Situated in between Wilmington and Southport, Orton Plantation features a 1735 mansion, family-owned chapel, numerous formal and informal gardens, and acres of secluded walking trails and colonial rice fields. The plantation house, which is one of the oldest structures in Brunswick county, is considered to be a near-perfect example of Southern antebellum architecture. Built and run on slave labor, Orton was the first rice plantation in the Lower Cape Fear Region. It was also one of the largest and most lucrative rice plantations in North Carolina. The property has been home to lawyers, physicians, military leaders and a Colonial governor. Its rich history also includes an attack by Native Americans, which resulted in the loss of the original 1725 plantation house and construction of the mansion you see today, and serving as a military hospital during the Civil War. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. For decades, Orton Plantation was a popular tourist destination in Southeastern North Carolina. It closed to the public in 2010 when Raleigh native and billionaire hedge-fund manager Louis Bacon purchased the property. Bacon is a direct descendent of Roger Moore, who is credited with building the mansion and developing the property into a leading rice plantation.
