Mannathu Padmanabhan. The Nair community was facing a crisis due to the disunity and blind adherence to outmoded customs, beliefs and practices though they had a glorious past. Ignorance accumulated over the centuries and inadequate education proved disastrous for the community. Their strong affinity for celebrations and penchant for ceremonial occasions led to extravaganza resulting in their decline and downfall. They gradually lost their land holdings and unemployment grew due to lack of modern education thus completing the process of disintegration. It was during this period that Sri. Mannathu Padmanabhan took the initiative to unite the Nair community members, to build up a great organization. In his own unique way, with his persistence, tireless efforts, vision and farsightedness, the N.S.S opened an array of educational institutions, hospitals and other socially beneficial institutions all over the state. The NSS has evolved into a well-knit and coherent organization that has never swerved from the noble ideals and high principles of the founder .The NSS runs more than a hundred Schools, number of Arts and Science Colleges, Training Colleges, Engineering College, Homeo Medical College, several Nursing Colleges, Polytechnic College, Working Women’s Hostels and Technical Institutions. NSS has extended the benefits of its service beyond communal and religious boundaries and has been playing a significant role in the social, economic, educational and political transformations of the state. Mannam Memorial N S S College, established in 1981 as a junior college. Degree courses were started in 1991 for higher education. The institution is owned and managed by the Nair Service Society. The college is situated in a lush green rural landscape of the Kollam district in Kerala; with an ideal atmosphere for the higher learning. During the year 2004 the college was recognized under 12B and 2f of the University Grants Commission. The institutional vision upholds the supremacy of pure knowledge. Our founder Bharatha Kesari Sri Mannathu Padmanabhan, a great visionary and social reformer, considered education as the only effective tool for social reforms. The institution provides quality education to the rural community in and around. Hence programmes and practices are directed at providing pure knowledge and skills to the students and modulate them as total individuals important to i Mannam Memorial NSS College, Kottiyam SSR - 2017 the society and useful to the nation. We give special attention to the socially and economically backward sections of the society. The motto of the college “NA HI NJENE SADRISAM PAVITHREMAHI VIDYATHE”, that is “In this world there is no purifier like knowledge” reflects the deep insight of the founder. The NCC and NSS units, the women’s study center ‘Manaswini’ work together for the progress of the society. The college mission is to impart affordable education to the society without any distinction of caste, creed or culture, give special attention to the economically and socially weaker sections of the society, cultivate free thinking by making students mentally sound and physically strong, to open up the frontiers of knowledge before students so that may have a desire to learn more, to create an atmosphere for the holistic development of the individual and develop them into good citizens who love their fellow beings, care for the society and live for the country and finally to provide the student with adequate skills for gainful employment. The college gives equal importance to the curricular, co-curricular activities and sports. We have succeeded in securing the best results in the university in Under-graduate and Post- graduate examinations.

    19/03/2021 Negotiating Caste: A Matter of the Public and the Home – Inter-Actions 2020 VOL 2 QTR 4 REFLECTIONS Negotiating Caste: A Matter of the Public and the Home The resurgence of caste cannot be studied without tracing the origins of its negotiations in the early modern phase – not just in the public places, but especially within the confines of the home. In January 2018, tensions built up at the site of an ongoing struggle by Dalit residents in Vadayampady near Kochi. Already for a year, Dalit families in the area had been protesting against a “caste-wall” that was built around a public ground near the Bhajanamadam Bhagavathy temple by the Nair Service Society (NSS). The wall had cut-off access to 95 cents [approx. 41,370 sq. ft] of land that was shared by people in the locality, including Dalits who have inhabited the area since the late 1960s. The same year saw the gruesome murder of Kevin, a twenty-three-year-old Dalit Christian boy by the family of his upper-caste Christian girlfriend, in what has since been considered the first case of honour-killing in modern Kerala. Other cases from the recent past like that of Dalit auto-driver Chitralekha, the lynching of tribal youth Madhu, and the controversy around artist Asanthan’s dead body all suggest that over the last few years, caste has reared its ugly head both in public and private spaces. Although most go unnoticed, some gather enough attention to challenge—even shock—the collective consciousness of a society that has taken secularism and tolerance for granted.

ABSTRACT: The work of Amartya Sen and his collaborators on Indian economic development compares three Indian states so as to demonstrate the superior per- formance of interventionist, left-wing governments in West Bengal and Kerala compared to the more typical state of Uttar Pradesh.A careful analysis of the ev- idence, however, shows that Sen et al. ignore the anti-interventionist implications of their own evidence of corruption in the state of Uttar Pradesh; dramatically overstate the success of leftist governments in West Bengal; and overlook the role of Kerala’s culture and its private education system in accounting for its famously high levels of literacy and female independence. Amartya Sen, the Indian-born economist, was awarded the Nobel prize in economics. In the citation for the award, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences () stated that the award was given for Professor Sen’s contributions to welfare economics in the fields of social choice, welfare distribution, and poverty. The Swedish Acad- emy summarized his contributions in this manner: Amartya Sen has made several key contributions to the research in fundamental problems in welfare economics. Maharashtra state has the highest number of HEIs promoting Swachhta with Effective Solid and Liquid Waste Management numbers followed by Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. India needs Swachh Bharat Mission to make India a clean and green nation. Cleanliness is not just about education, it is the morality and sensibility of common man. Every person should take upon himself/herself to contribute for a better India.
