Community Notice Board Good afternoon We promised to keep you informed of developments with this proposal, and the current situation as we understand it, follows. Jerrara Power has now lodged their scoping report which is the documentation that the Department of Planning Industry and Environment will issue the SEARs (Secretary’s Environmental Assessment Requirements) form. Although Council have been advised of the request by the Department, but are yet to receive the formal advice as to the timeframe required to lodge our submission to the SEARs - however this is expected within the coming days. Council and the various Government agencies will be invited to have input to this process. As a Council we will be opposing the issuing of the SEARs for this project. We are doing this on a number of grounds as we are strongly of the opinion that this is the wrong site for such a development. The issues we know that must be addressed include:- · This is a pristine rural environment with a national park very close · This area has significant residential development where people have purchased on a factual belief that this type of development is expressly prohibited in Councils planning documents · Water issues · Human, animal and biodiversity health · The subject land floods · Transport – over 110 trucks every day · The technology is not proven · And much more – refer to the minutes of a recent site meeting attached If you wish to add any other aspects to those already identified, please provide details by return email as soon as possible, as we know we will only get a short timeframe to make our submission on behalf of all. I can assure you our submission to the SEARs will be as comprehensive as we can possibly make it, and hopefully we can stop the SEARs being issued. During a staff meeting with the Department it was suggested that Council make you all aware of the ability to register for updates on the project on the NSW Government Planning Portal. This can be achieved by clicking on the following link and clicking on the ‘notify me’ icon above the Project Details panel https://www.planningportal.nsw.gov.au/major-projects/project/42191. I am arranging to visit the Secretary of the Department of Planning, along with our Local Member for Goulburn Mrs Wendy Tuckerman MP, and our General Manager to convey this Councils and the community’s concerns. This follows on from the meeting we had previously with the Minister of Planning and Public Spaces The Hon Rob Stokes MP. It is not good enough that Sydney’s waste is sent to this region particularly when only one (1) Council in the Greater Sydney area does recycling properly. And if the technology is so good then this Waste to Energy proposal should be developed in Sydney at the source of the waste and take all those trucks off the road. I undertake to continue to keep you informed as we learn more. Please share this email with your neighbours and other interested parties. Regards

Windellama Garden Club Incorporated News May Rainfall For May we ended up receiving 90mm of rain. June Rainfall Up to the 17th we have received 56.5mm with one good drop of 23.5 on the night of 16 & 17th. Currently, on the 18th the clouds are black with some rain drizzling. Weeds Fleabane is a difficult weed to eliminate once established. The recommended time to attack it is when it is in the floret stage. If you are lucky and have long grass it may be difficult to locate. It requires continuous spraying with a recommended weed poison or a combination of different weed poisons. In my younger days, a long time ago, people use to burn their paddocks out before ploughing. This practice got rid of any trash and also helped to eliminate some weeds, especially after ploughing and seeding with a crop or new pasture. However, I remove plants as soon as I see them and throw a handful of mixed grass seed on the spot where it was to help create competition. Fruit Trees When all the leaves have fallen from your fruit trees, it is now time to spray with a recommended fungal spray. If the ones you have used previously have not worked, try a different spray. These sprays are supposed to help rid the fruit trees from fungal infections like leaf curl and some mites. So its important to spray the trees from top to bottom and the surrounding area. This year I will be spraying with a mixture of 2 tablespoons of ultra fine Canola oil plus 1 tablespoon of Baking soda to 4 litres of water and a couple of weeks latter with Lime Sulphur. Also, at or near bud burst with leaf Curl spray. The citrus trees are looking good with plenty of flowers and fruit. Some of the citrus trees top and side have been singed with the frosts received. Don't be tempted to remove these damaged leaves as they do form a type of protection from future frosts. Wait to after frosts have finished usually Melbourne cup day before removing damaged leaves. Vegetable Garden Plants are at a standstill, not growing. Probably, like us - looking for a warmer place. Flower Gardens The perennials that needed cutting back have been done with cuttings taken and planted. The bulbs planted earlier are starting to poke their leaves up. Lots of self planted seedlings are also growing. Bird Life The chooks combs are colouring up from pink to bright red. A good sign that egg laying will happen soon. Keep up with a good laying pellet – provided that they will eat them. Lately we have had visits from the two adult size eagles. I just hope they are feeding on rabbits! The Crimson Parrots are arriving each day in large flocks, 50 or more to feast on the lawn. Next Meeting Not sure with everything going on. Harry Simm Secretary Windellama Garden Club Inc.

Windellama SES First Aid & CFR The SES bread and butter, so to say, is Flood, Storm and Tsunami , now while this is quite true, we do have many more activities in which we are asked to participate in. I joined the SES in 2004, so have had a fair amount of time to be involved in many activities, the first of which was a fire in the Pit at Woodlawn, first aid was one of the tasks we were to participate in, plus other duties as necessary. Next came the bridge repair on a private road out at Mount Baw Baw Road. There was a gun siege at a house at Goulburn, where it was our duty to take over a control point which was brought about by the Police being called to another emergency, this was quite interesting to say the least. Another adventure was to find spent cartridges fired from a rifle. Then we had to find a hidden, larger calibre rifle, which I did, after much searching. I have been twice to the Wombeyan Caves area to participate in Land Searches for missing persons. Then to two separate instances for possible flood victims on the Spa Road at Windellama, of course , these are our normal duties in Floods and Storm events, created by absolutely stupid activities by thoughtless people, alas, putting our lives at risk. These types of activities can have “grave” results for both victim and searcher. You can understand why I have included this. I have participated in various activities for the RFS. I did not get to participate as an observer in the Aircraft search for the missing airliner in the Indian Ocean. There are other jobs with Aircraft in times of both Fires and Floods, refuelling and loading with goods, etc; Some of our SES Team are in the Community First Responders for The NSW Ambulance Service. We are the people who are generally first on scene at an“ event”. People dial triple 000 and the Ambulance then calls us, that is basically it. Our first intake was in 2008 and training was at the Police Academy, Goulburn. There are only two of us remaining from that intake, Irene and myself, rest having moved on to other pursuits or areas. We are confronted with many types of happenings. I have seen too many dead people, many very seriously injured, some as young as 7 years of age as the result of sporting activities?? Also been involved in many Helicopter Evacuations and yes, have been blown over by the downdraft from one of the big Toll Helicopters, much mirth being shown by the Police, Ambulance and of course SES members. There has to be a funny side to some incidents, humour does help. There is always appreciation shown by the patients and relatives when we attend, this I can assure you is very gratifying. May I suggest that some of these people would be rewarded if they came and joined our SES/CFR. The State Emergency Service has a very good Peer Support Team which will attend to any traumatic experiences we may need to be counselled on.

(Continued from page 9) Fortunately, so far, we have had a quiet time for both activities this month. There is soon to be an intake for the CFR and we have three or four people to undertake this big step in their life. The reason behind this is to give you some idea of the various activities that may interest you and can be obtained through the SES/CFR, so come along and give it a go. Some members have gained employment through the Service. We meet every Second and third Monday of the month at the Windellama SES Building, Time 1830 hrs (6.30) pm for SES training and on the 4th Saturday, same location at 0830 hrs ( 8.30) am for Ambulance training. Kevin Muffet Deputy Unit Controller Windellama SES/CFR

The Windellama Landcare Group has had a long overdue AGM and a new committee was elected. The new Committee discussed an active plan for 2021/22 – Covid-19 permitting- covering a range of issues including soil erosion and tree planting. The Windellama Landcare Group is seeking new members, especially younger ones. The Group has been working in the area since the ‘90s and has, in the past, had a large membership. Now, as is the way, many of them have increased in age, and decreased in active ability and some have retired from the group. The Group has worked hard at correcting erosion gullies, planting trees (to solve problems of salty areas and as another solution for fixing erosion) – but most of all it has been a social group of people who cared for the land and needed to repair the damage of previous practices. We draw on the expertise of a range of people, with expertise ranging from soil types, identification of weeds, grasses and trees, to building appropriate erosion controls or amelioration. In recent years we have carried out work on members’ properties and on public land (for example at the Chain of ponds reserve on Sandy Point Road and at Oallen Ford). As our membership has declined, we realise we need to REJUVENATE through new and younger members. This is and has always been a social group – we’ve always loved having the whole family along and even (well-behaved) family dogs – and we enjoy our morning teas and lunches and the company. Why not - JOIN LANDCARE – WE NEED YOU! For more information please contact: John Pearce (0435 586 281) or Sandra Greville (0418 412 460)

Willow Glen Gardeners http://www.whispersfromwillowglen.blogspot.com

Our first winter meeting for the year produced some great winter weather, with the sun out and a light, but bracing, breeze fanning our many members. We gathered at Margaret and Chris’ home, set in a lovely bush environment. They certainly have been busy over the years, as their garden is beautifully terraced, complimented by screen houses and raised beds around the house. There is also the beginnings of a no-dig garden bed, which is topped with plant branches and cuttings. These will break down in time to produce an organic rich garden bed. Chris and Margaret are going to add a bit of fertilizer to help speed up the decomposition. As winter is now upon us, all of our members’ gardens are having a nice rest after the efforts of spring, summer and autumn, where the mild weather and regular rainfall helped to produce Members enjoying a cuppa and chat. Photo by Robyn Briggs one of the best years of growth and production that we have experienced for some time. We all know it won’t last, but we are enjoying the good times while we can. Even though the growing season has come to an end for the next month or so, some members are harvesting potatoes and some carrots. Peter and Marie have got a few figs from their tree, and other member still have fruit on their trees but it is just not ripening. Of course, it is still a good time to be planting bulbs and those winter vegetables, such as The no-dig garden . Photo by Robyn Briggs

brassicas. Those who started early in their winter plantings have seen some early growth. Judy and Warren’s brussel sprouts and bulbs are shooting, and their broad beans and red cabbage are well on their way. Vivien has decided that it is a good time to control her sifton bush (an Australian native also known as biddy bush), before it flowers and adds even more seed to her property. Certainly it is a good time over winter to hit as many weeds as possible before they take off again in spring and summer. What’s the old saying? “One year’s seed Rugged up in the garden. Photo by Robyn Briggs is seven years weed.”

July in Your Garden By Irene Turner

Roses and fruit trees can be planted now, all your deciduous flowering trees, such as flowering cherry, crab apple, peach, lilac, laburnum vossi(golden chain tree) and pink and red hawthorn. Also larger trees such as liquidambar, box elder, golden elm, claret and golden ash and silver birch, also Japanese maples. Japanese gardens, as a pot specimen or in a courtyard providing it is very cool and shaded in the afternoon, as the hot summer winds and heat can burn the leaves. Roses and fruit pruning can start this month . I try to prune last week in July or the first week in August. VEGETABLES Sow broad beans, peas and all varieties of onions. Tidy up your strawberry plants now, replant any new runner`s, strawberry like a acid potting mix suitable for tomatoes, and cover them with pine needles. Rhubarb and asparagus crowns, can be divided and replanted now. FLOWERS Seedlings for sowing; Stock, viola, primula, wallflower, russel lupins, delphiniums, foxglove, poppies, sweet William and calendula, alyssum, snapdragons, verbena, dianthus, and sow the seeds of Virginian stock, where you would like them to grow. Things to do now. Transplant deciduous trees and shrubs while they are in their bare-leafed dormant stage. Prune hydrangeas and apply lime to soil to raise the PH and encourage pink blooms- or if you have acid soil you will get blue flowers. Tidy up indoor plants, removing dead leaves and flowers, and apply a neem spray to any that are badly infested with fluffy mealy bugs. Plant japonica camellias to add colour to shady spots around the garden. Move frost-affected container plants into a more protected position. Prune crepe myrtles, if desired, and cut back any root suckers that have appeared down to ground level. Apply liquid fertilizer fortnightly to speed up the growth of annual flowers, such as pansy, primula, wallflower, nemesia, cineraria and calendula. Trim dead flower stems from early daffodils and jonquils leaving any green leaves intact.

(Continued from page 17) Lynda is still harvesting her lemon grass and turmeric, and eagerly awaiting her next consignment of bare-rooted trees. Lynda doesn’t plant these out straight away, but pots the trees to encourage a well-established fine root system before planting them in their final position in her orchard. She often leaves them in pots for up to 12 months before planting out. With the reported mice plagues in some parts of the State, we are all on the lookout for signs of increased mouse activity in our region. So far, mouse numbers appear to be pretty normal, however they do love to invade the house, no doubt to escape the cold as well as to look for unguarded food, and find nice snug nesting sites. Placing steel wool in external access spaces is a tried and true remedy, as is installing weep-hole guards in the external brickwork. Hopefully we will be spared a mouse plague for the foreseeable future.

Page 22 www.windellama.com.au Windellama News - June 2021 First off we send out a big thanks to Carpet Court for supplying and fitting new blinds for the entrance. At the end of last month, it was Tarago market day, with a good number of stalls both inside the hall and outside. Considering the temperature of the morning (freezing) it was well attended. Also playing at the markets was a new band to the area called ’The Clicky Hips’ which consists of three locals (Carlos, Warren and Peter) who are members of the Men’s Shed and Melissa and Ade who come from Goulburn. This was only their second time that they have played anywhere and considering that three members have not played in a band before, they were happy with their performance. Lots of activity this month with Ken starting to oil the recycled hard wood posts that he donated for the entrance to the Men’s Shed. Big thanks to Bunnings for supplying the oil as well as various tools and consumables. Michael, Robert and Doug have started the design work for the safe access lanes and clear ways to be painted on the shed floor to make it safer when navigating around the shed. Doug has been hard at work rebuilding an old chair and making a jewellery box and a gavel for Robert. A gavel is a wooden mallet that judges use to bring the court to order. We need a few of them at the Men’s Shed to keep everything in order, far too much singing, whistling, laughing, dancing, pontificating, exaggerating and fishy stories, so I will leave it there and tell you about a dibbler. A dibbler is a turned piece of wood with depth markings along its length so you can make holes in soil at the right depth for sowing seeds or planting seedlings etc, and Bob is making one for his wife. Super Soup Day, 19th June was a big success, thanks to Noel for organising it Ray feared his wife Judy wasn't hearing as well as she used to & he thought she may need a hearing aid. Not quite sure how to approach her, he called the family Doctor to discuss the problem. The Doctor told him there is a simple informal test he could perform to give the Doctor a better idea about her hearing loss. "Here's what you do", said the Doctor, stand about 10 metres away from her and in normal speaking tone see if she hears you. If not, go to 8 metres, then 6 and so on till you get a response. That evening, his wife is in the kitchen cooking dinner and he in his den. He says to himself, I'm about 10m away, let’s see what happens. Then in a normal tone he asks "Honey, what's for dinner?" No response So he moves 2 metres closer "Judy, what's for dinner?" Still no response So he moves another 2 metres closer "Darling, what's for dinner?" Still nothing Photo of gavel So this time he moves right up next to her "Lovey dove, what's for dinner?" "for Christs sake Ray, for the FOURTH TIME, BLOODY CHICKEN ! See you at the shed.
