Research Interests Dr M. Satish Kumar is a leading international expert on colonial and postcolonial studies focused on South Asia, covering many areas across social sciences and humanities. He is heavily engaged in key issues of international development and its ramifications across urban and rural contexts. In particular, challenges of heritage management in the context of rapid urbanisation are a current area of research. His knowledge and expertise is widely sought by Governments, charities and other organisations and he has been an active advisor on subjects such as international development and higher education to the Department for International Development, Northern Irish Assembly, Indian Government, Royal Irish Academy, Belfast City Council and Habitat for Humanity amongst others. Dr Kumar is also extensively involved in the academic community as a member of peer-review colleges for AHRC - GCRF and Newton Fund and a reviewer of proposals for a range of other funding bodies such as the British Council. He has also held a number of visiting Professorships including most recently in Jawaharlal Nehru University, and currently in the University of Calcutta, Kolkata. Dr Kumar’s valued contributions to international research and teaching have been recognised through a number of awards: - Bhoovigyan (Earth Scientist) National Leadership Award by the late Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, Vice President of for contributions to Population, Environment & Development Studies. India (2002). - The India- European Union Global Peace and Friendship Award, 2001 for promoting international peace and understanding based on the values of Peace, Education and Culture over the past twenty years in the communities in India and the UK, (2003). - Queen’s University Teaching Award (2014) as nominated by the students out of 1175 academic staff. -Shortlisted for Queen's University Belfast Vice Chancellor's Research Impact Award, 2018. Dr Kumar brings a critical, Southern Asian perspective on diversity, gender and age into the engagement remit. Inclusivity and a diversity of experience across disciplinary boundaries help reinforce impact and adds tremendous value for RCUK- led research initiatives across the global South. Evidence for his approach can be seen in his much admired work in the local Northern Ireland context where he has been very active in establishing and participating in a number of initiatives to promote engagement and cross-cultural understanding. For example: - Established the Young Civic Leaders of Northern Ireland (2014) programme to encourage young people in Northern Ireland to engage in their local communities and make civic contributions. - Chair of the Board of Directors for ArtsEkta, Northern Ireland’s leading Intercultural Ethnic Arts and Cultural Organisation (2013-15), promoting intercultural dialogue. While chair, Dr Kumar oversaw the Governance Training of Board Members under the Charities Commission compliance directive and successful progress towards completion of the key targets for the organisation. - Organised several interactive workshops on themes of global citizenship and peace for school children in Northern Ireland as part of work supporting development educational initiatives in the region, especially among marginal communities.
