Monument Types and Dates MOAT (Medieval - 1066 AD to 1540 AD) Evidence EARTHWORK MOATED SITE (Medieval - 1066 AD to 1540 AD) Evidence EARTHWORK

Description and Sources Description During the last 50 years (writing in 1861) the offices and stables of the old moated hall of Bellaport (which has been destroyed) have been used as farm buildings. <1a>

Early in this (C19) century the old house was taken down. It was surrounded by a moat, and stood in an extensive park. (Sketch based on an old drawing accompanies this note) <2>

Evaluated for MPP in 1990-1, Low score as one of 133 Moated sites. <4>

Home of the Grosvenor family, and from 1634 the Cottons. . . .Probably in the late 17th century the Hall was remodelled; by then it occupied the whole width of the site. <5>

In 1927-8 the surviving part of the Old Hall was occupied as a farmhouse.[<5 citing [<3>]>

See PRN 07564 for the evidence for both a formal garden and a park.<5>

Part of a wide moat possibly survives to the west of the modern farm. Whilst this may be a post medieval ornemental feature, based on a possible 16th century sketch of the house, it could well have been adapted from an earlier medieval moat.<6> Sources (00) Card index: Site and Monuments Record (SMR) cards (SMR record cards) by Shropshire County Council SMR, SMR Card for PRN SA 01595. Monument Types and Dates CHAPEL? (Medieval - 1066 AD to 1540 AD) Evidence CONJECTURAL EVIDENCE Evidence DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE Evidence PLACENAME EVIDENCE

Description and Sources Description A chapel by tradition once existed at Betton <1>

Its site is probably marked by the field name Chapel applied to two fields on the E side of the Market Drayton road on the Tithe Map <2>

Tithe award transcription map indicates two or possibly three buildings (schematic depiction only) within Chapel field, located to the west of the current road. <3>

Chapel field was divided in two following the realignment of the road straight through the field at the end of the 19th century. The buildings noted on the Tithe award transcription map (schematic depiction only)[<3>] are not shown on this later map. <4>

No above ground evidence exists today. The ‘Chapel’, if existent, may have been part of the Monastic Grange at Betton established following the grant of lands in the 11th and 12th century (PRN 32514). <5> Sources (00) Card index: Site and Monuments Record (SMR) cards (SMR record cards) by Shropshire County Council SMR, SMR Card for PRN SA 03684. Monument Types and Dates FORMAL GARDEN (16th century to 17th century - 1567 AD to 1699 AD) Evidence DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE PARK (17th century to Late 18th century - 1600 AD to 1799 AD) Evidence DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE

Description and Sources Description Bellaport Old Hall, home of the Grosvenor family and from 1634 the Cottons, was partly demolished early in the 19th century. It stood within a square medieval moat.[see PRN 01595] Probably in the later 16th or earlier 17th century the Hall was remodelled; by then it occupied the full width of the site. A formal garden was laid out within the moat in front of it, with half being given over to a simple parterre. (T.S.A.S. 4 ser. 11 (1927-8) , 94-9; F. Stackhouse Acton, Castles and Old Mansions of Shropshire [1868], 38-9). The Hall was approached from the south-west by a 300-yard long avenue (J. Rocque, Map of Shropshire (1752); still visible in 1870s: O.S. 6,, IX.NE (1891)). In 1927-8 the surviving part of the Old Hall was occupied as a farmhouse (T.S.A.S. 4 ser. 11 (1927-8),95) <1>

[The old house] was surrounded by a moat, and stood in an extensive park. <1a>

The fields to the south of the Hall included ones called "Upper Park (No 1179), "Middle Park" (No 1180) and "Lower Park" (Nos 1181, 1182 and 1185). The field to the west was called "Hall Meadow" (No 1162) <2>

It has been suggested that the moat is part of the post medieval ornemental feature, particularily from evidence of a possible 16th century sketch of the house, although it could well have been adapted from an earlier medieval moat. <3> Sources (01) Field survey report: A Survey of Historic Parks and Gardens in Shropshire (SCCAS Rep) by Stamper Paul A (1993), p 127. Description and Sources Description Tunstall Hall, in Norton in Hales, is a nine-bay building of c.1732 ( N. Pevsner, Shropshire (1958),305). In the late 19th century it had extensive ornamental and kitchen gardens, and was approached from the west by a short, tree-lined drive. South of the Hall, and partly bounded to the east by the river Tern, was a modest park crossed by drives giving access towards Market Drayton (O.S. 6, IX.SW (1889); IX.S E (1892); XVI.NW (1888)) <1>

Photographed during air photographic survey in 2007 (general shot). <4>

No archaeological finds or features were recorded during a watching brief on geotechnical works within the boundaries of the gardens, at Shiffords Bridge Pumping Station, in 2011. Substantial peat deposits were identified in all of the trenches. While undated, the presence of the peat deposits suggests that this area of the site is unlikely to have been occupied in recent times although the natural environment may have been exploited for food and materials. <5> Sources (01) Field survey report: A Survey of Historic Parks and Gardens in Shropshire (SCCAS Rep) by Stamper Paul A (1993). Interior: C18 dog-leg staircase with landings around rectangular well; open string with cut brackets, fluted balusters (2 per tread), returning to landing, and wreathed moulded handrail with fluted foot newel. Round arched staircase window at rear. Two C18 oak doors to first-floor landing, each with 2 raised and fielded panels. Attic staircase with stick balusters. Left-hand ground-floor room: probably early C20 Ionic screen between room and entrance hall with 2 fluted columns and lugged architrave. Early C19 reeded fireplace surround with grate. Right-hand ground floor room: moulded-arched recess. Guilloche-ornamented frieze. C20 fireplace surround with C18 or early C19 cast- iron grate. Rear room has early C19 fireplace with reeded surround and cast-iron basket grate. Bedroom fireplaces with C18 basket grates and some plain C18 surrounds. C18 six-panelled doors throughout, some in round-arched openings. Panelled window shutters. The present occupier of the house (July 1986) reports that Sir Oswald Mosely lived here at some time. The darker brickwork of the second floor (see side walls) might indicate that this is an early C19 (see dentil brick eaves cornice) addition. However since the window details above and below the change are identical it is more likely that the top floor has been either rebuilt or simply that a different batch of bricks was used. <2> Sources (00) Card index: Site and Monuments Record (SMR) cards (SMR record cards) by Shropshire County Council SMR, SMR Card for PRN SA 14030. Cupboards with H-L hinges. 6-panelled doors throughout house with moulded architraves. The low floor to ceiling heights (especially to the first floor) of the front range suggest that this too is a rebuilding of a timber framed range, albeit a comprehensive one. Brand Hall was formerly the family home of the Davison family. The styche arms in the pediment are probably a later addition as they were granted to Samuel Davison in 1737. William Baker carried out minor internal alterations for Robert Davison in 1756. In the early C19 Brand Hall was owned by Purney Sillitoe, John Soane's friend, and later by the Griffin family. The house stands within a small wooded park. Buildings of England, pp78-9; Colvin, p84; H. E. Forrest, Some Old Shropshire Houses and their Owners, pp57-64 <2>

Photographed during aerial survey in 2007. <7><8>

The imposing block added in the early 18C, originally had a large entrance hall more in keeping than the present hall with the grandeur of the engaged pilasters and armorial pediment of the façade. <9>

Description and Sources Description Archway. Circa 1700. Red brick with grey sandstone ashlar dressings. Piers with plinths, chamfered quoins and impost bands to elliptical arch. Open triangular pediment. This is one of a pair of ornamental archways flanking the front of Brand Hall (qv). They mark the line of the carriage drive in front of the house and might formerly have formed part of a larger forecourt arrangement. Before the early C19 additions to the house they would have appeared more detached from the main block, to which they might have been physically attached by quadrant link walls. The old list description of the house (1959) states that the arches formerly contained ornamental lion gates. Both gates largely obscured by climbing plants at time of survey (July 1986). Description and Sources Description A field containing extensive remains of ridge and furrow was identified by M Fradley in 2005 from perusal of NMR aerial photographic collections. In the NE corner of the field he also noted a large rectangular earthwork. Following a site visit in July 2005, coupled with documentary research, Mr Fradley interpreted the rectangular feature as the site of a grange farm held by Shrewsbury Abbey. He also noted the remains of an earth dam at the northern edge of the field. <1>

These earthwork features are discussed in more detail and an aerial photograph held in the NMR is reproduced. Site has been destroyed. These earthworks consisted of a large central platform, partially deilineated by ditches and the steep fall of the ground to the west, with two smaller platforms to the east and south. To the east were extensive tracts of ridge and furrow, to the west were the remains of a large earth dam which held back a fishpond and may also have been part of a watermill complex. <2>

This earthwork complex is visible on LiDAR imagery and on 1999 aerial photography, although very little trace remains (the site appearing to have been levelled) on more recent aerial photography. <3><4><5> Sources (01) Correspondence: Emails relating to Lower Farm, Ridgewardine by Fradley Michael (2005). Monument Types and Dates GREAT HOUSE (17th century to Late 19th century - 1600 AD to 1899 AD) Evidence DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE FARMHOUSE (20th century - 1900 AD to 1999 AD) Evidence EXTANT BUILDING

Description and Sources Description The farmhouse was formerly part of a large house, built on a medieval moated site in the early C17, which was largely demolished in the C19. MATERIALS: Coursed stone and red brick with stone dressings with render and colour-wash and a plain tiled roof. PLAN: The building is L-shaped, with a ground floor rooms and a staircase hall to the wing which runs east-west and two ground floor rooms to the north-south wing. EXTERIOR: The south front is rendered and has C19 and C20 glazing with four-light and two-light casements, a gable to far left and a C20 gabled brick porch to left of centre. Extending at right is a single-storey block. The west front is of colour- washed brick and has mullioned windows with stone surrounds to both floors. There is a blocked three-light window to the ground floor and two three- light windows to the first floor which have had their mullions removed and contain C20 wooden casements. Also at ground floor level is a chamfered stone door surround which has been raised in height and now contains a glazed C20 door above which is a C20 cement lintel. At far left is a C19 projecting dairy wing. The east front has a projecting wing at left which is partially walled with coursed stone blocks. The range at right of this is of C17 brick with patches of early-C19 replacement brickwork and there is a two-light window to the first floor with a stone surround, which was formerly mullioned and now contains an inserted C20 window. To left of this and to the ground floor are inserted two- and three-light C20 casements. It is apparent that the roof has been raised by approximately two feet across the extent of this front. At far right is a projecting C20 addition with catslide roof. The north gable end has C17 walling to its lower body and has been rebuilt with C20 brick above. The ground floor has two inserted windows. INTERIOR: There are substantial ceiling beams to the ground floor with end stops to the south-west facing room and ovolo mouldings to the edges of the south-east room. The entrance hallway on the south side contains portions of C17 panelling, including oval panels with pyramid bosses. This panelling appears to have been re-arranged with some later insertions. Inside the C19 dairy wing two lights of a mullioned window are exposed, in part of the original east front. The roof structure reuses much timber from the former roof including sizeable purlins and common rafters. The trusses take the form of kneed principals joined by collars to the southern wing and queen post trusses to the rear wing. HISTORY: Bellaport Old Hall was the home of a branch of the Grosvenor family from the Middle Ages. In around 1600 the estate passed briefly to the Mainwarings of Ightfield and after 1634 to William Cotton, a draper of London. It was partially demolished in the C19. It stood within a square medieval moat. In the later C16 or early C17 the hall was remodelled, by which time it occupied the full width of the site. A formal garden was laid out within the moat in front of the house, with half of the space being given over to a parterre. A large part of the house appears to have been demolished in the C19, and by 1927-8 the surviving part was occupied as a farm house. ->

A Z-shaped isolated farmhouse, stuccoed. It was probably constructed from salvaged stone and brick from the old Bellaport which reputedly occupied the mound in the field in front of the house. The present house once had crow-stepped gables. Bellaport was the home of the Cotton family of Alkington Hall, Whitchurch. Reputedly the Home Farm to Bellaport, it is brick-built with two small projecting wings and a recessed front. There is an abundance of curvilinear gables, which also occur on the stable-block. They are reminiscent of the crow-stepped gable treatment at Bellaport Old Hall and at Alkington Hall - clearly a Cotton preference. Like the Old Hall, the Hall Farm has the site of another house in close proximity. In this case it was known as Bellaport Towers on account of the many turrets it displayed.<3> Sources (01) Geospatial data: Historic Farmstead Characterisation Dataset by Baxter Charlotte (2010). A building survey, at level 2 standard, was undertaken in 2004 of Ridgwardine Lower Farm, in association with considering development options for the farm.
