SOCIAL JUSTICE MOVIE is a 1997 black comedy film produced and directed by . The screenplay by and was loosely adapted from 's novel American Hero. The film stars and , with , Denis Leary, and William H. Macy in supporting roles. The film follows a Washington, D.C. spin doctor (De Niro) who, mere days before a presidential election, distracts the electorate from a sex scandal by hiring a Hollywood film producer (Hoffman) to construct a fake war with Albania and, once underway, the media is entirely focused on the war. The Social Justice Team will sponsor the showing of this movie on Friday, October 21 at 7:00 PM in the Parlor. All are invited.

READING GROUP On Thursday, October 27, the Reading Group will gather at 7:00 PM in the Parlor to discuss Molly Guptill Manning’s book When Books Went to War. It is a thoroughly engaging, enlightening, and often uplifting account of America's counterattack against Nazi Germany's wholesale burning of books. During World War II, the US government, along with librarians and publishers, dispatched millions of books to American GIs, sailors, and fliers, using the written word itself as a powerful reply to tyranny, thought control, absolutism, and perverse ideology. (Tim O’Brien, National Book Award winner). Discounted copies of the book are available at Carmichael’s – just mention the CHBC Reading Group.
