SOCIAL JUSTICE MOVIE Wag the Dog is a 1997 black comedy film produced and directed by Barry Levinson. The screenplay by Hilary Henkin and David Mamet was loosely adapted from Larry Beinhart's novel American Hero. The film stars Dustin Hoffman and Robert De Niro, with Anne Heche, Denis Leary, and William H. Macy in supporting roles. The film follows a Washington, D.C. spin doctor (De Niro) who, mere days before a presidential election, distracts the electorate from a sex scandal by hiring a Hollywood film producer (Hoffman) to construct a fake war with Albania and, once underway, the media is entirely focused on the war. The Social Justice Team will sponsor the showing of this movie on Friday, October 21 at 7:00 PM in the Parlor. All are invited. READING GROUP On Thursday, October 27, the Reading Group will gather at 7:00 PM in the Parlor to discuss Molly Guptill Manning’s book When Books Went to War. It is a thoroughly engaging, enlightening, and often uplifting account of America's counterattack against Nazi Germany's wholesale burning of books. During World War II, the US government, along with librarians and publishers, dispatched millions of books to American GIs, sailors, and fliers, using the written word itself as a powerful reply to tyranny, thought control, absolutism, and perverse ideology. (Tim O’Brien, National Book Award winner). Discounted copies of the book are available at Carmichael’s – just mention the CHBC Reading Group. .

  • Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's Adapted Screenplays
Absorbing the Worlds of Others: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s Adapted Screenplays By Laura Fryer Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of a PhD degree at De Montfort University, Leicester. Funded by Midlands 3 Cities and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. June 2020 i Abstract Despite being a prolific and well-decorated adapter and screenwriter, the screenplays of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala are largely overlooked in adaptation studies. This is likely, in part, because her life and career are characterised by the paradox of being an outsider on the inside: whether that be as a European writing in and about India, as a novelist in film or as a woman in industry. The aims of this thesis are threefold: to explore the reasons behind her neglect in criticism, to uncover her contributions to the film adaptations she worked on and to draw together the fields of screenwriting and adaptation studies. Surveying both existing academic studies in film history, screenwriting and adaptation in Chapter 1 -- as well as publicity materials in Chapter 2 -- reveals that screenwriting in general is on the periphery of considerations of film authorship. In Chapter 2, I employ Sandra Gilbert’s and Susan Gubar’s notions of ‘the madwoman in the attic’ and ‘the angel in the house’ to portrayals of screenwriters, arguing that Jhabvala purposely cultivates an impression of herself as the latter -- a submissive screenwriter, of no threat to patriarchal or directorial power -- to protect herself from any negative attention as the former. However, the archival materials examined in Chapter 3 which include screenplay drafts, reveal her to have made significant contributions to problem-solving, characterisation and tone.

Abstract The diversionary theory of war is one of the most speculated about and debated theories in foreign policy literature. The theory argues that government leaders who are confronted with public antagonism over domestic economic, social, and political problems sometimes start wars to divert their populaces‘ attention from domestic problems and therefore to survive politically. Numerous foreign policy conflicts have been interpreted as being diversionary in nature and it has been commonplace for analysts to examine the domestic politics and problems of countries that engage in international conflict. Specifically, the use of force by US Presidents against external actors, such as U.S. President George H.W. Bush‘s operation against Grenada and the First Gulf War, and U.S.

Instead, I will switch my focus from the filmic text to the afilmic reality in order to examine the historical and political context in which Wag the Dog was produced. Then I will engage with what Souriau would call the ‘spectatorial events’, discussing the ways in which the screening of the film affected the way people would interpret the American political reality for years to come. I will argue that Levinson’s film inadvertently became an emblematic case study for the evolving relation between fiction and reality in contemporary media- saturated society, urging us to reconsider some of our longstanding assumptions about art imitating or revealing reality. There was nothing in the pre-production or filming stage of Wag the Dog that could foretell its fated trajectory. It was originally a small project that was squeezed into Levinson’s agenda while filming the big budget Sphere.

The Premieres program showcases some of the most highly anticipated films of the coming year. Catch world premieres and the latest work from established directors at the Sundance Film Festival before they create a splash at local theatres. Cedar Rapids DIRECTOR: Miguel Arteta SCREENWRITER: Phil Johnston U.S.A., 2010, 86 min., color Miguel Arteta returns to the Sundance Film Festival with a comedy about a group of Premieres insurance salesmen who use the opportunity PRESENTED BY ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY to attend an annual convention in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, as a way to escape their doleful existence . like Vegas but with corn. Tim Lippe has been living in a small town his whole life and gets a rude awakening when he arrives in the “giant” metropolis of Cedar Rapids. However, his boyish charm and innocence eventually win over his fellow conventioneers, but he becomes disheartened when he uncovers corporate corruption. When it seems his life—and chances to succeed—are completely topsy-turvy, he finds his own unjaded way to turn things around. Cedar Rapids deftly straddles that line between laughing at and with its subjects thanks to Arteta’s skilled direction and Ed Helms’s hilarious, yet thoughtful, performance. John C. Reilly, Anne Heche, and Isiah Whitlock Jr. play off Helms perfectly to fashion characters that are eccentric, yet honest. Filled with quotable dialogue and unforgettable scenes, Cedar Rapids achieves the impossible: it makes insurance fun.—T.G. Pr: Jim Burke, Alexander Payne, Jim Taylor Principal Cast: Ed Helms, John C.
