DRAFT – VCH Gloucestershire 15 [Cheltenham] Communications Roads Cheltenham lies on routes connecting the upper Severn Vale with the Cotswolds to the east and Midlands to the north. Several major ancient routes passed nearby, including the Fosse Way, White Way and Salt Way, and the town was linked into this important network of roads by more local, minor routes. Cheltenham may have been joined to the Salt Way running from Droitwich to Lechlade1 by Saleweistrete,2 or by the old coach road to London, the Cheltenham end of which was known as Greenway Lane;3 the White Way running north from Cirencester passed through Sandford.4 The medieval settlement of Cheltenham was largely ranged along a single high street running south-east and north-west, with its church and manorial complex adjacent to the south, and burgage plots (some still traceable in modern boundaries) running back from both frontages.5 Documents produced in the course of administering the liberty of Cheltenham refer to the via regis, the king’s highway, which is likely to be a reference to this public road running through the liberty. 6 Other forms include ‘the royal way at Herstret’ and ‘the royal way in the way of Cheltenham’ (in via de Cheltenham). Infringements recorded upon the via regis included digging and ploughing, obstruction with timbers and dungheaps, the growth of trees and building of houses.7 The most important local roads were those running from Cheltenham to Gloucester, and Cheltenham to Winchcombe, where the liberty administrators were frequently engaged in defending their lords’ rights. Leland described the roads around Cheltenham, Gloucester and Tewkesbury as ‘subject to al sodeyne risings of Syverne, so that aftar reignes it is very foule to 1 W.S. -

Stroud District Local Plan Review Regulation 18 Preferred Strategy - Stagecoach West Response 1. Introduction Stagecoach West welcomes the further opportunity to formally examine and comment further on the emerging proposals for the longer-term planning of the District. We applaud the decision of the District Council to undertake a second Regulation 18 consultation, allowing further work to be presented in support of the emerging development strategy and the resulting proposed allocations, and allowing appropriate opportunity for this to be scrutinised and tested by a full range of interested parties. We understand that the stated purpose of this round of consultation is to help the Council and a wider range of Statutory Consultees to collectively understand how far:- • How far the community and key stakeholders support the Council’s preferred strategy for meeting Stroud District’s future growth and development needs. • What additional issues or constraints exist relating to the proposed sites, and how specific constraints, needs and opportunities should be reflected in the final site allocation policies. • What further changes to the proposed policies are considered necessary, including specific things that should be included in supporting text. Our comments are thus advanced in two broad sections: a commentary on the Plan and its key supporting evidence base; and site-specific comments and observations. Our site specific responses relate principally to the sites proposed for allocation. We strongly support the vast majority of the options that the Council has identified. Our observation are aimed at giving both the Council and a wider range of stakeholders, more confidence that we see a way in which the step change in public transport quality and attractiveness can be achieved, not just to the proposed allocations in question, but better serving the entire plan area. -

In Britain, as in their other provinces, the Romans constructed a comprehensive network of paved trunk roads (i.e. surfaced highways) during their nearly four centuries of occupation (43 - 410 AD). This article focuses on the ca. 2,000 mi (3,200 km) of Roman roads in Britain shown on the Ordnance Survey's Map of Roman Britain.[1] This contains the most accurate and up-to-date layout of certain and probable routes that is readily available to the general public. The pre-Roman Britons used mostly unpaved trackways for their communications, including very ancient ones running along elevated ridges of hills, such as the South Downs Way, now a public long-distance footpath. -

In 2019, it issued a 10-point challenge to the rail industry and government to rebuild public trust in service delivery. See the Rf Board’s end of year report on how well they rose to it. Operation and resilience were satisfactory, but cancellations and industrial relations were an abject failure, while restructuring the industry is still work in progress. Then, hopefully with 20/20 vision, it sets out its 2030 manifesto based on the views of 20,000 members, affiliates and supporters. Introduction 1.1 The Bromsgrove District Plan must identify a settlement hierarchy for the District which should be supported by robust evidence. This settlement hierarchy study has therefore been produced as background research and and justification for the settlement hierarchy as identified in the Bromsgrove District Plan. 1.2 This paper sets out the background to the settlements within the District including an audit of the services and facilities currently available in each settlement and provides a recommendation as to the appropriate settlement hierarchy for use in the Bromsgrove District Plan. The evidence presented here demonstrates that the Settlement Hierarchy forms the basis of delivering future sustainable growth in the district. 2. What is a settlement hierarchy? 2.1 Settlements have traditionally provided a range of services and facilities to support their population. Generally speaking the larger the settlement in population numbers the greater the amount of services/facilities it provides. As car ownership has increased, for a number of reasons, rural services have tended to decline. -
