How are museum and galleries adapting to today's audiences? Can eating a popsicle affect social change? These are examples of just some of the questions that the speakers at The 2017 Lulu Series: Art in the City will tackle. Since 2003, the City of Richmond's Lulu Series: Art in the City program has presented international, national and regional speakers including acclaimed artists, architects, urban planners and other cultural leaders. From urban planning and placemaking to art as community development and urban revitalization, this engaging speakers series explores the relationship between art and our urban environment. Artists, urbanists and design enthusiasts from across Metro Vancouver are invited to attend three inspirational evening talks at Richmond City Hall. All events are free, but seating is limited. Reserve your seat at [email protected]. John Patkau, Patkau Architects THE CHANGING NATURE OF GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS April 6, 2017 at 7:00 PM Today’s art galleries and museums seek to engage, motivate and inspirea 21st century audience that challenges our cultural institutions tobecome more agile, flexible and creative in the way that they present content. Patkau Architects’ vast portfolio includes the Canadian Clay andGlass Gallery in Ontario, Audain Art Museum in Whistler, Polygon Gallery in North Vancouver and Thunder Bay Art Gallery. John Patkau’s designs reflect the evolution of the art gallery and museum from being spaces for the display and preservation of objects toward new places of cultural commons This talk will be preceded by Richmond-based tar and sitar player, Ali Azumi. Eric & Mia, Interdisciplinary Artists MAPPING, NAPPING, AND OVERLAPPING: PERFORMANCE WITH AND IN COMMUNITIES May 4, 2017 at 7:00 PM Having a conversation with a stranger, eating a popsicle made of foraged ingredients, skateboarding in concert or sleeping at the base of a public monument are lived actions- experiences that can precipitate dialogue and affect social or spatial change. Using their collaborative practice as a case study, Calgary-based artists Eric & Mia will share the different ways in which they create community through performance. By combining the playfulness of childhood chums with the scrutiny of ethnographers, they create community-specific, relational and participatory works that invite audiences to become active agents in the creation of community. This talk will be preceded by a short performance by spoken-word poet, Dia Davina richmond.ca/luluseries Richmond City Hall 6911 No.3 Road, Richmond 5 EVENTS: SPRING FEVER: VANCOUVER INDEPENDENT ARCHIVES 2017 DATES: March 18 - April 8, 2017 grunt gallery, 221A, the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, VIVO Media Arts Centre, and Western Front are excited to announce a three week programming series focusing on local independent archives and archival practices in the arts. Keynote: Hannah B. Higgins, professor of art history, University of Illinois at Chicago. Underground in the Aether is a symposium conceived in response to the themes of collectivity, selfhood, and changing technologies as advanced in the exhibition Hank Bull: Connexion. The exhibition covers the 1970s to the mid-1990s and brings together a collection of material traces in order to explore Bull’s role as a connecting figure between international artist-run communities and networks. Out of Bull’s and others’ collective and performative experiments in communication-as-art and social sculpture emerged glimpses at world-building projects modeled through shifting forms of individual identity and community. Presenters are welcome to expand on these ideas by way of their current research. Our aim is to articulate a wider history of artistic activities within mediums now supported by the internet, social media, and mobile devices. The symposium may also serve as an exchange on the methodological challenges that arise in our attempts at retrospective readings and correspondence with communities and networks now fixed within a collection or archive. What forms did networks adopt as artists navigated an increasingly globalized and media-saturated world? How did these mediums allow for Fluxus-minded activities, the exploration of different ways of being, and new social forms? How does one locate and cast the connecting or mediating figures within archives and networks? The underground transposed into the aether alternates between manoeuvres that attempt to evade control or that concede to immersion as a means of living through it.
