Spring Across the River

Seasonal extension of sunlight hours. Don’t go Across the River Expectations of April showers You never will return Are sure to bring May flowers. For across the river Children’s anxieties to go out and play The Fey people do roam Create happiness and excitement to Brighten their day They dance from dawn till dusk And indulge themselves in splendor ~Ciara Jackson Forever are they stuck In a blinded bliss

Don’t go across the River The Fey people do not know The sadness and the suffering As Long as You Miss Me Of the mortals who grow old

If the sky shall cry as long as I’m gone Stay here and live So be it Go through the natural cycle A Day in the Sun If the night stays dark till I come at dawn Experience all there is to life So be it Live it unbinded If the rain shall pound against the ground in anguish S.U.M.M.E.R. Written in multicolored So be it Don’t go across the river Sidewalk chalk If it waits a thousand nights an a thousand days For you never will return My sister jumping rope, So be it For across the river My brother I’m already gone The Fey people do roam Riding his orange bike. I can’t come back ~Mollie Hansen That place that I remember is so far away The wind blowing So gone from me now The white puffy I’m torn away from it Clouds to the east. I can’t come back As I look into the sky, Sidewalk Chalk I know it’s hurting when I’m not there I see the bright yellow sun I can feel it Reflecting through the rainbow. We smell of outside The earth shakes without me near it As I call them over When we run in the door I can sense it To sit with me on It’s from the hopscotch-ing The beating is slowing and the joyful days are suddenly gone the rich green blades of grass, And drawing in chalk on the ground Lost in what used to be I set up our picnic From the wind that blows our hair Simple memories For four. As our hands wipe the grass I called it my home They flip off their Hiding evidence It was the earth, that glorious sky, and the water Flipflops and dig in Of our trip back to childhood So few there was of it To our BBQ picnic ~Stephanie Blotner Many people said the land was dead But I knew better ~Katherine Kosch Under the dry heat there was something unimaginable The Poison I can feel the earth beating Its heart rises and falls along with mine Holding on to you, to keep from falling, When I ‘m sad it reminds me of the good times with its kindness Your eyes are closing in, tear down your walls. I miss it much The weights you’re held with are appalling Now that I am away You think the answers simple: jump from it all The rises and falls are still felt But the distance pains me I don’t know your reasons, but I know your means Then it calls to me again Felt your pain and lived your cause And I remember In long lost trenches we fight and bleed Scaling the mountains Never allowed to stop or pause The heights never scared me Watching the stars We voice our feelings, in false reply The unknown made me curious Give a glimpse of a smile, however wry Seeing the graceful animals so close Feels like the light will never reach us here Even the most dangerous things I never could fear We’re choking back our longing for shed tears But I suppose we’re supposed to pretend So strangulated by those lonesome fears Better left alone Heartache is something Please don’t worry too much… But for heartache there must be remembrance It only hurts when I breathe And I will always remember I’ll find you my friend I will never forget And Like the rising tide As long as you miss me too Beating hearts grow but never die In time To simplify, I’ll stand by your side We will come together again Hope to never die ~ Sarah Abigail Mower Drawn together ~Christian Theodore Spring

Some say in spring, life begins and is anew. Expectation’s Anxieties Thus far in my life, that much is true. I arrive an hour before. On the cusp of seasons, from winters to springs Everyone flustered, makeup on the floor. The life that begins consists of a spectrum of things. Bags full of costumes falling apart. All of us together before we depart. The colors that burst from the ground and the trees, Putting hair up in puns, adding red lipstick so bright. This feeling of love partnered with wobbly knees. We’ll all be so tired by the end of this night. Pointe shoes on, the director yells “Places!” With winter’s gray and white drifting away for a year Bobby pins drop and each parson races. This tulip’s buds from the soil beginning to peer. As we wait for the enormous curtain to open, The director yells “shh” and the last word is spoken. Winter presented great challenges at school and at home, We peek around the curtain to see the crowd, Like a malevolent pestilence, never leaving me alone. Anxious and excited, as dancers, we poise proud. ~Susan Ewing Now spring has arrived, the sun radiates my vision My goals are in sight like a hunter with precision.

To be an exemplary optimist, to persevere in school Never hesitating for a moment, pushing on like a mule.

Spring is a time for welcomed change. Warmth and continuality no longer seem strange.

This cusp disappears more and more each day Like the snow has already, my inhibitions melt away This & That Moment

I am ready to be a junior; I’ve opened a new life chapter For that moment I loved you I’m pushing on with my goal, to reach Spring’s happy ever after. And you loved me in so many ways For that moment I was your love ~ Joe Juszak And you were the light to my dark days Spring Anew For that moment you were mine And losing you wasn’t a possibility Sunlight Tranquil breezes For that moment my heart was filled Rays of yellow surface my skin Through the waving trees, Because you filled the part that was empty They come from the outside Through the meadows of blooming flowers But speak deep within For that moment we never had to pretend Cleansing rains Feelings never had to hide Rays of light create a flower Blowing over the plains, For that moment I thought you’d be mine forever Grows into a tree In the distance a rumble of thunder. Until I ruined that moment with a lie Becomes a tower Emerging fauna For that moment I was lost Rays of gold announce their presence Enjoying the sun’s sauna, And there was nothing I could say or do Learned to be loved Leaping with joy through the fields For that moment I was faced It is life’s great essence With the mere thought of losing you A cycle anew From the trees that wither Appearing as the final clues For that moment I lost that moment And the grass that grows That spring returns once more And your trust I couldn’t earn Sunlight, sunlight what have you done? In this moment I’m stuck trying to figure out Only God knows ~David Hershey Why that lesson took so long for me to learn

So surfacing sunlight For the moment I do not wish to change the past Create what you see Yet it’s hard to survive in the present So that when it is time to grow From this moment I’m working on my future You will become a tree. So hopefully you can join me in it

Blogs are Dead! Long Live Twitter! by Lulu Tang, Entertainment Staff Writer

Blogs? Psh. That’s a thing of the past. Make way for the new blogosphere – the lazy version of a blog: Twitter. News- week calls it “the stupidest invention on the internet”, but bloggers, celebrities, and even politicians “tweet” religiously. There are a lot of celebrities on Twitter, some real, some fake. Robert Pattinson had a Twitter that people followed pretty closely… Only to realize that it was made by some delusional fan. Either way, the Twitter phenomenon seems to be pretty widespread. Celebrities on Twitter don’t seem to update often and when they do, it’s usually to talk about a new tour date or concert happening somewhere. This is obviously acceptable and I have no problem with that, but who had any idea that a celebrity’s life was so… boring? I don’t know about you, but I had always had the impression that a celebrity lived a busy life filled with the paparazzi and parties, photo shoots and movie shoots, interviews and appearances. However, Twitter reveals the more dull side of a star’s life. As one user commented on Telegraph article, “Twitter reveals mundane lifestyles of celebrities”, “Yeah it must suck sitting around with millions of dollars and nothing to do.” Tell me about it. Plus, most of the celebrities that are on Twitter are fakes. How can you tell the difference between the real Robert Pattinson and the fake Robert Pattinson? I went looking for Dane Cook’s Twitter account the other day and I came up with two users. Both claimed to be the real Dane Cook, the comedian, but it was pretty obvious that the one with the better sense of humor and less middle-school-imposter sounding tweets was Mr. Cook, himself. Sometimes it’s easy to tell whether it really is the celebrity or not. But this is only the case when the actual celebrity is really on Twitter. If the celebrity doesn’t have a Twitter in the first place, people will end up following the fake that IS on the site and get false updates and such.[ Um… I need a point or something here…] Oh, look at that. Dane Cook just found his iHome receipt. How exciting.

Home Taping Didn’t Kill Music: The Case for Copyleft Jay Winkler, Entertainment Editor All rights reserved. These three words have plagued culture distribution for many years. First home taping was going to kill the music industry. Now, its peer-to-peer file sharing. The big media com - panies have attempted to come down hard on those who violate copy- right law, and its largely failed. Somehow, consumers haven’t taken to being referred to as criminals. File sharing is here to stay, and there’s little the media companies can do about it. However, there is one solution: copyleft. Copyleft isn’t quite the opposite of copy- right, but, its pretty closed. Copyleft licenses, such as the popular Creative Commons licenses, have “some rights reserved”. They’re good for consumers, and, in the end, good for artists too. There are a few types of Creative Commons licens- es, and all other copyleft licenses are fairly simi- lar. The most popular CC license is called the “Attribution-Noncommercial- Share Alike” license. In short, this means you can do whatever you want to a work licensed under CC, including redistribute it and cre- ate work based on it, as long as you send people to the original work, don’t make any money off of your work, and you license your work under CC. So, for example, if I’ve writ- ten a book and it’s been licensed under CC, and someone wants to make an audiobook of it, then, as long as they fulfill the conditions described above, they can. Furthermore, you re- tain the rights to make profit off of your original work, other people just can’t make profit off of it. This is exactly what writer Cory Doctorow does. He calls himself a copyfighter, and is writing some of the best science fiction out there. All of his work is licensed under CC, and still, despite the fact that his books are available for free on his own website, his most recent book, Little Brother, spent time on the New York Times Bestseller List. He has proven that by releasing his books for free, he in fact just gains name recognition, and a large group of fans who are perfectly willing to pay for his books. I read Little Brother for free off of my computer screen twice. I am also the proud owner of a physical (signed) copy. In fact, at the most recent scifi convention I attended, I left the convention with two books that I could have acquired digital copys of for free. While widespread use in the music industry may seem to be an issue, the fact is, most artists will find themselves in Doc - torow’s situation. By licensing at least some of their work under CC, allowing their fans to freely distribute it, they will just get name recognition and create the paying audience that comes with a loyal fanbase. There is no question that copyright law is broken. It was created pre-internet, and couldn’t possibly anticipate how quickly artists, or, more accurately, major media conglomerates, would lose total control of their product.
