The Angelic Spirit in Early Christianity: Justin, the Martyr and Philosopher* Bogdan G. Bucur / Duquesne University In the conclusion of his article entitled “The Angelic Spirit in Early Judaism,” John R. Levison invited the scholarly community to use his work as “a suitable foundation for discussion of the angelic spirit” in early Christianity.1 A few years later, in his study of angelomorphic chris- tology, Charles A. Gieschen highlighted the need for similar work in the field of early pneumatology.2 The case for angelomorphic pneu- matology has been argued at length with respect to the Book of Reve- lation, the Shepherd of Hermas, and Clement of Alexandria.3 This essay contributes to the discussion by pursuing the occurrence of the “an- gelic spirit” in the writings of Justin Martyr.4 * I am grateful to Fr. THE ALBIGENSIAN HERESY AND THE GNOSTIC TRADITION John Stine Penman, M.A. Western Michigan University, 1983 That the Albigensian heresy represents a resurgence of early Christian Gnosticism is the thesis of this work. The study defines Gnosticism in terms of its pattern of prevalent characteristics and traces the course of Gnosticism and its emergence as the Albigensianism of the Middle Ages. Using the finding of Hans Soderberg's La Religion des Cathares: Etudes, sur le gnosticisme de la basse antiquite et du moyen Sge. as a point of departure through the analysis of documents discovered since 1949, the study shows that Gnosticism and the Albigensian heresy represent a continued tradition of religious expression as a recognizable alternative to the accepted and established institutions of Christianity in the Western world. -

Despite the number and quality of sources, Mark, and his Valentinian doctrine and rites have been neglected in modern research, in contrast to his famous predecessors and contemporaries like Valentinus or Basilides, who have both been the subjects of monographs. The thesis is divided into two main parts. The first collects and investigates the sources which mention Mark and his system of teaching. The second part provides a commentary on such writings. The first part concludes that the work Adversus haereses written by Irenaeus against the heretics is the basis of our knowledge about Mark. Irenaeus himself drew on several sources for his report: he probably used and quoted, partly verbatim, a separate treatise in which Mark set down his teachings. The father of the Church also refers expressly to the missionary work done by ‘pupils’ of Mark in the river valley of the Rhône, i.e. in the immediate vicinity of Lyon, the seat of Irenaeus’ bishopric. He further quotes from a Christian poem mocking the Gnostic. This fierce literary attack is unique in early Christian literature and was probably the main source which Irenaeus used for his polemic against Mark and his Gnostic adherents. Another source besides Irenaeus is Hippolytus’ treatise Refutatio omnium haeresium. Hippolytus based his own report on the older book by Irenaeus but added new information gathered in Marcosian circles in his own time. -

Come, thou who givest joy to all who are at one with Thee Come and commune with us in this thanksgiving... —Gnostic hymn [Drinker, 150] Before the Roman triumph of Christianity, serious disagreements had already appeared among the believers. Gnostics were the first Christians to be expelled from the church as heretics. But not all Gnostics were Christian. Jewish Gnosticism predated Christianity, and pagan Gnostics who praised Prometheus and the Titans for opposing the tyranny of Zeus. [Geger, 168; Godwin, 85] Persian dualism, Hellenistic Neo-Platonism, and Egyptian mysticism were all influential in shaping Gnosticism. There was no one unified body of Gnostic belief. Though some Gnostic gospels were among the earliest Christian texts, all were banned from the orthodox canon that became the New Testament. Most people don't realize that the New Testament is a carefully screened selection from a much larger body of Christian scriptures. The others were not simply excluded from the official collection, but were systematically destroyed when Christianity became the state religion. [Epiphanius, in Legge, xliii] Egyptian Gnostics managed to protect an important cache of scriptures from the book-burners by burying them in large jars. Until the discovery of these Nag Hammadi scrolls in 1947, what little was known of the Gnostics came mostly from their sworn enemies, the orthodox clergy. [Pagels 1979: xxxv, xvii; Allegro, 108; Wentz, 363fn, lists a few surviving manuscripts known by 1900.] One of the few scriptures that did survive intact is the Pistis Sophia, while others are known fragmentarily from quotations in orthodox writings, especially those of Irenaeus and Hippolytus of Rome. -

Lived Religion Among Second-Century 'Gnostic Hieratic
Nicola Denzey Lewis LivedReligion among second-century ‘Gnostic hieratic specialists’¹ This contribution focuses on the socio-historical details of anumber of so-called ‘Gnostic hieratic specialists’ activeinsecond-centuryRome.The material de- rives primarily from Irenaeus’ Adversus Haereses (ca. 180 CE), aheresiological tractate that aims to draw boundarylines between different Christian specialists and their communities. Aclose reading of Adv.Haer. and Irenaeus’ sometimes scathing portraits of certain Gnostic hieratic specialists – particularly aValenti- nian Christian known as Marcus the Magician (Magus) – reveals that Irenaeus himself,like many of the so-calledGnostics he scorned, formed anew class of Christian textual producer in the imperialperiod. The study seeks to refute Irenaeus’ claim to be an authority representing the ‘Great Church’,and high- lights the diversity of practices that comprised second-century Christianity. This essayturns to heresiological sources – primarilythe writingsofIrenaeus, with support from Hippolytus and Tertullian – to interrogatethe chargesofaber- rant religio-sexual practices, gendertroubles, and ritual improprieties that dog- gedaclass of individuals Iterm here ‘Gnostic hieratic specialists’.How did these individuals “form and reform ritual actions and theological constructions” (to cite the Call for Papers)?
