Swinderby on more than one occasion!

14

We have no update yet from The Thomas Whites Charity following their presentation to us about wanting to dig large irrigation pits next to the village (as reported in last month’s Link Up) so we await updated plans from them. Neither have we heard any more from Peter Sowerby Homes about developing the old Produce World site on Moor Lane. The latest we heard was that Peter’s ideas hadn’t progressed as quickly as he’d hoped but that he’s working on it.

Don’t forget that the meeting dates are back to normal now so that’s every second Monday of the month but no meeting in August. So, hopefully see you on 10th June at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall.

Well, as I’m dashing for the deadline, that’s all for now, folks.

Reg Ketteringham, Chair. Swinderby Parish Council.

A THANK YOU from Macmillan Cancer Support. The Merry Macs fundraising team would like to send heartfelt thanks to the former Good Companions of Swinderby for very kindly gifting their beautiful crockery to Macmillan. Lock Matters The oil delivery into the village on the 24 May was from NWF Fuels and was 46.70p per litre + 5% VAT.

Small Friendly The oil market is a bit volatile at Mobile Locksmiths present due to such things as Trump’s belligerent approach towards Iran and Venezuela, a 2% Lock Openings devaluation of the £:$ as a BREXIT Locks Fitted compromise appears unlikely and forward prices starting to increase. This month has seen our Year 6 children undertake their SAT tests. We have been proud of the attitude they have had and the hard work they have put in. After their final test, they were able to blow off a little steam with a water fight – taking great pleasure in getting their own back on some of the teachers!

18 Year 5/6 children recently went on a residential adventure weekend. They took part in a variety of activities including kayaking, quad biking, archery and throwing themselves off extremely high telegraph poles!

Our Year 5 children took part in a Bikeability course, learning how to ride safely around the roads of Swinderby, while the younger children have been learning to cycle on balance bikes on the school playground.

KS1 took an exciting trip to to visit the aquarium as part of their topic “Under the Sea”. Years 3 and 4 have taken part in a multi-sport event. The children were put into teams with pupils from other schools – this was a good opportunity to mix with other people and display good teamwork, as well as sporting prowess.

Life in a Little Pond by Richard Brooks

At the end of March the water in my foot deep 4’x3’ front garden pond, made from a recycled farm water tank, was like a brown gravy of rotted leaves, and covered with duckweed. So I set about draining and cleaning it. My garden isn’t of the “pots ‘n’ pebbles” variety and I’m used to finding the odd amphibian among plants, under stones or in the water. However, the messy operation brought up a dead common newt, seven live ones and five immature frogs. These I safely transferred to two of my small back garden ponds, to hide among the marsh marigolds and yellow flag irises. I also have a larger 110sq.ft. shallow one of which the invasive irises have taken over 40%.

Bill Pacey once told me there were once a dozen farm ponds around the village, one in Meadow View now replaced by a bungalow! Each would have been home to frogs, toads and newts, maybe hunted by grass snakes, and supported by many insects and invertebrates. These habitats have mostly vanished, but our gardens around a pond can mimic them in miniature and be fascinating little nature reserves. I remember my pupils at Collingham School discovering an adult dragonfly on a reed slowly emerging from the skin of its underwater stage to dry its wings and fly for the first time. In one corner of my garden snuggled up together between stones I once found an immature trio, frog, toad and newt!

Amphibians need water in which to lay their eggs and go through the tadpole stages of course, and frequently return to it. But they do much of their feeding on insects etc. away from water and seek shelter under stones, slabs, logs and close ground plants. Amphibians away from water are an easy prey for marauding cats, they don’t just decimate our garden birds!! So my front garden seems to do the trick with wild geraniums, bluebells, foxgloves, ivy and other perennials, under which I’m never surprised to find one of the little residents.

I didn’t introduce the three species, they simply settled into a favourable environment they came across over the years. Some years frogs spawn in the larger pond. I Family Film presume newts too breed in my ponds, it’s just that Recommendation: their individual eggs are impossible to spot. So why If you haven’t seen it not put a simple little pond with a few plants into a already, The Lorax (U) is corner of your garden, surround it with some big fabulous whatever your years. (Currently available stones, logs, ferns and foxgloves perhaps and other on Netflix) ground-covering perennials. Wait patiently and don’t search, but slowly amphibious residents will Have you seen the David move in, cause you no trouble and devour insects Attenborough and invertebrates in lieu of paying rent.
